Bird Fact: The Cassowary is the heaviest bird in Australia.

They may appear like the combination of turkey and ostrich while some tell they look like a 'giant prehistoric turkey, but Cassowaries are in fact descendants of dinosaurs. 😮 😮 😮

That explains why their large, black-feathered body, bluish skin on their head, reddish skin on their neck and blue-grey coloured legs are similar to a dinosaur.

The adult males are 31cm and the females are 28cm. They have overall glossy blue-black feathers with unique elongated 'head tufts' and loose neck feathers.

🐦 Behaviour: Males have loud and powerful calls during courtship.
🐦 Feeding: Fruits and invertebrates
🐦 Breeding: Monogamous, both male and female attend nest during incubation period, brooding and feeding

Papuan Frogmouth

A nocturnal bird that belongs to the Nightjars family and the largest Frogmouth when it comes to length. They can be identified from other Frogmouths through their large red eyes and bulbous bill.

🦉 Behaviour: Their call, a resonant 'ooom' or a laughing hoot is commonly heard before dawn and after dusk.
🦉 Feeding: Their diet is mainly insects, but they are also preying on mice, frogs or small reptiles.
🦉 Breeding: This type of bird breed from August to January. They will lay one or two eggs in a nest made of few sticks.

The trumpet manucode is named after its powerful and loud trumpeting calls.

The trumpet manucode is approximately 31 cm long. It has elongated horn-like head tufts and loose neck feathers. The plumage is of an iridescent blackish glossed blue, green and purple. It has a red iris, long coiled trachea, and blackish bill, mouth and legs. The female resembles the male, but is smaller in size and duller in color.

Some of the subspecies vary slightly among themselves, most notably in size and iridescence color.

Can only be found in Cape York Peninsula in the state of Queensland, Australia.

The Eclectus Parrot is one of the largest of the nine subspecies - the length is about 42 cm and has a 18cm tail.
