Whaling has been associated with Albany, from the early days of European settlement. 🐋But did you know that, at the same time as the Frontier Wars were raging across Australia, aboriginal men from the Albany area were employed at full wages on whaling ships working the waters of the Southern Ocean? The work was so dangerous, that Captain Stubbs lost his leg on the gun deck - and his pet cockatoo constantly tried to break out by gnawing away at the cabin door before being lost at sea.

"Water Encore" continues the narrative established in "Starring Water," depicting the shared struggles of communities in the Goldfields during a period of explosive population growth following the gold rush.
The absence of fresh water prior to CY O'Connor's pipeline brought numerous challenges, including Australia's largest typhoid epidemic, the rise of new industries such as condenser construction, extensive deforestation to sustain these industries, and the innovation of dry blowing for gold extraction due to the arid landscape. The sequel showcases the resilience and resourcefulness of these communities amidst adversity.

What if we told you there was once a time when frogs were water bottles and water was more precious than gold? 🤔
Before CY O'Connor's famous pipeline supplied water to the arid Western Australian Goldfields, water was more valuable than gold. Indigenous tribes shared their knowledge of water sources like gnammaholes and water-holding frogs with early explorers. However, the gold rush led to an influx of thirsty prospectors and miners, who, along with camel and horse trains, depleted and polluted these water sources, resulting in a decade of disease and hardship. Charlie & The Beer Factories
Would you believe us if we told you it was once cheaper (and much safer) to drink beer than water in the Goldfields? 🍻
In the arid Goldfields, when pubs flourished, they once thrived as the social life in their communities. From hosting theatrical performances to witnessing the town’s first wedding, these establishments were vital to community life. But when publicans attempted to exploit their monopoly with beer price hikes, the locals united in the Great Beer Strike of 1903, proving that even in the Goldfields, principles are worth fighting for.
