Iconic north coast landmarks receive dual names ππ
In wonderful and historic news, the Geographical Names Board has officially restored traditional Aboriginal names to two landmarks in Byron Bay. Two sites will now have dual names: Cape Byron is now also known as Walgun, while Julian Rocks is now also Nguthungulli.
Nguthungulli is a sacred Aboriginal site to the Bundjalung of Byron Bay (Arakwal) people and is associated with several dreaming stories. Nguthungulli is said to be βFather of the Worldβ, and is the traditional name used by the Arakwal people.
Walgun means βshoulderβ in Bundjalung language and is significant to the Arakwal and other Bundjalung people, used for important gatherings and ceremonies.
The Aboriginal name holds equal status to the non-Aboriginal name and can be used individually or combined. In this dual naming, we acknowledge and celebrate the traditional custodians of the area and their continuing connection to these culturally, spiritually, and historically significant sites.
We proudly support this dual naming, which is thanks to the extensive work of Traditional Owners, the Bundjalung of Byron Bay Aboriginal Corporation, Cape Byron Trust and our staff.
