It's been a busy week for our school tours in the Yarra Valley - groups from Deakin University visited the YVW Upper Yarra Sewage Treatment Plant last week at Launching Place, and this week RMIT and secondary groups visited the MW Winneke Water Treatment Plant at Christmas Hills. It's been great to get students out for important site visits!

It was a lovely morning at Cardinia Reservoir Park for my tour with Geography students from John Paul College, Frankston. As well as learning about their water supply, they completed a comprehensive worksheet developed by their teachers as part of their assessment.

We are releasing water for the environment in the Yarra River (Birrarung) to provide a summer fresh flow 💦

The release will run from 19 to 27 February, the water will help flush pools and riffles to prevent a decline in water quality and maintain habitat quality for fish and waterbugs.

We are delivering the water on behalf of the Victorian Environmental Water Holder and as always, we will be monitoring the flows during the release.

We had an amazing start to last week's Night Walk...two Greater Gliders emerged from a hollow in a dead tree and glided 50m to a nearby tree to feed.

We had a great tour of the Yering Gorge Pump Station and Winneke Water Treatment Plant on Friday with Chris and the team from Acrodyne Pty Ltd. They were like Satin Bowerbirds - attracted to anything blue (which signified mechanisms supplied by their company). I look forward to showing them around the YVW UYSTP next year.

We had a great Night Walk on Monday - a career high maximum of 31 Greater Gliders seen during our Badger Weir Picnic Area circuit, including two pale coloured gliders. Also seen and/or heard were microbats hunting insects, Sambar Deer, Boobook Owls and a Mountain Brushtail Possum.

I had a lovely incursion to Hampton Park Secondary College last week to give a presentation about operating a sustainable ecotourism business. We included a walk around the school grounds to talk about using citizen science apps such as iNaturalist to monitor what's happening locally, and visited their Tree Day site and veggie patch.

Despite the recent wet weather, we did get a fine day for our recent student tours at Maroondah Reservoir Park. The spillway was overflowing and the "Maroondah Falls" were thundering. Thanks Steve for the photos! We look forward to our next tour in July with a school from Hong Kong.

Throwback time! Here's a favourite from June '22.

Have you ever wondered what a greater glider looks like when it glides? 🤯

Unlike other gliders, the membrane in the greater glider only goes to the elbow. To glide they tuck their hands under their chin and push out their elbows! 🦅
