Bec Wellard has been working with marine mammals for the past 10 years and is an avid conservation scientist, naturalist, ocean adventurer, and self-professed cetacean nerd. She recently joined Intrepid as a whale scientist on polar trips. ⁣

“Women in science have made huge gains in the last few decades, yet we still have a long way to go. International Women’s Day gives us a perfect moment to stop and reflect on the women who inspire, the women who lead, and the women who shatter those glass ceilings for all of us.⁣
⁣
“This day is a reminder of how important it is to support and encourage young women. It’s easy to feel like the fight for gender equality was over long ago, but unfortunately, that’s not true. Women still face major obstacles in joining the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. With a lack of role models to inspire young women it’s harder for them to find the confidence to pursue a career in STEM. It’s important that we provide advice and encouragement to young women to help them see themselves pursuing the career that they want. Empowering and educating women and young girls will empower humanity. As a woman working in marine science, I encourage my fellow female peers to empower women in pursuit of their dream - whatever it may be.⁣

“I would like to thank all the strong and ferocious women who have broken through barriers and enabled me to pursue my dream. As a marine scientist, I have spent the majority of my career working at sea surrounded by men. It’s not a horrible work environment, but it does lack diversity. Fast forward to today and I am now lucky to be surrounded by women in my career in STEM and there are more and more incredible women standing by my side working at sea.”⁣

Hour had a very, very close encounter with a curious minke whale on an Antarctic expedition.

"It stuck it’s head up several times to have a good look at us and spent a good half hour swimming underneath us all checking us out. We all had massive grins on our faces for the rest of the day."
