My advice of checking everything, all the time has saved our bacon on several occasions as we traverse some of the roughest tracks in the country.

Like I say, you don't have to be an expert on what everything under your bonnet does, but if one day something doesn't look right, you may have saved yourself from a costly repair job, or worse, being stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Who doesn't love the iconic echidna? It is Australia's most widely distributed land animal, living in incredibly varied habitats, from the alpine zone to the vast deserts. This amazing creature lays eggs, suckles its young (called a puggle) in a pouch, lives solely on ants and termites, and can dig a hole straight down in seconds if threatened, leaving its armory of spines to meet any would-be attacker!

The echidna's scientific name, ๐‘‡๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž๐‘ฆ๐‘”๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘ , means "quick tongue" (in reference to the speed with which the echidna uses its tongue to catch ants and termites) and "equipped with spines". A fairly accurate description.

Australia's echidna is actually one of 4 species, and is more correctly called the short-beaked echidna. It also occurs in PNG, along with its relatives.

I came across some interesting tracks around a rocky escarpment in the Great Sandy Desert in the Winter of 2023 on our Canning Stock Route Tour. It wasn't until I found the pile of s**t that I realised it was echidna sign. The s**t consisted of sand and the shiny bodies of thousands of ants - a dead give-away!

You can help researchers at "Echidna CSI" (conservation science initiative) gather a better picture of where echidnas live by recording your sightings on the iNaturalist app, or the BioCollect app.

Here is another piece of gear that I use every day. The ๐†๐š๐ซ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง ๐ข๐ง๐‘๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐ข is, for all intents and purposes, a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB - similar to an EPIRB but on land) that can be used to raise the alarm in an emergency. Not only that, it's also a 2-way GPS communicator, meaning you can send and receive text messages in an emergency situation, or just to text your wife and tell her you're still alive when you're out in the boonies.

Another great function is the tracker. When activated, it pings the satellite every 10 minutes and marks your position on the map which can be accessed on a website. This web address can be shared with anyone you would like to keep an eye on your position. It's also very small and lightweight, meaning there's no excuse to leave it in the car if you're going for a walk.

And we know they work. While in the Simpson Desert earlier this year, I got a call via Starlink from the Birdsville Police asking me if I could pick up a solo motorcyclist who had stacked his bike which was now unrideable. Being unable to contact anyone back home, and being in a very wet and muddy Simpson Dessert, the guy with the bike had set off his inReach. Later on the following day, we managed to get to him and pile his gear (minus the bike) on my vehicle and give him a ride the 2 days back to Birdsville.

The interesting thing was that I got to hear exactly how the process went for him with the inReach. Because it's based in the USA, they have to call Canberra, who then called the nearest State (NT, Darwin), who then called the nearest Police (Birdsville). But this all happens fairly quickly, and there is constant 2-way messaging to let you know what's going on. Yes, it was probably a shock for his family back home to hear that he had initiated a rescue, but at least they knew he was alive and in the process of being extracted.

Along with being sensible and letting someone know where you're going, a PLB/tracker is a very handy piece of safety equipment.

June 2022 - The first, and only, single crossing tour of the Simpson Desert that I ran. Not that it was a bad trip, far from it, but I like the double crossing better! Here's the convoy on the Western side of the desert. We managed to bail out to Mt Dare just before a significant rain band came through. The trip out to the main highway a couple of days later was ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ slippery (the road was open, however), and the drive wasn't without incident, with a Landcruiser losing a rear wheel - spacers are not your friend! Our feature tour in 2026 takes us on an epic journey from Central Australia, all the way to the sea in Western Australia. Not only that, but we also come all the way back to Alice through some incredible National Parks, remote desert tracks, and iconic locations.

This tour is for those of you who want to undertake a unique remote adventure. You must be well set up for remote travel, and have a desire to see the wild side of life. The corrugations will be very rough in places. The majority of the trip takes place in very remote country. We'll get to see some incredible places that very few people ever get to.

Some off-road driving experience is preferred for this tour.

Meet Dan and Arleen Acton from Leander, Texas, USA. These two adventurers joined us in May this year for our first Simpson Desert Tour of the season. This was the final leg of their epic trip to the East of Australia. What started as an idea to see the desert for a few days, ended up with Dan booking for our 15 night double crossing tour while Arleen was at the shops!

While they are not campers back home (although fairly adventurous in their own right), they took to the desert with gusto, soaking up the desert lifestyle and fitting right in with our group from day 1. They were a joy to have along, always quick with a smile or witty comment. Being able to learn about their part of the World and also their take on what we think is normal here in Australia, is a wonderful part of travelling and meeting new people.

Their adventure with us was made possible with the rental 4WD from Overlander 4WD Hire. The team at Overlander go out of their way to make sure the vehicles meet all of the requirements for our tours, making it really easy for people to experience this kind of adventure. (Just give the vehicle a clean before you give it back! ๐Ÿ˜†)

Thanks Dan and Arleen for coming along on our tour and helping to make it so memorable for everyone involved.

Did you know that feral cats are one of the biggest threats to Australia's unique wildlife? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿพ These cunning predators are responsible for the extinction of numerous species and the decline of many more since their introduction in the late 1780s. There is not one square kilometre of Australia that hasn't felt the impacts of feral cats. They can travel vast distances and don't need water to survive.

Thereโ€™s an interesting relationship between wildfires in desert and semi-arid areas and feral cats. Cats have learned that after a large fire, they can easily prey on small animals and reptiles seeking refuge. However, when the land is managed with low-intensity burns that create a mosaic of burnt and unburnt patches, animals can find refuge more easily and arenโ€™t as vulnerable to predators. Feral cats are smart. Radio tracking studies in the Kimberley have shown they don't travel to smaller fires, knowing it won't be worth the effort.

๐Ÿ“ทWhile the feral cat in my photo has killed a non-native species, it shows how they can take down something of a similar size to themselves.

Three pieces of gear that I use every day while on tour are my navigator (on an iPad), the iPad surround, and the mount the iPad is attached to. "ExplorOz Traveller" https://www.exploroz.com/traveller has been an excellent mapping and navigation tool since I installed it 2 years ago. Having this on my iPad, which is positioned within easy view of my driving position, has made off-road navigation a breeze.

The iPad sits inside an OtterBox case, which is in turn, attached to the "Industrial Evolution" in-dash mount https://www.industrialevolution.com.au/ . The mount is incredibly well built and has survived innumerable corrugations over the past 2 years. It's attached inside the dash where the radio mounts screw in, so there's no need to drill holes in your dashboard.

Tell us what you use for electronic mapping. It's good to see what works for different people.

Australian scorpions are found in a range of habitats, from deserts to forests. Being nocturnal, we often see them in the desert at night with a "black light". Australian scorpions glow under UV light due to a natural fluorescent protein in their exoskeleton, which absorbs UV radiation and re-emits it as visible light. This glow could serve several purposes, including UV protection, attracting prey, communication, and possibly deterring predators. While the exact reasons are still debated, it remains one of the most fascinating aspects of scorpion biology.

Australian scorpion venom is not typically lethal to humans, but I've been told it hurts (a lot). The venom is used primarily for hunting prey, such as insects, small arachnids, and other invertebrates. They use their pincers and stingers to capture and immobilize prey.

I have also seen a scorpion using its pincers and tail to dig a burrow. We unearthed one during morning tea one day, and watched as it frantically tried to get back under ground. It dug the sand away to the sides with its pincers, and used its tail to sweep the sand away back from the hole. Efficient and unexpected.

Does anyone know what a scorpion burrow looks like? Hint: slot machine ๐Ÿ˜

Did You Know? Feral Facts About Australiaโ€™s Camels ๐Ÿค”

โ€ข Australia has the largest wild population of Arabian camels, found across desert and semi-desert regions.
โ€ข Camels were introduced to Australia in the 1840s for inland exploration, with somewhere between 10,000 & 20,000 imported from India.
โ€ข Camels are highly mobile, travelling for more than 100km in a day if necessary. This, combined with their ability to go for several months (under the right conditions) without water, means that no part of the desert is immune to their browsing and trampling impacts.
โ€ข Camels pose a threat to Indigenous sites by fouling waterholes and damaging cultural landmarks.
โ€ข Camels impact farming in Australia by damaging fences, fouling or destroying water sources, and competing with livestock for grazing resources, especially during droughts.

This camel was happy to cruise along beside me for a while on the Gunbarrel Highway back in June 2023.

Adventure Travel - Why we do what we do

"I love to share the adventure of travel in remote locations, places most people are never likely to go on their own. Seeing the smiles on faces and enjoying the camaraderie of a group of people I'm helping to accomplish life-long goals is what it's all about.

We use a network of travel experts around the World to provide a seamless experience for our customers. Our professional tour guides provide instruction and support throughout each tour to help our customers successfully and safely tackle challenging terrain in isolated situations.

Up to 8 customer vehicles come on our tag-along tours which are a mix of self, part and fully catered. They are led by experienced guides from Australia, New Zealand and Scotland and we always have a local assistant with us as on our International tours as a mechanic/interpreter to help smooth the way.

Hearing our customers recounting their day's achievements around the campfire at night gives me a huge sense of satisfaction and lets me know that I'm doing the best job possible.
