Bin Chicken Invasion: How the Ibis Took Over Sydney

Meet the Australian white ibis, our feathered friends who’ve become the poster birds for adaptation and resilience in urban Australia. Love them or loathe them, these scavengers—affectionately nicknamed “bin chicken”, “tip turkey”, and my personal favorite, “the Campsie flamingo” - are here to stay.

Once residents of serene wetlands, these adaptable birds migrated to Sydney from the 1980s onwards. Prolonged droughts and habitat destruction have pushed them from their natural homes to our bustling streets. A visit to Strathfield, anyone? The streets in the suburb of Strathfield have a distinct bin chicken aroma.

While some see them as pesky invaders, others recognize their role in our urban ecosystem. With urban areas offering abundant food (thanks, garbage bins) and cozy nesting spots, ibises have thrived, turning into cultural icons featured in media, art, and educational programs about urban wildlife.

Sure, their scavenging antics can spark some human-bird conflicts, but they’ve also become a beloved part of our city’s wildlife scene. Their story is a testament to the adaptability of wildlife facing human-induced changes.

So next time you spot a Campsie flamingo foraging in the park, remember—it’s not just a bird, it’s a symbol of urban resilience!

Just met these young legends who caught a salmon by hand! They dove straight into the sea, right into a school of salmon, and came out with this beauty 🐟🎉 I’m not usually a big fan of fishing, but I can’t think of a more ethical way to catch fish than this.

Meet Crash, the Long-nosed Bandicoot at Walkabout Wildlife Park! 🐾

Bandicoots are common residents of eastern Australia, playing a vital role in our ecosystems. 🌿 These nocturnal diggers help aerate the soil and control insect populations. 🦗🌱

Unfortunately, bandicoots like Crash face threats from habitat loss, predation by introduced species like foxes and cats, and competition from other animals. To protect these native creatures, baiting (1080) is being used in our local national park to reduce the impact of foxes and wild dogs. 🐾🦊

Bandicoots are solitary and omnivorous, coming out at night to forage for insects, small invertebrates, roots, seeds, and fruits. They make their homes in diverse habitats ranging from rainforests to deserts. 🌲🏞️

The Golden Orb Weaver spider is nature's architect. These incredible arachnids are very visible this time of year, boasting a size that can reach up to 1-2 inches for females. And let's not overlook the males – you can spot one at the top of this picture, significantly smaller but equally fascinating! During mating, males must approach females cautiously to avoid a sticky situation – being mistaken for prey and potentially becoming a meal themselves.

What's truly amazing is their craftsmanship. Golden Orb Weavers are silk-spinning masters, weaving intricate webs that stretch several feet across. Their silk is stronger than steel, making their webs truly formidable traps for unsuspecting prey!

These spiders are more shy than scary. They prefer to stay hidden in their webs, patiently waiting for their next meal. And despite their fearsome appearance, they're not aggressive towards humans.

Taking a break from my tours to dive into nature! Today, I ventured along the enchanting Strickland Falls Track, starting my journey from the Banksia Picnic Area, a cozy retreat tucked away in the forest.

As you descend towards the falls, the scenery transforms into a lush wonderland. Towering cliffs, moss-covered rocks and ferns painted picture-perfect scenes.

This brief hike and a picnic here could become an optional addition to one of my tours!

Sydney's Secrets - private tour. Featuring wilderness, wildlife, waves, waterfalls and wine

Sydney's Secrets, private tour - for visitors who’ve already ticked off the ‘bucket-list’ sites of the city and are ready for something fresh and authentic, closer to nature and away from the masses…

I’m proud to say that Sydney Guided Tours is unlike any other tour operator in Sydney. I take you to places that aren’t on traditional tourist paths.

My goal is to show you what "Sydneysiders" get up to in their time off, often in the stunning natural environments located just outside of Sydney. As a born and bred Sydney local who is passionate about our natural landscape, flora and fauna, I’ve spent my weekends and holidays discovering the hidden jewels located on the other side of Sydney. I’d like to share them with you.

I respect that your holiday time in Sydney is precious and that you want to have an authentic Sydney experience! So, here’s what you won’t do on my tour: - wait in line with hordes of tourists - sit forever in traffic - drive for hours to distant locations - just to look at sites!
