Today I left Mel at the park to tick off some admin tasks while I ran around to do a few things. Shopping for chemicals so we can start to offer pest management services whilst on the road and organise a new windscreen for the dmax after all the battle scars from remote qld roads.
And they were able to do it today but the cons of having a new vehicle with all the bell's and whistles is a windscreen replacement isn't cheap.
We decided on taking a tour of the rest of the park this afternoon as it hasn't been too hot with the cloud cover but not much rain the last couple of days

Movie day.

We thought we'd head out to Fogg Dam, but decided on a movie day in the van instead. We did venture out for a swim only to return for more movies. I think we are officially movie out.

We started our photo book but realised we have a massive task ahead with all the pics we took. Maybe we need to keep on top of this on a monthly basis.

We continue to monitor the flood warnings in Qld in particular Townsville and continue to hope that our friends remain safe and dry.

Market day

Today was time to sus out some of the local markets, so first stop was Parap markets where there was a great selection of different cuisine to choose from, as well as some typical market stalls that sold clothing and handmade gifts.

We couldn't resist trying some of the food on offer and may have to be regular visitors to try others out next week.

Next stop was Rapid Creek markets, these were mostly fresh fruit and vegs stalls and Indonesian style food choices.

We then headed to Casurina shopping centre and get our fix of a normal shopping centre that you would expect in civilisation as we haven't had this opportunity too often in the past twelve months being on the road and in more remote locations.

After picking up some groceries we headed back to the van before enjoying an afternoon swim.

Art Gallery.

Today we went into the city to explore. 1st stop was the info centre.

We then headed up to the botanical Gardens and the art gallery to check out the cyclone Tracy exhibit as they recently celebrated the 50 year anniversary last Christmas. Again the display demonstrated how devastating the natural disaster was for the locals. We also enjoyed the other exhibits, it's well worth a visit plus it's in air con. 😀. Although we only got to 33 degrees the humidity was higher today.

Airport.

Today we drove out to Darwin airport with peak hour traffic. The vast difference to Brisbane was astonishing, in 15 mins we were there.

After I ditched dave off at the drop off area, I went exploring looking for the nearest shopping centre. I found one only 7 mins away and indulged myself by looking in all the shops for a new outfit for my friends upcoming wedding. Unfortunately the dresses were too summerary and I think I'd freeze in Toowoomba in April in them, but the search continues.

Dave finished his interview and order a uber to pick him up from the airport. Because I was nearby I decided to pick him up and show him my driving skills in the city. He didn't need an omg bar, so I must be a good driver.

I had another lunch time meeting and then spent the afternoon doing some more tedious admin task, but it's been good have some time to get these off the to do list. It's also been good just relaxing and taking time out.

After being woken up at 2am with a passing storm it could be a sign that the monsoonal rains aren't too far away.
We did soon get back to sleep after the storm had passed with more bark than bite so to speak.
This resulted in us having a sleep in and a lasy start to the day
Mel reviewed our budget and after a bit of tweaking we have a better idea of what we could do over the next few months.

We also looked at ways to promote Meierkat Enterprises while we explore the top end, and with all this thinking it was time for a swim.

Tonight I finished the theory assessment for my rsa,rsg now just have the practical video assessment to go.

Slack.

Every now and then we forget to post. We thought we had our routine but guess it still needs some work. Just like in life.

Yesterday I assigned as a work day and caught up on my tasks. They have offered some extra hours so that will help with our finances. We also have been offered some work starting in May at Litchfield. We are still assessing our options but it looks promising.

We have booked ourselves into our site till the end of February so we can explore, travel, and work. The park offered us free rent for work but the sums don't add up so we'll pay. You always need to check the offer to make sure it's fair to all parties.

Dave decided to start his RSA and RSG training and is smashing it out. Wait till he gets to the final assessment, it's the pits. 8 video recordings presenting to address the issues. But I'm sure he'll do fine. Guess neither one of us will be presenters.

We did find plenty of time for lunch and went for a swim and we are still eating well on the road.

Moving day.

We packed up the van and made our way up to say goodbye to our host Shelly and Ben. They were able to tell us the feather we found on our site when we arrived was most likely not a local bird. From the vibrant colours of blue and gold we determined it might be from a macaw bird. Maybe a previous guest left it behind from there pet bird. Who knows but it might be the beginning of a feather collection. 🤔

We drove into Darwin and set up camp. A few work tasks knocked over before we went food shopping.

The shopping centre offered lots of choice and we are grateful to have options again. I also got a bargain, new pj bottoms for $4. Still haven't lost my touch.

Ever since I've known David he was always commented how he wished nestle would still make banana flavoured quik. Today his dreams came true as I found a jar. Never thought I'd find it in Darwin. It's not make in Australia but the flavour the same, so Dave's happy.

Looking forward to staying put while we explore Darwin.

Happy Australia Day.

We celebrated in style with a lazy sleep in then we headed out into the National Park to do more exploring.

The park was alot busier today but we expect that it will be 10 times worse in the Dry season.

Our 1st stop was the cathedral termite mounds. Although not the tallest we'll see along our travels it was still pretty cool to see. The Queen hides at the bottom of the mound so we learnt something new.

Tolmar falls was our next hike. The difference between these falls was the rock formations and how it was almost like a tunnel in the rocks. The water seeps down the porous sandstone until it reaches a more waterproof layer like quartile.

After our walk it was time for another dip to cool off to onto the open swimming holes. Buley rockhole, which had plenty of Australia Day goers thinking the same thing. The water was clear and inviting.

Not a bad way to spend Australia day by finishing the day with a NT brewed drink.

Rock pools
Today we ventured back into litchfield np to continue to explore this beautiful part the NT.
1st stop was Greenant Creek which has cultural significance to the local indigenous people so swimming is not permitted, however following the 2.7km return trail to Tjaetaba falls we soon found a spot to cool off and have lunch by the rock pool, before returning to the car to head down the road to Florence falls.
The trail wasn't as long but the 135 steps down to the rock pool was the shorter option. We were soon in the water and found it so relaxing, and watching the young ones jumping off the rocks into the water, before returning up the 135 steps to the carpark. Thankfully the humidity wasn't as high as yesterday and we made it back to camp not ringing wet in sweat. We decided to book another night here to explore more tomorrow.

Lost.

This morning adventure required some 4wd driving skills as we went exploring for the lost city. The lost city is normally closed this time of year due to the wet weather, but as the monsoon season hasn't begun we were lucky to drive in for a looksy.

These rock formations make it look like an ancient ruin. I was expecting monkeys but only saw a buffalo on they way there.

We headed further into litchfield national park up to cascade falls but it was closed except for 3.6km track and it was mid day an neither dave and I felt like that challenge.

We stopped at wangi falls and were impressed with the clear and amount of water in the swimming hole but due croc it was closed. We looked at the sign it was 80m walk to the viewing deck, we thought we could do that, took some pics, then thought only 300m to the tree top platform, we went ok, we can do that. Get to the top enjoyed the view and reassessed and thought only an extra 400m if we do the loop. Ok, 1.6kms not so bad. Well the time we got back to the car we were drenched in sweat. The coolness of the rainforest gave us the wrong impression. Although the walk was fine the humidity got us today. We were lucky enough to see all the wild ginger in flower on the walk thou.

Back the car the air con was well received. We stopped at a couple of other spots but due to not having a change of clothes we decided to go back to camp and head out again tomorrow and enjoy some of the open swimming holes.

Edith Falls

With a early morning start we decided to do the 2.6km loop track to the top pools where it was still open for swimming and no risk of those water lizards with big teeth, after making it to the waterhole we took in the views of the waterfalls before cooling off in the water, but not venturing too far from the edge as the current was quite strong with the amount of water flowing at the moment, but not enough for the rangers to close them off. It great to see these areas in the wet season. So after a nice relaxing dip we made our way back down via the other side of the river that returned back to the campground.
Mel had a couple of meetings to attend, and again it's been great for her to do this in such remote locations thanks to starlink.
We soon packed up and headed further north and have set up camp on the edge of Litchfield n/p for a couple of days and will explore more waterfalls tomorrow.

Edith falls.

We started the day with some final packing and cleaning and left Katherine this morning after saying our final farewells. As you know we like to travel long distances so made our way 45mins down the road to Edith falls.

We arrived just before lunch so decided to check out the lower falls and go for swim, only to find out the swim area is closed due to potential water risks.

The lower falls were lovely and we explored the camp grounds and decided it was to hot to do the longer walk up to the other swimming area.

After setting up site we pulled out a book and had a nap under a shady tree. Unfortunately the sun kept moving so that meant we did too.

Tonight we saw our first and only fire flies, but light kept going out so now we not sure.

We must admit being in an unpowered site with no geny access is a little on the hot side, we must be getting soft and like our ac to much.

After a few calls to family and friends we are now ready for an early night with an early morning hike.

Final preparations
First task of the day was to drop the van off to be serviced before coming back to get the rest of the house packed and cleaned. After lunch we headed out to see our friends and say farewell for now but we will catch up again soon, on the way out we saw some workers with the assistance of a crane removing a large tree that had been blown over in one of the recent storms, before picking up the van and finish packing
The van did need new bearings as the old ones wouldn't have lasted until next service with the kms we are doing and is nice to know they are in good condition, the service guy also discovered only 1of 4 brakes connected but that is all fixed now and nice to know we can stop better too.
So with that all sorted we will put in the last few things before hitting the road again in the morning

Deja vu

Today was packing the van, cleaning the house and getting ready to move again.

I think moving out of the van has reconfirmed my love for living in a smaller space that has less cleaning. For some reason I only need 30 mins in the van but hours for a house.

After a food shop and walk down to the low level bridge we are now all packed and the van is ready to go for a service tomorrow. The low level bridge is now under water which explains why they keep it closed for the wet season. We have storms most nights but didn't think enough to have that much water over the bridge. Only 400mm since September. So it must be a really low bridge. 😆

I even found sometime to get admin and some paid work completed.

19/01/2025

Today was our last shift at breeze holiday park so this means in the morning we pack the van up ready to move on in a couple of days as we have the van booked in on Tuesday morning for a service as the van has travelled over 10,000 kms since leaving home and want to make sure the wheels don't fall off on our next leg.
This time we don't have other work lined up as yet but know where we end up next we will have a job in no time but this also means we have a bit of time to explore while we can get some great deals on accommodation and experiences in the NT during the "WET" season that is running late at this stage

Packing.

I woke at 4am this morning where I found myself going over the million things I still have on my to do list. So out of bed and started taking items back to the van.

The idea of empty the van giving it a good clean and repacking was a good one but unfortunately we just didn't get enough time to get it all done.

On a positive it has allowed us to review what we had and what we want to give away. Hopefully the van will be a few kgs lighter when it's finished with the repack.

At work we did our morning cleans and attended to new guest arrivals. I did get to see some cockies near the front door.

We had a spa tonight before locking the pool.
