Say whaaaaat?!

Tasmanian devils glow under UV light! Toledo Zoo has reported the first documented case of biofluorescence in these animals: the skin around the snout, eyes, and inner ear of the Tasmanian devil absorbs UV light and reemits it as blue, visible light.

It's !

It's a day of celebration to draw international attention to the reasons cassowaries are globally important and need to be protected.

Did you know that cassowaries' digestive system is gentle enough to keep the seeds of the eaten fruits intact? As cassowaries roam the rainforest they disperse the seeds (use your imagination!) into a new area of the rainforest in their own special fertiliser formula. They are tireless rainforest gardeners and tree planters!

Today (and every day!) we want to celebrate the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) and the conservation efforts of everyone who are working to protect them, their home, and the other unique and endangered animals of the rainforest.

A female lichen huntsman spider at night, right after her babies hatched. That whitish blob in the upper right corner is the silk cover under which the babies grew from egg to spider. When the silk nest lifted, the spiderlings slowly crawled away from mom. We observed mom catching little moths and other insects and had her babies run around and sometimes over her. Earlier on, she even tucked a runaway baby back into the nest with one of her long legs. Nature is supremely fascinating.

CritterCorner - Terrestrial snails, aka land snails, are a group of land-dwelling gastropods that have the ability to breathe air (this includes slugs, which are very similar to snails except they lack a shell) & they are often referred to as Natures Recyclers.⠀
The Wet Tropics area in far north Queensland is home to over 220 species of terrestrial snails (more than half of which have not been formally described yet) and at least 86 of these species are micro-snails, meaning their shells are less than 5mm in diameter.⠀
Can you spot the micro-snail in this photo? 🐌⠀

One of our favourite Australian marsupial species is now three!

The sugar glider is an icon of the Australian bush. But discovering it's actually three distinct species has big consequences for its conservation.

A very special moment shared with a cassowary chick. Cassowaries have a good spatial memory of their territory and the male (who provides all parental care) will lead the chicks around to various sources of water and fruiting trees within his territory. When the chicks become independent they know where to find what they need until they leave (or are chased out) to find territories of their own.

Davidsonia is a genus containing three rainforest tree species native to Australia, that are commonly known as the Davidson or Davidson's plum. The fruits superficially resemble the European plum, but are not closely related. All species have an edible sour fruit with burgundy coloured flesh and are highly regarded as gourmet bushfood.

Have you had a chance to watch The Dodo video of Vern the sugar glider? We had the privilege of raising this little fellow and his friends last year. We are happy to report that they have completely assimilated back into the wild and we occasionally see and hear them in the trees around our property.
