Testing Your Smoke Alarms – there’s more to it than you think
Smoke alarms are life-saving devices that detect fire smoke and emit a loud sound to alert occupants of potential danger.
It is important to remember, though, that smoke alarms can only help if they are functioning correctly. If not maintained properly, your smoke alarm could fail you when you need it most.
Most people think that you only need to check if your smoke alarm emits a sound, however you also need to ensure that your alarm smoke sensors are working. See the following key steps for testing your smoke alarms.
Step 1 – Test the Power
Most smoke alarms have a light that indicates the unit is receiving power. However, you should still use the test button to ensure that the alarm will sound properly. You can do this by pushing and holding the test button for a few seconds.
Get someone to assist with the testing and ask them to check if the sound can be heard from the furthest distance from the alarm.
If the alarm doesn’t emit a sound, you know that your alarm is not receiving power. You may need to replace the batteries, or call an electrician to check the wiring if your alarm is hardwired.
Step 2 – Check the Smoke Sensor
In addition to making sure that the unit is receiving power, you need to make sure that the alarm’s smoke sensor is working. You can purchase an inexpensive aerosol spray, which is designed specifically for testing smoke alarms. If your alarm does not sound when you use this product as directed by the manufacturer, the sensor in your alarm may be faulty. If this is the case, replace your alarm immediately.
Step 3 – Check the Expiry Date
While testing your smoke alarm you should also check and make a note of the expiry date for the alarm and the battery if your alarm is battery powered. Replacing an alarm and/or battery before their expiry date will ensure that the alarm is working when needed.
