I can't believe we are finally at the end of our honeymoon but finishing in style in Singapore!! 😁

Staying at the beautiful Parkroyal Collection Pickering as our base, we spent our 4 days eating and shopping our way through this fantastic city!

The weather was a bit all over the place which limited the amount of sightseeing we wanted to do but we fit in a drenched experience at Universal Studios which was more fun than it sounds lol

Highlights include all the amazing hawker food we tried, Singapore Sling at Raffles Long Bar, Fish Head Curry, Singapore Chilli Crab and Pepper Crab and lots and lots of dumplings!

In retrospect this was a very foodcentric end to what has been an unbelievable honeymoon! 😊

Back to reality...

From the highlands of Nuwara Eliya and Ella we finally leave the beautifully cool climate to return to the overbearing humidity and heat as we head to Yala National Park! 🐘 🐆 🦚

One of several amazing national parks throughout Sri Lanka its drawcard is the amazing range of both flora and fauna within! Having done so many safaris in Africa it was nice to relive those experiences albeit in a totally different environment!

I don't think I've ever seen so many peacocks in my life, along with all the spotted dear, wild boars, buffalo's and monkeys and so many different bird species! Well worth the early morning start!

From Yala we made some quick stops at a buffalo curd making demonstration to learn how this delicious treat is made, especially when lathered with lots of treacle 😋

Another quick stop at coconut tree hill in Mirissa for that insta shot! Unfortunately packed with so many tourists these days compared to when I first came and this place was empty, oh well 🤷🏽‍♂️

We then stopped at Galle with its heritage listed fort full of amazing Portugese and Dutch architecture after which we enjoyed possibly my best meal of Chilli Crab along the beachside! 😋 🦀

This was followed by a really fun river safari after which we switched off and enjoyed a few nice long days of doing nothing on the pristine beaches of Beruwala!

We were coincidently here during Sri Lankan New Years so the resort was holding some fun activities which we certainly took part in along with witnessing some of the local traditional dances and foods!

A side trip to a Turtle Conversation Park was also super interesting learning about the hands on process to protect and release the hundreds and thousands of eggs laid along these western beaches!

Our final stop is Colombo which we spent mostly eating and shopping with a final dinner at the one and only Ministry of Crab!! 🦀 😁

With Nuwara Eliya as our base we explore Dumro Tea Plantation one of thousands that cover this highland area! 🍵

At its peak they'll process 6000kg of leaves a day which, after all it's processing complete, amounts to approx 1200kg of dried product! The finer the powder the stronger the tea and this is how it's graded and separated! 💪🏽

From here its then sent to the tea auctions in Colombo where the larger tea houses purchase the leaves to make into their own proprietary blends! Think Lipton and Dilmah!

Another early morning start has us heading to Horton Plains! A massive national park at an elevation of approx 2200m the short hike brings us to Mini Worlds End and Worlds End; two amazing look out points across the valley below!

It's time then to catch the train to Ella!! One of my most memorable experiences from last time, I had to do it again, this time with a very excited Dharmini in tow! 😁

We then arrive in Ella where we visited Nine Arch Bridge as well as thankfully our last hike of the trip up to Mini Adams Peak! 😮‍💨

We now head south towards Kandy with a stop at Dambulla Caves!

Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160m over the surrounding plains!

Five separate caves contain about 150 absolutely stunning Buddha statues and paintings, some of Sri Lanka's most important and evocative religious art!

From here we continue onwards as the landscape changes from expansive lakes and rainforest to thick coconut groves and spice gardens. The temperature cools and we enter Matale a region famous for it's spices! 🌶

We had an in-depth walk through one of the local gardens followed by an immersive cooking class learning how to make traditional Sri Lankan prawn curry 😋

On arrival into Kandy we visited the Temple of the Tooth Relic where Buddha's Tooth is interred. Beautiful grounds and amazing relics and art showing Buddhisms introduction to Sri Lanka and its relevance today!

The following day we visited a Gem factory learning all about how the precious stones are mined and then polished! Sri Lanka being famous for its Blue Sapphires along with so many other gemstones, I left with a significantly lighter wallet! 💎 💎 💎

We then explored the town wandering its many streets full of stalls of fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, fish and knick knacks as we see all the locals scrambling to prepare for the upcoming Sri Lankan New Years in a few days! 🎆

We finished our time in Kandy wondering through the expansive and world renowned Botanical Gardens! 🌼

07/04/2024

As we travel back in time we head to Polonnaruwa, the second ancient capital of Sri Lanka! 🇱🇰

Built by Parakramabahu I the city is filled with temples, Buddhist statues and stupas, monastic schools, dorms and remnants of the Royal Palace and Gardens!

It was the royal capital for both the Singalese and Chola Empires and this can be seen in both the Hindu and Buddhist influence throughout the complex!

We followed this by travelling even further back to the first ancient capital Anuradhapura!

A political and religious capital that flourished for 1,300 year that was abandoned after an invasion in 993. Hidden away in dense jungle for many years, the enormous site, with its palaces, monasteries and monuments, is now accessible once again!

Considering excavation really only started in the 1990s and only 30% has been uncovered, it blows the mind how huge this place was!

Amazing insight into the technology at the time includes a city wide irrigation system, proper toilets, terracotta water pipes, granite filters and the geometrical and cosmological influences in the buildings themselves! 🤓

Then we accidently found our way into another Ayurvedic massage session 😁

Ayubowan and Vanakkam! 🇱🇰

We are finally in Sri Lanka yaaay! 🥳🥳🥳

In 2019 I came here for the first time and this country stole my heart so I promised I would be back, this time bringing along a very enthusiastic and excited Dharmini! 😁

After all the go go go of our previous destinations we stopped for some rest and relaxation in Negombo! 🌞

Famous for its sandy beaches and centuries old fishing industry, I of course had to drag Dharmini out of bed at 4.30am so we could go to the fish market lol

It's the go to place if you want the cheapest and freshest produce and the market was abuzz with activity! Most likely full of restaurants and hotels sourcing their produce with frantic bidding going on around the massive stockpiles of tuna that had come in that morning! 🐟🐟🐟

The rest of our time here was spent catching up on sleep, lazing by the pool, taking in some of the local sights including a unique lagoon boat ride and most importantly trying all the amazing food!! 😋

We then moved onto Habarana which is our base for the next 3 days. Dubbed the cultural triangle it's the centre of some of Sri Lanka's most famous UNESCO heritage sites!

After an enormous lunch (highly recommend the food, do not recommend it before a massive hike) it's time to tackle Sigiriya!

Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is famous for it's palace ruins on top of a massive 350 metre high rock surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and other structures!

Built by the fifth-century king Kashyapa I, who ruled the native Sinhalese dynasty, the Moriya, the imposing fortress was the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom until Kashyapa was defeated!

While the climb itself isn't imposing, doing it in 36 degree heat at 100% humidity is what gets you! All worth it in the end with amazing 360 views over the lush forests, wide lakes and imposing mountains in the background! 😮‍💨

After the intense climb we booked ourselves into another of the areas major attractions; Ayuvedic massage!

Suffice it to say we slept very well that night! 😴

The Ngorongoro crater, also known as 'Africa's Garden of Eden’, is made of a vast caldera, formed when a volcano the size of Mount Kilimanjaro erupted and then collapsed on itself over 2.5 million years ago!

The coolest thing about it now is the huge amount of animal and bird life condensed into a 20sqkm area making it great for up close and personal encounters, especially with the flamingos of which there were thousands!! 🦩🦩🦩

From here its onwards to our final stop back in Kenya in Amboseli National Park for our last game drive watched over by the towering Mt Kilimanjaro ⛰️

An early morning wake up has us driving across the border to Tanzania!!

We almost didn't make it with one of the rivers we needed to cross, overflowing with water from last night's rain! Certainly an experience!

Once in Tanzania we head to the Serengeti for the next part of our adventure! 🐒🦁🦓🐃🐗🦒🐘

Highlights were seeing the migration of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras, getting up close and personal with a voyple of black vervet monkeys and my personal favourite CHEETAHS!!! 🐆

The Masai Mara is one of the most famed reserves in Kenya if not Africa as a whole!

It's namesake comes from the ancestral Maasai Tribes who described the area as Mara or wide spotted areas of trees!

Such an enormous space we found ourselves driving for long periods to get from one side to another but the place was full of amazing wildlife and landscapes!

Highlights are definitely meeting the local Masai villagers and also the Hot Air Balloon oh and finding this pride with all these cute cubs!! 🦁🦁🦁

Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru lies on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, surrounded by wooded and bushy grassland, and teeming with amazing wildlife! 🐦🦒 🦁🦓

On the way we stopped right on the equator to witness the Coriolis effect!! Water goes anticlockwise or clockwise depending on which side you stand 😲

Getting up close and personal with impala, giraffes and zebras during a nature walk was so cool as well and the following day we joined a pride of lions for breakfast as they tucked into a fresh kill of buffalo!!! 😋

The Lake is also home to a sea of flamingos and pelicans which bring with it a sea of... smells 😐

Lake Nakuru Lodge also provided an amazing backdrop for this stop before we head down to the Masai Mara!

We continue onwards to Ol Pejeta Conservancy! 🇰🇪

Resting at the foot of Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a beautiful destination for nature enthusiasts!

The Conservancy is renowned for protecting various species, including the world's last 2 northern white rhinos!

The last male died 2yrs ago so conservation efforts have ramped up and i wish them only the best!

There was a wide variety of wildlife, from lions to giraffe and elephants, hyenas, buffalo, impala, rhinos as well as chimpanzees! 🐒🦁🦬🦏

The Serena Sweetwater Camp was one of my favourites on this trip and the night game drive was a totally different experience seeing some of the predators and animals out and about!

My favourite part was having a watering hole right outside our tent so we consistently saw animals come and go! 😁

Jambo Kenya!! 🇰🇪

A lifetime dream is finally achieved as we begin our amazing safari adventure in Samburu National Park!

Located in Northern Kenya about 7 hours from Nairobi this park is 165sqkm of open savannah!

The reserve is famous for the Big 5 amount many other animals! It's one thing to see them on TV which is amazing enough but when you are within arms length to these creatures there are just no words!

We even spotted the most elusive of all, the Leopard!!

What a way to start!!! 😁

Our last moments in Dubai are spent doing a little more shopping, enjoying the amazing pool and checking out some of the major sights like Atlantis the Palm, Burj al Arab, the Museum of the Future and the Frame!

What better way to finish though than dune bashing through the desert, followed by some camel riding, learning about falcons, and a sumptuous night of food and entertainment under the stars!

Dubai Continues as we explore the beautiful Miracle Gardens! 🌼

Full of massive installations all covered in flowers its a surreal walkthrough knowing this is in the Middle of a desert!

Amazingly crafted and immaculately kept, it's easy to get lost in everything with something new to discover at every turn!

We followed this up by a visit to Global Village. Consider it a theme park of sorts where each nation represented can offer their food, clothing, crafts and experience! 🍡🫖🌯

The sheer size is overwhelming and we struggled to see everything in the short time alloted. Regardless we ate and drank our way through picking up lots of nice little trinkets along the way!

We finished the day heading to the fountain by our hotel crowned by the towering Khalifeh for their nightly show! ⛲️

Welcome to Dubai! 🇦🇪

Everytime I come here its just bigger and better and more new and exciting things to do!

Even with 4 days here it still wasn't enough and could have easily spent another week!

Our hotel is the Palace Downtown and it was absolutely beautiful! Location and landscaping and service was amazing!

We started our time with a tour of Old Dubai, it's old souks full of spices and handicrafts and most impressive, the gold souks!! 💵

We then got to the Burj Khalifeh for sunset from where we watched all the tiny ants living their lives 880 metres below us! 🙃

Then we accidently spent some money accidently shopping till 1am in Dubai Mall... let's not talk about it 😅

One of the sites I've been looking forward to the most... Abu Simbel! 😁

Abu Simbel is among the most awe-inspiring monuments of Egypt. It was cut into the living rock by King Ramesses II and is most well known for the four imposing seated colossal statues that dominate its facade!

The temple was built with such precision that on two days a year, the 22nd of February and 22nd of October, the sun’s rays enter the temple, cross the main hall, and illuminate the innermost statues! 😶‍🌫️

Another rock-cut temple to the north, known as the Small Temple, is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramesses II’s Great Royal Wife, Queen Nefertari.

One of the most remarkable aspects of these temples is they were moved from their original location in 1968 after the Aswan High Dam was built, as it threatened to submerge them. Cut into thousands of pieces and reassembled 200m further up the river!!

💯 worth the long drive there and back! After a quick lunch it was into our final historical site at Philae Temple!

Beautifully situated on an island in the Middle of the Nile, this temple also had to be relocated so as not to be submerged from the building of the Dam (though it was half submerged before any effort was made)!! 😮

The Philae Temple was built by the last dynasty of ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic. It is dedicated to Isis, the goddess of healing, birth, and magic, her husband Osiris, and their son Horus. The temple is one of the last places where ancient Egyptian religion survived after Christianity swept the shores in 550AD!

Another fantastic temple shrouded in myth and history and certainly an amazing way to finish what has been a remarkable journey down the Nile before we head back to Cairo!! 🥰

Our last stop in Luxor before we begin our cruise down the Nile was Karnak Temple! 🥰

The compex was developed over the course of 1,000 years, being consistently added to over the ages. It was, at its peak, the largest and most important religious complex in ancient Egypt. The most significant structure, and the largest religious building ever built, is the Temple of Amun-Ra, considered to be where that god lived on earth!

The complex is huge but what stands out the most is the hall of massive columns which have recently been regenerated to expose the contracting colours underneath! 😍

The following day we explored Kom Ombo, a temple dedicated to the Crocodile God in both reverance and fear to appease the nearby population from constant attacks. What's unique about this temple is its dedicated to two difference deities; the crocodile-headed God Sobek and Horus. These were two different sects of its time, a bit like having a Christian and Muslim temple joined together!

After a day's exploring its time to rest before a very early morning start to...Abu Simbel!! 😁

11/03/2024

Valley of the Kings was surreal and our first experience of today! Located on the West Bank of the Nile, we passed the Collosi of Memnon before continuing onwards! 🌞

During Egypt's New Kingdom, the valley became a royal burial ground for pharaohs such as Tutankhamun, Seti I, and Ramses II, as well as queens, high priests, and other elites!

The tombs are covered in elaborate carvings and hieroglyphics showing the lives of the pharoahs, the stories of birth, life and afterlife and their many conquests. Almost all the tombs where packed with treasures yet the only one to remain hidden and untouched until the 1900s was King Tuts whose mummy still rests within!

We got to explore 3 amazing tombs and to know that these places laid undisturbed for over 3500 years is mind boggling! 😵‍💫

From here it was onto an alabaster factory to learn about the regions most popular craft and export before tackling Queen Hatchepsuts temple! The temple is one of the grandest in Egypt and its design is very unique and stands out from all the others we have seen!

There are countless amazing stories both surrounding the tombs and the Queens temples but I don't want to write a novel. Just know this place is full of amazing discoveries and stories and what is most unbelievable is there is still a significant amount yet to be unearthed and discovered 😯

What. A. Day. 😁

Good morning Luxor! 🌞

First stop Dendera. This is one of the best sights in Luxor, originally called Tentyris and was one of the most important religious centres in ancient Egypt!

The city was rendered sacred by three sanctuaries: the Sanctuary of Horus, the god of the sky and protector of the pharaohs, the Sanctuary of Ihy, the young sistrum-playing son of Horus, and the Sanctuary of Hathor of which only the latter has survived practically inact!

The amazing reliefs and vibrant colours are outstanding and some of the best preserved in Egypt!

From here it was to our hotel to check in before heading to one of my most favourite experiences so far!

Luxor Temple by night is like nothing else. Eerily beautiful is how I'd describe it! ❤️

The Luxor Temple was unique because, unlike other temples in Thebes, it was not specifically dedicated to one specific god or Pharaoh (though it was in honor of Amun-Ra).

It was instead dedicated to the new king's coronation. It served as a place of ceremony and the location where most Pharaohs were crowned.

The temple complex is made up of smaller temples all added on by consecutive rulers the most famous of which was Ramsese II. the whole thing is connected to Karnak Temple by a 2.5km paved road lined with 1200 Sphinx! 😮

Images don't do this place justice! 🥰

Today was a geeks delight! 😁

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo (EMC) is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, housing over 170,000 artefacts. It has the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities in the world!

There's so much to take in it's overwhelming and everything is so well preserved! 😮

From here it was onto a Perfume store with amazing base oils and essential oils. let's just say this was a dangerous stop for both of us money wise lol 💸

We finished the day with the Egyptian National Museum where a large collection of Royal Mummies are housed before heading for our overnight sleeper train to Luxor! 🚂

05/03/2024

The Giza pyramid complex (also called the Giza necropolis) in Egypt is home to the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx! 🐈

All were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt, between c. 2600 – c. 2500 BC. The site also includes several temples, cemeteries, and the remains of a workers' village!

Though my second time here, words cannot explain how amazing and exciting the atmosphere is and we even got to go inside the 3rd Pyramid! 😬

It also made such a massive difference that the temperature never went above 23 degrees, phew! 😅

Next we checked out a Papyrus Museum full of amazing artwork backed by genuine handmade Papyrus, a reed found abundantly along the Nile!

After a light local and sumptuous lunch it's onwards to Saqqara!

Saqqara contains the oldest complete stone building complex known in history, the Pyramid of Djoser, built during the Third Dynasty.

So Saqqara came first approx 2700BC, then the Bent and Red Pyramids followed by the most well known Great Pyramids approx 2500BC!

What a day, bring on day 2!!!

Chichen Itza is one of the main archaeological sites on the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico. It was and is a sacred city and Mayan pilgrimage centre founded by the Itza, the so-called water sorcerers, in the 5th century AD.

The Mayans developed one of the most fascinating and enigmatic cultures of the region and though this was my second time here, I felt it was more memorable. I knew what to expect which is why I could take it all in!

The cenotes followed with a welcome relief from the heat in the freezing cold and clear water after which it was back to the resort for a wind down!

Ola Amigos!

What a way to start our first day on honeymoon!

Sun shining, drinks flowing, water crisp and cool, animals....animal-ing!

We're staying at the Iberostar Queztal/Tucan which is an amazing resort built right into the forest. Beautiful grounds, amazing wildlife and fantastic all inclusive service!

When researching this for us, I balanced location, all inclusive, it's setting and reviews. There were other options much pricer but I never saw a reason to spend more considering we were exploring for most of each day.

There was certainly cheaper but I'm also a princess and wanted some luxury lol

After a morning exploring the resorts food choices, drinks a plenty, beautiful beachfront and pools, we headed to 5th Avenue to wander around Playa del Carmen itself!

5th Avenue is the main thoroughfare and tourist walk through the city surrounded by lots of shops, bars, shops, food stalls, shops and more shops.

Obvious tip... take any of the side streets, walk up a little and your food/shopping/drinks will be half the price of 5th Ave. Go to 10th or 15th Avenue for the more authentic eats too!

We finished off the day by following local advice and heading to El Fagon which had such an amazing vibe and brilliant food (which is an understatement) 10/10 would recommend!

While All Inclusive is very convenient, we have found the food to be hit and miss compares to getting out (as you should) and experiencing the local dives; it is worth it!

The night ends with the Iberostars Fire Show before heading to bed to prepare for the 4am start to... Chichen Izta tomorrow!!!

Buenos Noches!
