Would you retire in a co-housing dwelling with your mates?

A trio of couples in Ainslie have had their small co-housing community development application approved by the ACT government.

Among them is Ian Ross, who says the idea is to "encourage people to run into each other in the garden or in the kitchen" and create a sense of community.

"We were in a situation where we had big empty houses. The kids had moved and we were thinking about where we would want to retire to."

The group of six, aged between their 40s and 70s, are hoping to start building on their block this year.

"We ended up designing three units with some shared facilities," Mr Ross said.

"Each of the couples have an about 100sqm unit. It's a good size, accessible unit. And then we have a shared building, and in that we have a kitchen, a lounge area, workshop and laundry, as well as our garage."

"Of course you can be friends with neighbours but creating an environment that's a little bit closer than that is something that we were looking for."

We absolutely support spending on aged care and child care. It will help many women. But single, older women who don't own a home were completely ignored in

They are our fastest growing group of people experiencing homelessness. With no investment by the Federal Government in social housing or any measures to assist those who have lost jobs or who are living in poverty. Many of these women are receiving Job Seeker which is impossible to live on and is not being increased.

They deserve better.
