At Helix House we are concerned to protect your health. The cleaning staff have taken, and passed, a special course with the Department of Health on cleaning and sanitising to a hospital standard. We will also be adopting a practice called “triple sheeting”. Instead of the attractive grey linen doona covers and pillow slips that blend with the natural stone of the walls, as illustrated in earlier photos, we will be using the method that is common in hotels of having a sheet either side of the doona. When guests depart the white sheets will then be laundered at a high temperature.

As a rule I miss the opportunities to photograph the wild life at Helix House. By the time I get my phone out the wallaby has hopped away, the echidna has turned its back on me, the bird has taken flight. Or animals that look life size to the naked eye, shrink into tiny wee dots, and I swear to the viewer it is a fox or a micro-bat. To which the viewer says "Yes, yes, I believe you but thousand wouldn't", in a sceptical tone.

But this koala stayed put. I took this photo in the street outside Helix House. I like the way he or she seems to be saying : "What is going on over there?".

Take a walk around Helix House and you never know who you might meet. Maybe this little fellow.

Echidnas love the fish pond area, as it teams with tiny ants, and also come down to the deck outside the laundry for a drink from the bowl under the tap. In the wilder areas of the property they are less easy to see, but you can hear them as a rustle in long grass, or spot the movement of the grass as they push their way through and snuffle around looking for ants.

Daylesford is one of the few places where "ducks on the road" is a viable excuse for being a little late. The ducks are so comfortable that they will gather on the road and when you try to drive mill around in front of you, some going off to the right, others going the off to the left. But then the ducks that went right see that others went to the left, and so turn around and cross the road again. And the ducks that went left turn to catch up with the ones that went right, and cross the road again, only to realise that the ducks they are following have now changed direction again. It takes some time to sort themselves out to give way to cars.
