ANZAC DAY - LONG TAIL BOAT RIDE

Part of our 3-day Anzac Day tour to the Burma-Thailand Railway includes a long tail boat ride on the River Kwai. It is cool and refreshing on a hot day and allows for a unique view of the Bridge over the River Kwai, from the river itself.

On our 2024 tour some of the boats were held up for a couple of minutes with the Bridge Pier being busy with other departing boats. However, while they waited just downstream of the bridge, they were rewarded with a spectacular view of the morning’s tourist train crossing the bridge.

You can be part of our 2025 Anzac Day tour. But HURRY, PLACES ARE LIMITED. To find out more on our Anzac Day tours, click on the link: https://www.historicwartours.com.au/anzac-day-tours

🚨New Tour 🚨
WWII HISTORICAL TOUR OF THE ATHERTON TABLELANDS, Queensland

In WWII, the Atherton Tablelands was a training ground for our soldiers and over 100,000 passed through the region before facing the Japanese in New Guinea and beyond. Amazingly, evidence of that occupation still exists.

The team at the Atherton Tablelands WWII Historical Tours, have been busy preparing sites for this year’s tours. This includes the removal of leaf matter from the remnants of the Australian Army Hospital at Rocky Creek near Tolga, the largest in the southern hemisphere in WWII. Further remnants, lost over time, have been rediscovered. The hospital site is just one of the interesting locations visited during this half day tour.

If you are planning on a trip to North Queensland this winter, why not support a worthwhile community project and join their WWII Historical Tour held 8:30am each Wednesday during July and August.

Today we travelled out of Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau and Nui Day. During the Vietnam War, Vung Tau was the R&R city for the Australian forces and the logistics support base. Nui Dat was the base for 1st Australian Task Force.

In reality, we did two Anzac Day Ceremonies, an informal one but still meaningful, at the Nui Dat Memorial and the other, a mini service in accordance with protocols for the occasion, at the Long Tan Memorial. Of course, the Long Tan Memorial is the site of a fierce battle in 1966, against the North Vietnamese Army in which 18 of our soldiers died.

STREET FOOD TOUR

We arrived at part of Ho Chi Minh City where our guide showed us around and explained the different food types and tried to get us to decide what we would like to eat. He succeeded very well!! We were spoilt for choice. We had a sensational outing with our food cooked before us. And, there was the added bonus of mixing with locals.

REX HOTEL

During the Vietnam War, the Rex Hotel and particularly the Rooftop Bar, was a meeting place for the world’s media, military and embassy staff. It was only fitting that we should stop by for a thirst quenching drink and a chance to soak up that atmosphere from yesterday year.

WAR REMNANTS MUSEUM

A visit to the War Remnants Museum provides a snap shot of the confronting reality of war. Told from the perspective of the Vietnamese in their fight against the US, there are graphic photos, a room devoted entirely to the use of Agent Orange and war memorabilia. With such a macabre subject, it is surprising how popular this museum is.

INDEPENDENCE PALACE

A fascinating visit as part of our afternoon City Tour, was the Independence Palace. Originally the Presidential Palace until 30th May 1975 when it was captured by the North Vietnamese Army. It was looted to the extent that it was a burnt out shell. A decade later, the Vietnam Government decided to restore the building to show the people the opulence that existed while they endured a poor lifestyle. The result is that today, we have an amazing time capsule.

CU CHI TUNNELS

Started the day with a tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels. It was an extensive tunnels complex originally started during the French occupation and then expanded during the Vietnam War.

The tunnels enabled the Viet Cong to shelter underground where they had hospitals, food preparation, accommodation, and could manufacture weapons and clothing.

We arrived arrived at Cu Chi by speed boat. An exhilarating and pleasant way to avoid the heat and humidity on land. A 2 hour tour was followed by lunch and then the return journey by speed boat back to Ho Chi Minh City.

With ANZAC Day approaching, this useful illustration shows the correct wearing of medals.

Medals awarded to the wearer should be worn on the left breast.

The diagram shows Unit Citations on the right, which is correct for Army and Airforce, however Navy citations are worn on the left, under the medals.

Medals of a family member should be worn on the right breast to show that the wearer is not the original recipient.

State-issued medals, such as medals for service and bravery for emergency service personnel, are also worn on the right.

2025 ANZAC DAY TOURS JUST RELEASED.

2025 will be a significant year in Australia’s military history. It will mark the 110th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli and the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII and the War in the Pacific.

What better way to honour the memory of those who have fallen and served our country, by attending the Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass on the Burma-Thailand Railway or a private Anzac Day Service at the Long Tan Memorial in Vietnam.

Numbers are limited and these tours are bound to sell out. Book now to avoid disappointment.
