Magical Mouse Holidays Pre-Covid we made a living helping people plan magical Disney holidays.

Post-Covid we’ve moved on, but we’re still looking for Disney magic where we can find it, planning our own Disney adventures and loving hearing about yours.

Trip 8 - Sep 2014

Jim had a trip scheduled to Italy for work, so LJ and I tagged along and of course added a visit to Disneyland Paris onto the end of the itinerary.

We stayed at Disney’s Sequoia Lodge and scored an unexpected upgrade to a suite! This was amazing to have with LJ, since we spent plenty of time in the room for naps and rests away from the stimulating park environment.

We did make a day trip into Paris via train (there’s a station at Disneyland) and made use of the hop on hop off boat, which worked out great with a stroller and toddler in tow.

On this trip I learnt that:
✨ Paris is a lot more cautious on their ride warnings for pregnancy - there was loads I couldn’t ride including it’s a small world.
✨ Jet lag coming home from Europe hits way harder than when coming home from the US.
✨ There are some really beautiful parts of Disneyland Paris but overall it didn’t seem as well maintained as the US parks.
✨ Ducks like Disneyland in any country apparently and not just the US.
✨ There should be a playground in every Disney theme park. They’re so good for young kids.
✨ Paying for lounge access at the Disneyland Paris hotels is well worth the upgrade. The breakfast that’s included is great.
✨ The Disneyland Paris Hotel is stunning and the location can’t be beat. Staying here is on my bucket list for sure.

Trip 7 - Jan 2014

This trip we stayed at Bay Lake Tower, then sailed on the Disney Dream for 3 nights before stopping in at the Disneyland Hotel to finish off. Some people throw their kids a 1st birthday party, we opted for our first Disney trifecta!

The trip was made extra special because my sister got married while we were at Walt Disney World, forever making the Polynesian Resort a special place for our family.

On this trip I learnt that:
✨ Purchasing a seat for your under 2 year old makes for a much better flying experience. A Cares harness (if they’re tall enough) even means they can sit in it for take off and landing!
✨Buffets are great options if you have a child under 3 because they can eat off your ‘plate’ at no extra charge.
✨ Whilst January is traditionally great for low crowds, it is rather cool and wouldn’t be our first choice of times to visit now.
✨ Being able to walk to Magic Kingdom is a luxury well worth the splurge if you can swing it (splitting our 2-bedroom villa 3 ways made it more achievable).
✨ If you have any difficulty walking long distances don’t hesitate to get a scooter. We rented off a third party provider, who delivered to the hotel. This means we had it for the walks in and out of the park and back to the room.
✨ Waiting to have LJ’s first haircut at the Main Street Barber Shop was worth dealing with his crazy mop of hair leading up to and during the trip 😂.
✨ Travel insurance is something not to be compromised on. We ended up in the hospital in Nassau with LJ and the day there cost more than our entire 3-night cruise! The DCL onboard medical crew are also top notch and were so good to us throughout the whole cruise.
✨ Cruising is a great way for type-A planners (🙋🏼‍♀️) to chill a little. You’re allocated restaurants and you can always find something to do but little requires planning in advance. 3-nights went by too quickly though, just as we were hitting our stride it was time to disembark.
✨ Stopping in at Disneyland on the way home from Disney World helped us with jet lag, you just have to leave enough time to adjust to the time difference there before taking off for home.

Trip 6 - May 2013

Is there a better place for a belated birthday celebration than Walt Disney World? Not in this family there isn’t. This was also the trip we finally added a child to our touring party!

LJ’s first trip was at 4 months old and we flew all the way to Orlando for just one week. Some people thought that was crazy but from memory, flights and accommodation were ridiculously cheap and we couldn’t pass it up.

Not only was this LJ’s first trip, it was our first time visiting during May and our first time staying in the Epcot Resort Area - we decided on the Boardwalk Villas.

It is true what they say, LJ does not remember a second of this trip. I on the other hand remember it all and those memories are worth the effort and money spent on making the trip happen. If you want to go to Disney with a baby, then go. If we’ve learnt anything the past few years, it’s that you don’t know what the future will bring and if you wait for the ‘perfect age’ you might not make it, out of no fault of your own.

On this trip I learnt that:
✨ Connecting in LAX is a nightmare. We now only fly into LAX if we’re staying on the West Coast.
✨ DVC Villas are awesome. We opted for a 1-bedroom with washing machine/dryer and a kitchen, both priorities for us with a baby.
✨ The Epcot area resorts are super convenient - being able to walk to two theme parks is priceless with a stroller and there are so many dining options close by.
✨ Epcot is stunning during the Flower & Garden Festival - one of my favourite times to visit now.
✨ There are loads of rides babies can join you on and rider swap means you don’t have to miss out on your favourites that they can’t.
✨ The baby care centres in the parks are a must visit for parents. Such a calm and quiet place for changing and feeding.
✨ The boat that services the Epcot resorts is relaxing but slow. We wouldn’t recommend it for rope drop or if you’re on a tight schedule. We often hopped on board as we are leaving the parks.
✨ Character dining is such a great way to meet characters without having to wait in line.

Trip 5 - April 2012

Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo Disney were next on our research trip hit list. And yes, we did visit both Hong Kong and Japan and only visit their respective Disney parks!

We were there a long time ago now but in our experience Hong Kong had everything available in English and Chinese and all the cast members spoke English. Tokyo had signs in English but no shows and the only English cast members spoke to us was to say “no camera” when photos weren’t allowed. For this reason we wouldn’t recommend Tokyo Disney as your first Disney experience, it requires some pre-existing knowledge of how Disney theme parks work to enjoy fully (unless you speak Japanese, in which case you’ll be good to go).

On this trip I learnt that:
✨Character meet and greets are serious business in the Asian parks.
✨ The Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is styled very much like Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort. It’s gorgeous!
✨ Food in Tokyo Disney is very expensive and serving sizes are small. Thankfully they have plenty of churros.
✨ The it’s a small world buildings at both parks are gorgeous 😍.
✨ The thrill rides at the Asian parks aren’t particularly thrilling.
✨ Parades are next level and in Tokyo particularly, extremely popular. When we were there the first parade of the day was 11am and people went to claim spots first thing after entering the park!
✨ Duffy the Disney Bear is Jim’s least favourite character and the Japanese peoples’ most favourite. Many park guests had a Duffy or Shellie May (Minne’s bear) in their bag that they carried around for the day. Every land also had a designated store just for Duffy and by the end of the stay if I led Jim into one, well let’s just say if looks could kill… 😂.
✨ Popcorn buckets are a hot ticket in Tokyo as well. Different carts have different styles and flavours of popcorn to refill them with. Some people wear multiple buckets like handbags and some even come with a matching bucket for Duffy (I kid you not).
✨ Tokyo Disney Sea is a truly unique park that I would love to visit again.

Trip 5 - December 2011

This trip was my first ‘research’ trip because I realised that if I was planning Disney trips for Aussies, I needed to be on top of everything Disneyland related.

I headed off to Anaheim solo with two main goals - check out as many accommodation options as possible and test out touring plans.

I stayed at 6 different hotels over the course of a week and a half - all three Disney hotels, Howard Johnson, Candy Cane Inn and Sheraton Park.

I also filmed endless amounts of video to track my touring plans and how effective they were. This trip definitely took place pre online influencers and social media becoming mainstream. I got questioned by Disney security for filming the storefronts and Grand Californian while I was in Downtown Disney. Thankfully after they checked out my ID and I answered a few questions (proving I was just a crazy Disney fan) they let me continue on my way. 😂

On this trip I learnt that:
✨ Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel is my favourite mainland US Disney hotel, although I’d only stay here now if they had a discount.
✨ Christmas at Disneyland trumps Christmas at Magic Kingdom.
✨ Travelling to Disney parks solo can be lots of fun, especially if you want to stop and take in all the details.
✨ You need to be prepared for cold evenings and mornings in the winter months - I came home with a new Disney beanie and scarf.
✨ I’m my opinion, Disneyland does a better job with quick-service/snacks than Disney World but not with table-service offerings.
✨ The Disney ‘bubble’ is much smaller in Disneyland when compared to Disney World, which means there are some really convenient, often significantly cheaper, hotels within walking distance of the theme parks.
✨ The closer to Christmas you get, the bigger the crowd becomes. Christmas fell on a weekend this year and the week leading up to it was significantly more crowded than the week I arrived.

Looking back at the photos from this trip, it blows my mind how much the Disneyland Resort has changed in the past decade!

This is why we always keep going back to Disney, it’s constantly changing and there’s always something new to experience.

We’ll miss the opening of the reimagined Splash Mountain and one would assume Splash will be closed during our planned visit earlier in 2024.

You know what that means right? 😉

Just Announced: Strike up the band because Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is coming to Magic Kingdom Park in Florida and Disneyland Park in California in late 2024! 🎺 ✨ Learn more about this attraction’s transformation over on the Disney Parks Blog and stay tuned as we reveal more from Essence Festival in New Orleans! http://spr.ly/6184zlFgY

Disneyland announced the return of some hotel guest benefits this week.

Of particular note are changes to early entry. In the past, guests had access to one park an hour prior to opening for the length of their stay. Additionally, people holding tickets 3 or more days in length were able to select one day to enter an hour early.

Early entry has now been limited to just resort guests, is available at both parks every day BUT has been reduced to only half an hour.

Is this enough of an incentive to entice you to stay in a Disney hotel?

Me personally - probably not, unless the dollar miraculously reaches parity between now and 2024 😂. If I was only going to stay for a couple of nights I might consider the splurge but I prefer to stay longer and pace myself.

Summer is in full swing, and there are even more benefits to staying at the hotels ! Check them out and plan that summer vacay! ☀

Trip 4 - September 2011

This is the trip that started it all! And funnily enough, it wasn’t meant to include a Disney stop!

We started planning our second trip for 2011 as a Disney-free adventure - Chicago, New York, Washington DC and Boston were on the table. We booked the first three and then I started pricing out Boston and came to the realization that a week in Disney World would be cheaper than 4 nights in Boston thanks to Disney discounts. So I’m sure you can guess where we ended up 😉.

We stayed at the Polynesian Resort again and on a monorail trip to the Magic Kingdom we started chatting with another family onboard. They mentioned they were going to head to Cinderella’s castle to try and have dinner - without a reservation! After we split ways, I turned to Jim and said that those kids would be devastated when they more than likely got turned away because that’s one reservation you need to lock in as soon as they open. He replied with “there has to be something you can do with everything you know about Disney beside plan trips for us”.

So… on our return home we did some research, I enrolled in the courses I needed to in order to qualify for a travel agent license and the rest is history as they say.

On this trip I learnt that:
✨ I prefer Chicago to New York - there, I said it. 🙈
✨ While it was amazing to visit Wrigley Stadium, I will never be a baseball fan - the games just keep going on and on and on…
✨ Disney Halloween Parties are more fun than the Christmas Parties (IMHO) - great parade, fabulous fireworks soundtrack and free candy!
✨ I ❤️ Animal Kingdom.
✨ September weather in Florida is gloriously warm but does come with it’s fair share of afternoon storms.
✨ Cornbread is my favourite Disney food - Whispering Canyon Cafe is forever a must-do meal for our family.
✨ Ice hockey is way more fun to watch than baseball!
✨ I always wish I got PhotoPass when I don’t get it and wonder why I paid for it when I do get it. We didn’t get it this trip and there’s minimal photos of us together again. Note to self - just get it!

Trip 3 - January 2011

I roped Jim into a return trip with the promise of doing something non-Disney related. We ended up getting a good deal on flights for New Year’s Eve and started the trip in Orlando proper with a spot of outlet shopping before heading to Florida Keys for a couple of nights. Unluckily, Jim got diagnosed with the flu (suspected Swine variety) on day 2 of the trip and spent all of this non-Disney time in bed!

We managed to get the diagnosis in time for him to take Tamiflu and it thankfully did its job in time for our arrival at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. We were able to largely stick to our plans, just with some additional naps built into the schedule.

I don’t know what happened to the photos from this trip. We did have PhotoPass but the quality this time around was questionable. A large percentage we’re either squinting or our faces are overexposed thanks to the glare of the sun. The photos I took on the other hand, include over 60 pics of the ice hockey game we went to, and very little else. I’m going to assume they were lost somewhere between hard drive transfers some time in the last decade. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I genuinely can’t really remember all that much about this trip, I would guess it was 10 days in Disney World but maybe it was only seven? This is why I need to do these posts, so I don’t forget! Let’s safely assume we had a great time and couldn’t wait for the next visit!

Trip 2 - December 2009

After returning from our first trip, I quickly came to the realisation that the once in a life time trip I’d planned was so not going to be once in a life time 😆. Jim on the other hand was adamant that he was done with Disney and was not onboard for a return trip (how wrong he ended up being).

Enter my back up travel buddy, my younger sister Sam, who some of you may know from the time she helped out with Magical Mouse clients after ML was born. We recruited a US-based Disney specialist travel agent to help with this trip and were thrilled when Disney released free dining for our dates and she was able to upgrade us to the Polynesian Resort for our 14 night adventure.

I invested in PhotoPass for this trip and a much better quality camera, although I’m not sure my photography skills had really improved much. And yes, I made us matching T-shirts and custom character autograph cards, then spent two years making a 75 page scrapbook that I gifted Sam for Christmas. The pics in this post are some of its pages.

Takeaways from the ‘Sisters are doing it for themselves’ WDW tour:
✨Christmas time in Disney is a next level of magic that will forever be my favourite.
✨December weather in Orlando is unpredictable - we started the trip with 27 degrees and ended it with 7!
✨ The toy soldiers in the Christmas parade are the best kind of awesome.
✨ The US agent was a step above the Aussie one because she was all over our Disney booking but she was limited in what she could help us with.
✨ There is no better Santa than the one that visits Disney. 🎅🏻 🤶🏻
✨ The dining plan was still a ridiculous amount of food.
✨ Even after two weeks, I still hadn’t maxed out my Disney threshold.

21/06/2022

Let’s kick off this Magical Mouse reincarnation with a series of posts I’m calling ‘A walk down Disney memory lane’ - one post per previous trip including some photos and a short recap.

Trip 1 - January 2007

I had dreamed of visiting Disney since childhood and thought our honeymoon was the perfect opportunity to make that dream a reality. Then Jim declared that Disney World was not a honeymoon location (he chose to ignore the data I presented him with), so I did what all good negotiators would do… I agreed to postpone my Disney dream for a year providing I could visit both Disneyland and Walt Disney World for our first wedding anniversary.

And so our first double header finally happened after two years of planning and researching. We spent 5 nights in the Disneyland Hotel, followed by 10 nights in Animal Kingdom Lodge at Walt Disney World and I managed to find some photos that we’re in together.

This was in the days where the dining plan at Disney World included an entree, main and dessert for each table service meal and by night seven of the Disney World leg, Jim and I couldn’t eat any more food!

We learned on this trip that we aren’t huge fans of flying into the west coast of the USA, after Jim fell asleep on a bench in Downtown Disney waiting for our room.

It would also appear from the photos that the Disneyland Hotel was well and truly overdue for a refurbishment 😂.

Point and shoot digital cameras were pretty shocking quality back then and Jim and I, it would appear, were pretty shocking photographers.

This trip, unbeknownst to us, was also where we learned that travel agents in general don’t really ‘get’ Disney destinations. I visited the travel agent that booked our honeymoon when Disney World first released their 2007 packages and was told they weren’t available for booking. I came home, stayed up until Disney opened and paid a ridiculous amount in international call charges to make my reservations over the phone with Disney directly. Turns out I’d end up spending many nights in the future doing exactly the same thing for some pretty awesome clients.

Tell me about the plans for your next trip now the World is largely reopen!

Until yesterday our next overseas trip was going to be Italy and Paris in mid 2024, and then LJ pulled out some old photo albums…

I realised a couple of things while we reminisced about my first Disney trip back in 2007 for our 1st wedding anniversary (where I clearly didn’t ask many people to take photos of us together and I hadn’t mastered the selfie without a front camera 😆).

1. I don’t have a lot of time left when both my kids will still actually be kids and prime age for enjoying everything Disney has to offer.
2. I didn’t really get to say a proper goodbye to my happy place thanks to Covid. One minute I was finishing a Disneyland trip thinking of the next adventure and then the World shut down - definitely have unfinished business.

So, it looks like we’re heading back to Disney in 2024 and we need the time between now and then to save, because man are things more expensive than they were pre-Covid 💸.

I plan on spending the next two years doing what I do best and planning my kids one heck of a final Disney hurrah! Although, if you know me at all you’ll be fully aware despite what I say it won’t be our last Disney adventure.

I thought I’d share some of the planning process, my thoughts and new things I learn along the way (a lot has changed). Bear in mind, if this were a romance novel, it would 100% be classified as a slow burn, so there won’t be a lot of action for awhile and even then I probably won’t have a set schedule for posts, just as I feel like it.

I should clarify that Magical Mouse Holidays as a functioning travel agency won’t be returning. That ship sailed when Covid hit and I recently started a new job in the education field that I am loving, so don’t have the time to add more to my workload.

I might pop some q&a posts up every now and then and try answering some questions about upcoming trips. Would that be something you’d be interested in?

Have a magical day ✨

26/09/2020

Long time no post! How is everyone surviving the year I’m sure we’re all keen to get past and forget?

We’re taking the events of 2020 as a sign and closing down Magical Mouse Holidays indefinitely.

We’re not sure when we’ll be comfortable heading back to the USA (once restrictions are lifted) and it’s hard to help people plan trips without regularly visiting the parks.

I was very negligent with finishing my trip report from this time last year 😱, so if you’re keen for a bit of Disney magic let me know and I might be able to finalize it while on school holidays over the next two weeks.

Day 9 - Part 1

I know, I know, it’s been so long since my last post about the trip. Here’s day one of our magical cruise on the Disney Wonder.

06/11/2019

This was my childhood. I am sooooo excited!

Yes Jubilee, you can watch the 90s Marvel Comics X-Men animated series on 💥

23/10/2019

Day 8 - Part 2

Here’s hoping I don’t fall asleep while writing this one. Noticed a few errors in last night’s post were I had nodded off mid typing and not noticed.

Here’s the last of our Disneyland adventures, hopping over to Disneyland to do some of our favorite attractions one last time before driving down to San Diego for the cruise.

22/10/2019

Day 8 - Part 1

I’m getting back on track... People often ask how I can spend 7 days in Disneyland and this post goes some way to answering that. At this stage of the trip we’d ticked off most attractions and shows, without totally wiping out the kids, so I let the kids have a day of picking what we do (aside from the dinner reservation I’d already made). They loved it and so did we!

I will point out that we had saved most of our pixie dusted FastPasses until this day, so we were able to be a little more lax in the order we did things in. We were given the FastPasses after a couple of issues on arrival day that Disney, in true Disney fashion, made right.

21/10/2019
Disneyland

Galaxy’s Edge reservations can be made online 60 days in advance now! When we were there people without reservations were being turned away from Oga’s.

Starting on Oct. 21, to make your trip planning easier and give you more flexibility, Oga’s Cantina (as well as Savi’s Workshop and Droid Depot) will begin offering reservations up to 60 days in advance!

16/10/2019

Day 7 - Part 2

Following breakfast we headed back to the hotel where ML napped and LJ swam before meeting back up at California Adventure for dinner and a show.

15/10/2019

Day 7 - Part 1

Today was post-Halloween Party recovery day!

We slept in, headed to a late breakfast, took another break and then spent the evening in California Adventure Park to see World of Color.

Here’s a recap of our morning...

14/10/2019

So we’re home 😔. Once I got behind with posts on the cruise I decided it was easier to just wait and post about the rest of the trip once we got home. Jet lag has hit me tonight but I’ll do my best to start posting tomorrow night. I’m excited to share details of the rest of our trip.

If you’re waiting for an email or message from me, I’ll endeavor to get to those as soon as my body clock has me able to keep my eyes open beyond 8pm.

05/10/2019

If you’re looking for us over the next week, we’ll be on this beauty with limited phone service enjoying some switched off time. See you on the other side!

04/10/2019

Day 6 Part 3 - Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween Party!

We purchased our tickets for the Halloween Party as soon as they were released back in May - happy Mother’s Day to me! The tickets cost $120 USD per person, which totals to just over $700 AUD based on today’s exchange rate 😳. To be honest, if the exchange rate had been this low back then I wouldn’t have purchased them, that’s the cost of one 10-Day ticket! Even at the exchange rate I paid, was it worth it? To be honest, probably not if we’re talking simply about what you get for your money in comparison to a day in the park. If you are a major character hunter then it offers rare characters you won’t find elsewhere.

So why did we buy tickets? We’d promised ML she could attend a Halloween Party the next time we were in Disney for one when she missed out on the last trip due to being a little too young still and we’re kind of Halloween Scrooges at home, so our kids love the chance to ‘celebrate’ Halloween. I think they said ‘trick or treat’ to every single cast member in every treat trail we visited! It never got old for them.

03/10/2019

Day 6 Part 2 - I think I’ve been waiting for this moment since I found out I was pregnant with LJ... finally I got to watch a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover.

ML was super excited about this and had been checking all week about when we were going. I pre-booked online to coincide with our Halloween Party, so she had a little while to wait. There were people still making appointments for the day when we checked in just after 3pm, so it’s definitely not as hard to get into as the Walt Disney World boutique.

We opted for the castle package so ML could get a new princess dress and we don’t anticipate it being an every trip occurrence. The total for this came to $215.45 including tax, which certainly isn’t cheap but it included a lot. So here’s how it played out.

03/10/2019

Day 6 Part 1 - This day had two big events scheduled, Miss ML’s Bibbidi Bibbidi Boutique appointment and The Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween Party at California Adventure Park.

With a late night planned we opted for a sleep in and morning by the pool, so here’s some photos of the pool area at the Disneyland Hotel and the beginning of our afternoon adventure.

02/10/2019

Day 5 - Another Disneyland Park day to hit the other half of the attractions. We were planning on heading back into the park for the final night of Spectromagic’s summer stint but we really aren’t night time park people. We decided while at the park to stay through until around 2 and then just be done for the day. Hats off to those people that can go from park open to park close, I have no idea how you do it!

I was super tired while writing these captions, so if they don’t make sense you can assume I nodded off while typing, which happened more than once. 😂

02/10/2019

Day 5 Part 2 - Keeping the posts under 20 photos seems to help with the posting speed, so I’ll keep splitting them up going forward when need be.

Here’s the rest of how our day played out in Disneyland...

02/10/2019

Day 5 Part 1 - I’m splitting this day up because this is my second time putting this post together, I’m not sure what happened to the first one - it’s lost in cyberspace.

We’re back in Disneyland for this day to finish off most of what we didn’t cover yesterday. Originally this was going to be a MaxPass day but I decided I wanted to see how we went using the old fashioned FastPass.

Our original plan for the day had us taking a break and heading back into the park for the final run of Spectromagic’s summer stint. However, I think it’s safe to say we aren’t a nighttime spectacular family. We shuffled some things on the go so that we were done by 2pm and then called it a day. I have no idea how people go from open to close repeatedly but hats off to your stamina!

01/10/2019

Here is the promised post about our Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge visit from yesterday. I will preface this by saying that I’m not the hugest Star Wars fan (I still haven’t seen episodes 1-3) but I appreciate great theming, which is part of what I love so much about the Disney parks.

30/09/2019

Day 4 - Disneyland Day! Today we tackled our first of two full planned days in Disneyland Park. LJ continued his ride streak, attempting everything thrown at him today! It was pretty busy, being a weekend day that was expected. Early in the morning is consistently the nicest time to be in the parks crowd wise. Here’s what we got up to today...

29/09/2019

Day 3 and we were excited to finally hit some rides with a jam packed day at California Adventure Park.

If you’ve been following us for awhile you’ll probably be aware that LJ has up until today been reluctant to ride any attraction with a height requirement. I’m happy to report that with the exception of Incredicoaster, all four Magical Mouse family members attempted all the attractions in our itinerary. 🎉

Here’s what we achieved...
