Loving the place where you live inspired a Living Gems Gold Coast resident to capture and express the intensity of his love for the over-50s lifestyle resort in poetry form. Roy has used vivid imagery, rhythm, and feeling in his Ballad of Living Gems Gold Coast to illustrate why he loves it so much.

The Ballad of Living Gems Gold Coast (by Roy McKeen):

I live at Living Gems at the north end of the Coast
And of all the places I have ever lived, I love this place the most
I love its friendly people who greet you with a smile
And say a warm ‘Hello there’ and stop and chat awhile

I love the social functions like Christmas in July
With lots of roasted chicken and scrumptious apple pie
And Mother's Day and Father's Day and sometimes Halloween
And Melbourne Cup and New Year's Eve and others in between

The COOMBAH-BAR is open and does a roaring trade
In beer and wine and rum and Coke and gin and lemonade
The prices here are really cheap as everyone remarks
It’s really only half the price of what you pay at Sharks

Happy Hour on Friday is always lots of fun
So won’t you come and join us, there’s room for everyone
There’s singing round the piano, the atmosphere is great
Just bring yourself and have a drink but don’t forget a plate

Sometimes I go out walking in the quiet of the night
And savour the tranquility with not a soul in sight
Often I hear laughter and the sounds of conversation
Or the sounds of tinkling glass as folk share a slight libation

In summertime the weather’s warm, you can jump into the pool
You’ll find it’s quite refreshing, the water’s nice and cool
And when you do come out you can lie there in the sun
And slowly, slowly get a tan and show off to everyone

I do love Living Gems and I hope you will agree
That we are lucky to live here in peace and security
So come all you Living Gemmers and let us celebrate
And live and love and laugh and sing in this, our Sunshine State

Kindness brings people together! Today is World Kindness Day, an event that began in 1998 to promote kindness throughout the world. Established by the World Kindness Movement, the Day is held “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.” It is also an ideal time to spread a little kindness yourself.
