Sad news coming out of Japan of the death, at 54, of the first overseas Yokozuna in Akebono. I remember living in Japan and watching the struggles he had to finally receive recognition of the top sumo rank in 1993

Akebono, born Chadwick Haheo Rowan in Waimanalo, Hawaii, became the 64th yokozuna in 1993 and gained immense popularity.
