Big Picture Tas Supporting industry in Tasmania Industry is the lifeblood of Tasmania. It is the big picture.

Sustaining and growing industry creates wealth for our state through the creation of direct employment and ensuring local contractors and suppliers have work. The millions of dollars we pay in salaries, wages, government taxes and charges as well as direct investment through community programs and the purchase of goods and services from Tasmanian businesses and suppliers assists major community se

ctors including health, housing, education and tourism. Our vital industries underpin the state’s economy – it is time for Tasmania to see the Big Picture. Industry is the window to the international economy and from humble beginnings many businesses in Tasmania perform in global markets. Our products are taken from Tasmania to the world and it is time for Tasmania to be proud of our Big Picture stories.

Bell Bay Aluminium started its operating life as a joint venture between the Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments. It was Australia's desperate need for aluminium for aircraft production during WW 11 that saw the plan for the country's first aluminium smelter realised in the late 1940's. The smelter's first ingot was poured on 23 September 1955. In 2015 the smelter celebrates 60 years of aluminium production in Tasmania! We invite you to celebrate with us.

Heart attacks: learning the hard way

The Examiner recently interviewed Geoff Baker from Bell Bay Aluminium to highlight how important it is that if you are over 45 years of age you should ask your GP for a heart health check. 1 in 4 Tasmanians currently live with cardiovascular disease meaning Tasmanians have a higher risk of developing the disease more than anywhere else in the country. Many Tasmanians have not experienced a serious health event like a heart attack or stroke but have the risk factors and may not know about it!

GEOFF Baker had his second heart attack just four months ago.

Congratulations to Norske Skog on receiving the Overall Project Award at the Tasmania Engineering Excellence Awards 2014 Gala Dinner in Hobart last night in recognition of the company's $84.8 million project at its Boyer mill, which involved the conversion of one its two newsprint machines to allow for the production of Light Weight Coated (LWC) paper. It now means that glossy paper for catalogues and magazines that was previously imported to Australia, can now be sourced from Tasmania. Judged highly in all categories, the LWC Conversion Project was commended for its complexity and ex*****on, as the mill remained at 100% operation capacity for all but three of the 19 months that it took to complete. The state-of-the-art conversion involved almost 200 Tasmanian firms and $40 million in local expenditure, and was delivered on time and on budget. This is a fine example of engineering excellence by one of Tasmania's major industries that has substantial flow on effects for the Tasmanian economy.
