Camping Life with Autism Kid & Autism Mum

Hi, My name is Diane and my son’s name is Paul. Well, as you can see, WE LOVE CAMPING. Pauli is severally impacted by Autism and Intellectual Impairment, with a side of epilepsy going on in his head. He also can’t talk. He has some words and Makaton signs that he can manage and I mostly understand him. Frustrating for him sometime. One of the best things we could have done for him is to introduce him to the camping life from a baby. When we are out on the road he is in heaven. He loves the long drives and the campfires, socialising with other campers, and sleeping in our Franklin Caravan and exploring all the wonderful places that we go to. Give him the open road any day to regular life in the city.

I decided to start this blog to let other families with Autism know that there is adventure out there for us, and to give them a little insight as to the way we manage the camping and adventures we have with Pauli. Its not all Rainbows and Unicorns, but by far the good days camping far outweigh the bad. We have met soo many wonderful adventurers out there and have made lifelong friends with some of our Campground owners.

As of early 2020 we will be setting out on the road full time as Pauli has finished school and is officially an adult. As we are KIWI’S we do not qualify for NDIS, so no support for Pauli, therefore I have decided to retire - become his full time carer living and working on the road and looking after Pauli. I am looking forward to trying our hand house sitting or farm sitting and staying in caravan parks along the way, as well as free camping, as our caravan is set up for off grid living. So if you need someone to sit for you, just message me and if we are in the area, we would love to help out.

I hope to teach Pauli life skills to manage as an Adult so that he can gain some independence in his adult life, and perhaps earn a small income one day. So, if you see us out there, please come over and say Hi, you won’t miss us and we will be flying the AUTISM flag high - Pauli loves nothing better than having a sit down with new people, and sometimes even takes his chair over to a campfire to join in.
