𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?

One of the greatest advantages of joining a trek or climb isn’t just the obvious health benefits—it’s also the improvement in overall fitness. Having a goal provides extra motivation and dedication to stick to a program, knowing that the effort you put in will pay off in the mountains.

To keep training interesting, I mix various activities, training around five days a week and taking rest days when my body needs them. Preparing for trekking or mountaineering requires a balance of endurance, strength, and flexibility to handle the demands of high-altitude terrain.

Start with cardiovascular exercises such as hiking with a weighted backpack, stair climbing, or your preferred activity—running, cycling, swimming, or walking—to build stamina.

Strength training should emphasise leg power with squats, lunges, and deadlifts. Interval training, using kettlebells, battle ropes, and bodyweight exercises is fantastic for quickly building endurance and strength. If you have access to a weighted sled or can incorporate farmer’s walks, these are also excellent for full-body conditioning.

Core strength is just as crucial. Incorporate abdominal exercises along with upper-body training, focusing on functional movements like overhead presses, push-ups, and pulling exercises.

Mental resilience is key—sometimes, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone is the best way to prepare. Training in challenging weather conditions or taking on long hikes over tough terrain will help develop both confidence and grit.

This climb is ideal for adventurers looking for a challenging yet accessible Himalayan ascent, requiring no prior mountaineering experience.

The trek to Mera Peak Base Camp is considered one of the most stunning in Nepal, taking us through the remote and less-crowded Hinku Valley. Over eight unforgettable days, you’ll experience a mix of accommodations, from cozy teahouses to rugged mountain tents, while traversing pristine alpine forests, remote valleys, and breathtaking glaciers surrounded by stunning mountain views.

Upon reaching Base Camp, you’ll have a day to learn basic mountaineering skills before beginning our 3-4 day ascent. This thrilling climb includes establishing Camp 1 and High Camp before the exhilarating summit push, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of five of the world’s six tallest mountains: Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga.

Before their descent, they took on one final challenge: summiting Kala Patthar (5,545m). According to Dawa Sherpa, the boys once again demonstrated remarkable strength and determination, effortlessly reaching the summit. Their reward was nothing short of spectacular—crystal-clear views of the world’s tallest peak, Mt Everest (8,848m). The photos captured from the summit are awe-inspiring, with the iconic mountain rising majestically against a vivid blue sky.

Dawa Sherpa reflected on the journey with great excitement, highlighting the camaraderie, laughter, and mutual respect that characterised every step of the adventure. The boys have formed lasting bonds—not only with each other but also with Dawa and the local people they encountered along the way. These connections and experiences will undoubtedly remain cherished memories for years to come.

Now back in the warmth and comfort of Kathmandu, the team is preparing for the next leg of their adventure: exploring the serene lakeside city of Pokhara. This peaceful destination is the perfect place to relax and reflect after their trek, offering incredible panoramic views of the Annapurna Himalayan Range, including the towering 8,000m peaks of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu.

Flynn shared his thoughts with me last night, still buzzing from the experience. He admitted feeling a tinge of sadness as they trekked away from Mt Everest—a testament to the profound impact of this journey.

I had the pleasure of speaking with their parents to share the incredible news, and they couldn’t have been prouder of their boys. Overjoyed and emotional, they expressed how impressed they were by Flynn and Josh’s determination and accomplishment.

After capturing some well-earned photos at Base Camp, Dawa Sherpa led the team beyond the prayer flags into the lower reaches of the Khumbu Icefall, where they spent about 30 magical minutes.

Surrounded by stunning ice formations and the soothing sounds of water flowing beneath the glacier, it was a moment they will surely treasure forever.

This achievement didn’t come easy. Flynn and Josh put in the hard yards—taking on part-time jobs to save for the trip, carefully selecting their gear, and committing to a rigorous fitness program to prepare physically and mentally. All that hard work has truly paid off.

As best friends, they chose to forgo the traditional schoolies celebration and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure instead. This incredible journey will undoubtedly strengthen their bond, giving them memories to reminisce about for years to come—a testament to their friendship and adventurous spirit.

As part of their acclimatisation day in Dingboche (4,400m), they tackled the ridge behind the village and ascended to the peak of Nangkartshang (5,083m).

Under the expert guidance of Dawa Sherpa, they spent an unforgettable 45 minutes on the summit, enjoying crystal-clear skies and breathtaking views of iconic peaks, including Makalu (8,485m), Lhotse (8,516m), Cho Oyu (8,201m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), and many more.

Having spent valuable time at high altitude, Flynn and Josh are now well-prepared as they continue their ascent today towards the village of Lobuche (4,900m).

Dawa Sherpa shared that the boys are doing an exceptional job—staying strong, healthy, and highly motivated, knowing that Everest Base Camp is now just a few days away.

Our intrepid young adventurers, led by the incredible Dawa Sherpa, are making remarkable progress on their unforgettable journey to Everest Base Camp. The group has now comfortably reached Dingboche at an impressive altitude of 4,400m.

Flynn and Josh, who graduated from high school less than two weeks ago, chose to celebrate their hard-earned success with an adventure of a lifetime in the Himalayas before beginning the next chapter of their lives at university.

Guiding back-to-back EBC treks, Dawa Sherpa has been highly impressed with the boys’ enthusiasm, resilience, and ability to adapt to the challenges of high-altitude trekking. They’ve been soaking up the breathtaking scenery while putting their camera gear to excellent use, capturing memories they’ll cherish forever.

Remarkably, their oxygen saturation levels have stayed consistently above 90%, their appetites remain as strong as ever, and they’ve been an absolute hit with the warm and welcoming hosts along the trail.

The journey continues, and we’re excited to see what’s next for these young adventurers as they push closer to Everest Base Camp!

The majority of the group safely reached Base Camp, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The journey left everyone with an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment.

The sentiment I kept hearing from the team was: “One of the greatest experiences of my life.”

The group was in the extremely capable hands of Dawa Sherpa and Ang Karma Sherpa, two remarkable guides who usually lead our climbing expeditions. With over 40 summits of 8000m+ mountains between them, their leadership and expertise are unparalleled.

Although I couldn’t join the group this time around, I was able to closely monitor their progress through daily updates from Dawa Sherpa. This allowed me to stay involved in making key decisions and providing advice on logistics, as well as addressing a few medical issues that arose during the trek.

Leadership of this calibre is rare on a trek, and the team had nothing but praise for Dawa and Ang Karma’s guidance, support, and care. A huge thank you to both for setting such a high standard and ensuring the group’s safety and success!

While a few of the team members have already made it home, the rest are relaxing in Kathmandu—enjoying well-deserved pizza, drinks, and even the occasional massage.

Congratulations to Kevin, Nick, Theresa, Dion, and Alyssa for embracing the challenge and experiencing the majestic beauty of the Himalayas.

𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐥𝐮 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞.

Things don’t always go exactly according to plan.

Part 1 (16/09/24)

At the time of first writing this, with no way of getting the information out, Tim, Dawa Sherpa and myself are currently waiting in Camp 1 on Manaslu for an evacuation helicopter.

Our first rotation (14/09/24) started well and we moved along comfortably and made good progress on our ascent.

At around 5500m, only 200 vertical metres from camp 1, Tim’s back started experiencing mild spasms and by the time we reached our camp, had seized up which made it difficult for him to breathe and even walk without suffering extreme pain.

There was no improvement overnight, despite treatment and medication, and our intended walk up towards Camp 2 was placed on hold.

I monitored Tim throughout the day (15/09/24), hoping it was just a temporary set back but his condition was not settling down.

Eventually I had the conversation I had to have, but hate to have with Tim.

Tim is strong, determined and possesses such a positive mindset which I have witnessed in the mountains many times before.

He goes about his business in a measured and calm manner, but he looked at me, his eyes started to well, as did mine and he ultimately made the decision.

I knew in my heart that the journey was over for this year, but I wanted Tim to be part of the process, and he showed incredible courage and a clear sense of reality that any other decision would be fraught with danger.

With no way of continuing up or even descending, a helicopter evacuation was our only option.

Part 2 (17/09/24)

The helicopter finally arrived this morning in Camp 1 (5700m) after having to abandon an earlier attempt yesterday due to bad weather.

A team of Sherpas had prepared a make-shift helipad a few nights ago as we were planning to get Tim out yesterday morning but we had to play the weather waiting game.

Tim is now flying to Kathmandu and will be landing directly at a reputable hospital where he will undergo observations and the required tests. He will also be taken care of by one of our team before he is released and afterwards transferred to our regular hotel.

He is obviously very disappointed as are all of us but deep down, the correct decision has been made.

The support and condolences Tim and I have received from an incredible group of fellow climbers we have met along the journey has been overwhelming and makes you feel special to be part of such a wonderful community.

This injury was totally unforeseen and took us all by surprise. Tim has been training for over 12 months, took time off work to up the ante and clear his mind, only to be sidelined by something so seemingly inconsequential.

Climbing mountains is never guaranteed and we all come into these expeditions knowing the risks, whether it be the weather, the conditions or personal well-being.

As cliched as it is, the mountain will always be here and our first priority is and always will be the safety of our expedition members.

Tim will be deflated for a while but at the same time should be very proud of himself. It is a huge commitment to take on an 8000m climb, he has completely enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back to finish what he started.

For Dawa Sherpa and I, we're chasing Tim down the mountain, descending 2400m as we collect some gear in Base Camp and continue down to the village of Samagaun for the night.

From my conversation with Tim and the medical team in Kathmandu after we reached Base Camp this morning, Tim is being well looked after and resting.

All going to plan, Dawa and I will be back to Kathmandu tomorrow where we will catch up with Tim.

𝐖𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧.

We plan to slowly ascend to Camp 1 (5700m) today and spend 2 nights there before we continue up to Camp 2 (6400m) for a night.

We will then climb up and touch Camp 3 (6700m), return to Camp 2 for another night and then descend back to Base Camp for some much needed rest.

We will need to assess the conditions as we go but the reports from the rope fixing team who have already reached Camp 2 are positive at this stage.

Tim is strong, feeling positive and excited that we are finally on the move.

It is not always easy to be forced to sit still, spending many hours in your tent as you wait for the weather but this is all part of mountaineering.

Posts up high are not always possible but we cannot wait to share once we are safely back down in Base Camp.

It was a beautiful offering, giving the Sherpas and climbers safe passage when they start to make their way up the mountain.

We have had a lot of rain in Base Camp, with regular white-outs and heavy snow fall higher up, slowing our progress at the moment but we have time and now is the time for patience.

We are hoping to start our first rotation in the coming days, planning to spend 4 nights in the upper camps.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐥𝐮 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝟖𝟏𝟔𝟑𝐦) 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲.

We were originally a team of 4 but one of the guys sustained a training injury three weeks out and another, who has been on six trips with us including two previous 8000m climbs, has a minor condition which I considered serious enough for me to not take the risk for his own safety or my Sherpa's.

The good thing is - the mountain will always be here and they will be raring to go next year.

Tim, who has climbed with us on Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America and Mera Peak, now in effect has his own private 8000m expedition with myself and Dawa Sherpa.

Dawa is a highly gifted, technically skilled high altitude Sherpa guide with 22 summits above 8000m, and was a pivotal member of our successful Manaslu climb last year and Everest expedition earlier this year.

So today, after having flown in by helicopter to the small village of Samagaun three days ago and ventured out on a few acclimatisation walks, we are now ready to head up to Manaslu Base Camp (4450m), which involves almost 1000m of reasonably steep ascent.

Tim is nervously excited but champing at the bit and I cannot wait to be back up there.

These two adventurous young men have decided, that instead of going to Schoolies, they would prefer to challenge themselves by trekking to Everest Base Camp to celebrate their high school graduation.

As school finishes up after our programmed dates, we have arranged a personalised trip for both Flynn and Joshua.

I have met up with the boys and their parents and was immediately impressed by their dedication and determination to do something a little different.

This year, we were proud to guide the incredible Prasad family from Canberra, consisting of 5 members including their son Niraj at just 14 years of age.

Niraj’s Mum Ash made the decision to join us, and he was along for the ride, not really knowing what to expect.

By the third day, he was hooked and in complete awe of this majestic landscape and excited for each new day. He showed strength and determination all the way up until we reached the EBC.

To be honest, you could not wipe the smile from his face and he successfully completed the trek, along with his family, like a seasoned veteran.

Age is no barrier and it comes down to the individual trekkers preparation, health, maturity and mindset.

A member of our April EBC trekking team asked me if I could find a remarkable location up on Everest to place some Buddhist prayer flags in memory of her late husband. I have to say, it was a true privilege for Dawa Sherpa and myself to position the flags high on the mountain between an ice formation looking out across Everest, Lhotse and Nupste, with the prayers blowing forever in the Himalayas.
