Amazing day visiting Miyajima Island, a day trip by train and ferry from Hiroshima. This is one of those places you see in photos and add to your bucket list, and we feel so lucky to see it in person! 🙌

With a bit of planning, we were so fortunate to see the O-Torii Gate (Grand Gate) of Itsukushima Shrine at both low and high tides. The O-Torii Gate is one of the largest in Japan, at 16.6m high, 24m wide roof and weighing 60 tonnes ⛩️

Living the carry-on life for the next few weeks. Packing for an overseas trip with such limited space and weight allowance really makes you think about what you’re taking. It’s all about a few key items of clothing that work well together, items that are light weight and that wash and dry overnight.

Sometimes it’s those little token items you collect on your travels that come in the most handy. These mini luggage clips we bought in pop up travel shop in Japan have more than proven their worth over the years.

Whether it’s clipping our backpacks to a suitcase, or clipping our suitcase to a train handle to prevent them moving these little clips are a must take for us!

We spent a couple of days in the beautiful mountainous Hida region in Takayama. We enjoyed strolling the streets of the old town, eating the local specialties and tasting sake. It was -7 when we ventured out to the Morning Market, our coldest morning so far! 🥶 We had a lovely stay at Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama Musubinoyu which was a sanctuary with its lovely onsen and dinner after exploring the town

Another amazing stay Our go-to hotel for premium accommodation in the heart of Shibuya. We love that rooms start from floor 19 so you have sky high views of the city. If you’re lucky enough to get a room facing west, you may see Mt Fuji on a clear day. Of course there are so many options in Tokyo, and we've stayed in many different types depending on budget, time of year, location and who we are travelling with (couples, families). Cerulean Tower ticked all the boxes for us this trip! How we accessed it: Shibuya Station, South Gate or Hachiko Gate

Delicious chicken katsu at Tonkatsu Toyama. It can be very difficult to find chicken katsu in Japan as most places tend to serve tonkatsu (pork). So it was great when we found this gem that served both! Located in Asakusa, it’s also right near the Senso-ji Temple which is also a must-see in Tokyo. Access: Asakusa Station on the Ginza Line

We always enjoy coffee on our trips to Tokyo! With state of the art coffee equipment, high quality coffee beans and a minimalist interior design, it’s easy to see why customers such as ourselves keep coming back. We found the prices are still reasonable (550 yen per coffee) compared to other coffee shops. We highly recommend the Shinjuku and Aoyama stores, but there are many locations throughout Tokyo and Japan to check out

Apple Maps have really come of age. In the past we used to use a few different apps for navigating Tokyo, as well as the JR Lines and Subways. Now Apple Maps does all the work for you, right down to suggesting what train car to board, as well as what the best exit at the station is. I know the Apple haters will probably say something about Google being just as good, but when you’re using the native app on an iPhone, and have the transit card (Suica) added to Apple wallet, maps can even tell you if your card balance is too low for the trip!

Looking for a way to relax and rest your tired muscles after tour flight or walking around Tokyo? A visit to the Toshimaen Niwa No Yu Garden Spa is a relaxing adults-only space away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a wide variety of relaxation facilities including pools and outdoor hot springs overlooking a Japanese garden (swimwear required), a traditional onsen bathhouse (gender segregated), relaxation rooms, sauna, massage chairs and an on-site restaurant. We’ve visited several times now on our trips to Japan and we’re pleased to say it’s maintained it’s high quality and sense of tranquility. Access: Toshimaen station on the Oedo subway line

Get the maximum value out of your frequent flyer points by booking rewards seats in business class! We secured these seats from Brisbane to Tokyo for only $200 each (worth around $8000 each). Our top tip is to pick an airline loyalty program and stick with it. Learn how to earn points with your everyday shopping that can be converted to frequent flyer points on the ground not just in the air. Also once you’ve decided when and where you want to travel, you need to book as soon soon as seats become available as they are usually limited. This can be almost a year in advance. With a bit of planning this could be you enjoying champagne, a three course meal and a luxurious flat bed! We are so grateful for this experience on 🙏

Your phone is such a vital tool when travelling; camera, navigation, notes, e-itineraries, wallet, and staying connected with home. How do we avoid unexpected data charges? We pre-purchase travel eSims from We activate them upon landing and leave the terminal online ready to book that taxi or use the maps to find our hotel, all the while knowing exactly how much we’ve spent on data.

So how do we pack for a month away in two countries, one Winter, one Summer? Firstly for snowboarding, our boards and other snow gear is safely packed away in our High roller board bags, all our other clothes in our checked cases. My carry on bag of choice is the Travel Backpack, Susan’ the Vault, and our jackets tucked away in a packable tote ,

Travelling with a drone isn’t as easy as you think. There are a number of things you need to consider pre-departure. The first thing to check is the local drone laws in the countries you are visiting. For example, as of June 2022, Japan now requires all drones over 100 grams to be registered, display a registration sticker, and be equiped with a remote ID function. Applying for this registration can take a few weeks so planning ahead is vital!
