How many of us just don't know what to do when it comes to lighting? Lights serve 4 key purposes - to illuminate, to set the mood, to define, and to disguise.
1. Illuminate - So you can see. Most of us think along these lines for functionality, and that's great. But if it is limited to just that, it can be quite boring. So....
2. Set the mood. I don't just mean turn on your fluorescent and a warm side table lamp, and say that's it. No.... feel free to add several warm accent lights so you don't need to turn the functional light on! I know, you may be concerned about power consumption, but there are many cost efficient light bulbs available now, so you have no excuse!
3. To define. Wherever you have a spot of lighting, it accents that space, whether it is a spot light, a side lamp, or track lighting above an art piece. Be creative and use small desk lamps to highlight novel collectables from overseas or even a stack of books sitting on your mantlepiece or side table!
4. To disguise. Perfect if you have last minute guests coming for dinner! Turn the strategically placed lights on and where your mess is, turn the lights off.
Bottom line is, don't restrict just to your ceiling lights or down lights even if they are dimmable. They do not add depth or height. Always ensure you have at least one corner night (like a standing or overhanging light) and one accent light in every room/space (desk lamp, side or table lamp), plus candles! That's a trick to creating warmth and drama to your space! Also, try different combos every night. See how your space can look with just one or a couple of the lights on. You'll be amazed with the effect it can have! #Lightupmylife #lightingdesign #Illumination 😎
