Remember when there were telegram boys to deliver telegrams on their red bicycles throughout the city, suburbs and regional or country towns.
These days the younger generation might be hard pressed to even tell you what a telegram was - a message sent by telegraphic cable. They were quite expensive too, charged by the word and were originally sent and received by trained Morse code operators later replaced by teleprinter machines.
Because of the expense, telegrams were only used in emergencies and quite often meant bad news. They were also a popular means of conveying best wishes to a bride and groom on their wedding day. Do you remember receiving a telegram?

Who remembers getting literally hundreds of Christmas cards delivered by the postie at this time of year? I worked as a postman for a couple of years after leaving school and this was the busiest time. It was frantic!
Every year at this time the PMG (pre Aust Post) would hire hundreds of secondary school students all around the country to help with the Christmas card rush, generally about 2 weeks before Christmas day.
There could be up to 3 and 4 deliveries a day to keep up with the influx of cards. Had to blow the whistle every time we put a card or letter in the letterbox to let the house holder know they had mail! Photo from the NAA.
