Over the last week, Ancient Land Tours assisted scientists from the Australian Museum find tiny snails called punctids ... so small they look like dots. The Nullarbor was at its best after the recent rains.

The Nullarbor harbours so many secrets ...

Most of us see only the dry treeless plain and spectacular sea cliffs. But beneath the surface there’s a precious world of caves and unique species that could be lost without better protection.

Steve Milner from Ancient Land Tours was co-author of this paper on Nullarbor blind spiders.

Previously described from only fragments of exoskeleton and juvenile specimens, the cave spider genus Troglodiplura (Araneae: Anamidae), endemic to the Nullarbor Plain, is the only troglomorphic member of the infraorder Mygalomorphae recorded from Australia. We investigated the distribution of Trogl...

A fabulous Nullarbor photo by Stefan Eberhard.

For most people, the Nullarbor Plain means two long days in the car, barrelling along a dead-straight highway across the flat, featureless landscape: two days of Nullarboredom.

Venture off the highway, though, onto the tracks that criss-cross the hinterland, and you’ll find amazing things. Take it from Stefan Eberhard and his wife Bronwen, who recently spent nine weeks exploring the Nullarbor’s roads less travelled. Eberhard, a scientist from Hobart, first came here as a young man in 1983 and has since been back 20 times.

The plain is is a giant limestone karst formation, an ancient seabed that was uplifted and then honeycombed under the surface by tens of millions of years of seeping rain.

This image was shot in a cave mouth that leads to a maze of tunnels extending for 35km underground near Forrest. Eberhard set the camera up just inside the cave, and stood on the lip of the cave mouth with the Milky Way behind him.

“Sometimes these little holes blow hard enough to whip the hat off your head,” says Eberhard, amazed.

“It’s like the whole landscape is breathing.”

The Far West of SA really delivers with unexpected whale sightings on an incredible remote coastline. Also seen were a multitude of animal tracks in the sand including echidna, hopping mouse, sand dunnarts, kangaroo, wombat, lizards, skinks and snakes. Birds included kestrels, banded stilt, and sea eagles.

"This tour is not to be missed if passing through Ceduna." - Ingrid and Dietmar from Perth.

Steve Milner from Ancient Land Tours, a speleologist and expert in cave conservation, is thrilled to be involved in this important Australian Heritage project.

Earth Day is an important opportunity for us all to reflect on how vulnerable our precious planet is and consider how we can each play a part to help protect it.

Caves are the most fragile terrestrial ecosystems on Earth and are inherently sensitive to human impact, particularly climate change. They’re home to unique habitats and biodiversity, including cave-adapted animals that evolved in total darkness. Calcite cave formations grow over millennia, faithfully recording regional climate with every drop of water. Fossil deposits form when sediments and animal bones accumulate through roof openings. The World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves exemplifies these natural values.

Current research by scientists at The University of Adelaide and SA Museum aims to document the Cave’s natural values for better management of this globally significant place, and assess how it will continue to be impacted by future climate change.

Nitraria billardierei is a large shrub up to 3m in height. Also known as Nitre Bush, its fruit is favoured by birds, including emus, and other animals such as kangaroos. It's a good bush food, sweet and slightly salty, and can be made into a delicious jam, too!

Our Story

Ancient Land Tours offers small groups the chance to get off the beaten track into an area of outstanding natural beauty; our immersive tours provide a genuine remote experience. We specialise in catering for family and friendship groups.

We offer half-day and full day tours into the Warna Manda Coastal Parks of the Far West of South Australia. Warna meaning ‘sea’, and Manda meaning ‘ground’ or ‘sand’ in the Wirangu Language.

We will drive in a 4WD out of Ceduna and go off the beaten track to the iconic coastline where we will visit remote beaches, bays, and dunes, and witness nature at its best. We will stop for short walks close to the vehicle, to observe nature, including birds, animals, and reptiles (and possibly whales in season). The Far West is one of the last places in South Australia to open up to tourism.

Feel the spirit of this ancient land.
