Last weekend saw the Whitsunday Great Barrier Festival as people lined the streets to watch the many floats go by.
Whitsunday Conservation Council had a float reminding everyone how much we have to care for our reef with El Niño bringing hot and dry conditions.

What does a humpback whale sound like? And what are they talking about? Yesterday Grant and I and our Milady skipper Simon spent a day out on Whitsunday’s newest vessel Viper learning all about whale songs as part of the Whales of the Whitsundays bid to reach accreditation as a Whale Heritage site for the World Cetacean Alliance. It was a training day for crew. We are going to buy a hydrophone which records their songs underwater for both of our boats - Milady and Providence so we can listen live to whales singing. Now that’s got to be worth listening to. What’s more the songs will be then sent to the University of Queensland who have been mainly listening to whales around Stradbroke Island so we can add to their collection and help us understand more about what they may be saying. Genevieve who is doing her PhD on socialisation of humpbacks explained how to interpret the songs.

Our Story

Providence V is a 62-foot gaff rigged schooner which runs daily trips to the iconic world famous Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet and then snorkeling at one of the Whitsunday’s fringing reefs. We serve morning tea and lunch on board and we always love it when people join in to hoist a sail or two. Her deck is perfect to chill on too as we head back across Whitsunday Passage with an afternoon fruit platter . Providence V starred in a Hollywood movie in 1992 called Survive the Savage Seas. She is a replica of the first boats to sail in the America's Cup in the 1870s. Her Australian builder sailed all the way to America to find his dream 'schooner' he wanted to build in the 1980s. He landed in Florida and travelled all the way to Maine until he found the Blackfish, an American bluenose built in 1925. He tracked down the plans in the Mystic River Museum at Connecticut and was told he was only allowed to build one boat. So we know our lady is unique. He took the plans back to Mourilyn halfway from Townsville to Cairns and used timber from the last of the Tully rainforest. No wonder the Hollywood scout was impressed when he spotted her from the air in the early '90s.

Providence V has been in our family for 12 years and all of our five kids have learned to sail on her. You may meet one of them on board.
