Did you know? Early explorers laid claim to parts of Antarctica for their countries as they discovered them in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Colossal glaciers that are actually rivers of ice up to 4 kilometres thick, sea ice from the thin, newly formed "nilas" to the thick and weathered "multi-year ice", and ice shelves - impressive floating platforms of ice that reach the sea.

Did you know Antarctica also has glaciers buried underground? These "subglacial lakes" hold massive amounts of freshwater, adding another layer to the continent's icy wonders.
