Capitalising on the heavy flow of pedestrian traffic caused by a local Sunday flea market, Bearpit Karaoke is a very successful Berlin based adaptive reuse story.

It started in 2009 when Irish expat Joe Hatchiban brought along a portable, battery-powered karaoke machine to the stone amphitheatre in Berlin’s ‘Mauerpark’. Every Sunday between Spring and Autumn, the amphitheater is transformed into a very public karaoke arena. Volunteers and karaoke enthusiasts take to the stage and are generally met with rapturous applause from the hordes of up 2,000 market goers caught up in the buzz. Six years on, the event has become a Berlin cultural institution.

Ironically, this cultural hub/ greenspace was formerly the heavily guarded “Death Strip” where East Berliners were discouraged from trying to emigrate or defect to West Berlin via this section of the Berlin Wall – hence the name Mauerpark (‘Wall Park’).

Karaoke in a park. Such a simple concept. To think of the opportunities in Sydney….

This shot was taken by back in 2010. Good to see it is still going strong. Check out the page here: http://www.bearpitkaraoke.com/.
