In a remote village, closest to Tibet we were privileged to witness a religious ceremony only performed every 10 years. We witnessed the procession of Lakshmi to the abode of her husnand Vishnu at Badhrinat some distance away. Perfect timing!

JAPAN: JOURNEY TO JAPAN - MOMIJIGARI

1 November to 22 November 2024

Japan is a nation uniquely in touch with its past. At ancient shrines and in the heart of historic cities, its rich cultural heritage lives on as something not just to be admired from afar, but actively appreciated. From the transformative travel experience of participating in yamabushi— the mountain ascetic tradition—to hands-on practise at a seat of esoteric Buddhism, take in the spirit of Japan and its people with all five senses. Japan may be a small group of islands, but it is home to striking scenery and diverse landscapes. Volcanoes rise from the sea, crater lakes reflect the emerald green of ancient forests, rugged mountains stretch across two-thirds of the country, and stunning Zen gardens paint the country as bold and beautiful as a work of art.

Zen Oriental Journeys appoints tour managers and leaders who have significant experience in management at senior education department levels and are experienced in professional tour leadership. Journey to Japan will be led from Australia by Pamela Stuart. Pamela has a Master of Education (Studies of Asia) Degree and has worked in the Asia literacy field for more than 30 years as the WA Asia Education Foundation State Advisor, the AEF’s Australian Curriculum Strategy Manager, and as a writer of Asia-focussed digital resources. In these roles, Pamela has led a wide range of study tours to India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and China. She has led a number of Zen Oriental Journeys’ programs including our recent Momijigari: Journey to Japan. She is recently retired as Principal Consultant, Curriculum Support, for the Department of Education WA.

Testimonial from our Journey to Japan in Nov 2023

"Thanks again for organising such a superb tour of Japan. It will be fondly remembered for a long time. I've got to admit that it was nothing like what I expected and far exceeded my expectations. Such a great balance of heritage sites, markets, food, people, locations, free time and experiences. I can't think of too much to change and am very grateful to you for encouraging me to go and also for your support and assistance throughout the trip."

We have now launched Mustang: Journey to Lo Mantang, The Forbidden Kingdom, for October 2025. It’s on the web so do have a look as interest is high and a number of Bookings have now been received.

I am still collating some prices for the November 2024 Momijigari, Journey to Japan. As this is a handcrafted tour, (I do not simply offer a mass produced product which is easily available), I need to source special hotels and experiences, meals and admissions to certain galleries, houses and gardens. These are taking time, but the program without prices is on the web and interest is very high.

I am thrilled to attach the first draft of a new tour Spirit of the South; A Journey to India. This is only the first iteration and more will follow, but as our Journeys to India for 2024 sold out within a few days of release, I thought to give you advance notice. It’s for February 2025 and I am establishing an advance notice email list for this one too.

There will also be an art and craft oriented Journey to India in January 2025 encompassing the rich regions of Gujerat and highlights of Rajasthan. I have established an advance notice email list for this one as well, but it will be a while yet as its well off the tourist track.

Enjoy the public holiday and browse these trips at: http://www.zenorientaljourneys.com.au

NEW JOURNEY

Upper Mustang: Journey to Lo Manthang

1 October to 18 October 2025

With its rugged mountain terrain and rich cultural legacy, the remote Mustang region is one of the Himalaya’s finest treasures. Set on the border of Nepal and Tibet, between the Annapurna range and the Tibetan Plateau, the landscape here is striking and otherworldly-a semi-arid desert of deep ravines, rocky cliffs, and narrow valleys, flanked by high mountain passes and majestic snowy peaks.

Although politically part of Nepal, Mustang’s geographic isolation has meant that its ancient Tibetan culture, religion and language have been preserved remarkably well. Prayer flags, simple monasteries and impressive chortens dot the unique landscape and Tibetan Buddhist culture still thrives in the whitewashed settlements and cliff-side villages of this former Himalayan kingdom.

Prepare to be awestruck by breathtaking landscapes and meet the people of one of the world’s most culturally preserved regions.

Zen Oriental Journeys appoints tour managers and leaders who have significant experience in management at senior education department levels and are experienced in professional tour leadership. Upper Mustang: Journey to Lo Manthang will be personally escorted and managed by Lee Grafton.

29 May to 5 June 2023

Discover one of Australia's most intriguing destinations with an eight-day tour of Norfolk Island, a reef-fringed paradise whose idyllic landscapes belie a tumultuous history. Just a 2.5-hour flight from Sydney, the country's best-kept secret is home to World Heritage-listed convict buildings, dramatic seascapes, glorious crescents of golden sand, warm island hospitality, and some of the most fascinating chapters of South Pacific history. The island’s unique language – a curious mix of English and Tahitian – owes its origin to the descendants of Bounty mutineers from Pitcairn Island, who arrived on the island in 1856 following the end of its incarnation as a British penal colony. The culture and heritage that abounds from that time is still clear, with the capital, Kingston, home to an array of museums housing significant artefacts and archaeological finds. Norfolk Island is renowned for its beauty, with sparkling seas and a picturesque landscape, a South Pacific paradise also boasting tropical waters and lush national parks, it is no wonder you’ll wish you’d journeyed to Norfolk Island years ago.
