Four hundred years ago, in the fall of 1621, sachem Massasoit and ninety Pokanoket men shared a three-day harvest festival with fifty-two Pilgrims who had survived their harsh first winter in New England. It was a celebration of Plymouth Colony's successful first harvest, a deeply human expression of gratitude, and a sign of communities reaching toward one another in peace and allegiance. Mayflower passenger Edward Winslow said the feast was declared that they could "after a more special manner rejoice together". A handful of Native men who could speak English served as translators, yet differences in language did not keep the Pokanoket and Pilgrims from feasting together, playing games, and demonstrating their military strength.

Centuries later, this remarkable harvest festival still resonates with Americans. Each year, on the fourth Thursday in November, Americans honor the national feast that started at Patuxet/Plymouth by gathering together to share a meal and say what we give thanks for. On this 400th anniversary of Thanksgiving we wish you a day filled with family and friends, feasting, and many blessings.

Stand among giants in one of the most magical places on America’s western shore. Sequoia National Park’s spectacular trees can tower upwards of 200 feet, and there are over 800 miles of hiking trails to explore. Sometimes, you need to lose yourself in nature to find yourself. Happy exploring!

Did you know that Crater Lake is not actually in a crater?

A volcanic crater is formed from the outward explosion of a volcano, there are also such things as impact craters, like where meteors hit the earth, but Crater Lake is in neither. Crater Lake actually sits in a caldera and calderas are formed when a volcano collapses inward.

There is a crater in Crater Lake however, it is called the "Witches Cauldron," and it is on top of Wizard Island!

[Photo depicts Crater Lake with Wizard Island centered on a summer day, there are low hanging puffy clouds over the caldera, but the majority of the sky is blue.]
