It’s nearly Springtime or is it Djilba?

The Canola fields are in full flower and yes we have had a couple of nice sunny days but it’s still cold in the mornings with some rain, not quite Winter and yet not quite Spring.

Recently, I have learnt that in Noongar culture their calendar has six distinctly different seasons Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang.

These seasons are not tied just to the weather but also related to other events such as the flowering of plants and or the behaviour of the animals in a local region. The Noongar seasons can be long or short depending on the what is happening and the ever-changing conditions around us. Only having four seasons and these being determined by a specific date is something I have always found somewhat simplistic and possibly naive.

I guess no matter what seasonal calendar we choose to adopt I am sure I wouldn’t be able to buy a jumper in winter, thanks to our friends in the fashion industry and their secret calendar system.

Minyirr - Gantheaume Point is on the tip of Dampier Peninsula. Here the red sands of the Australian desert flow directly into the clear turquoise blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

Riddell Beach is tucked away on the southern side of the point easily missed unless you have a 4wd and some directions from a local.

Wind and waves over the eons have sculptured the sandstone cliffs into a fantastic prehistoric landscape. At sunset the rocks seem to glow from within contrasting starkly with the long strange shadows thrown.

What a gorgeous day for the first day of winter in Tasmania. It was just perfect for a leisurely drive along the north coastal road from Devonport to Burnie. Make sure you stop and enjoy the view from the small town of Penguin and of course get the mandatory photo with the giant penguin in the Main Street.

Happy Mother’s Day! I have to wonder what this Cuban mother was thinking whilst watching the world go by from her Havana balcony. Hair in rollers surrounded by her worldly goods that won’t fit in her tiny apartment. Or, was she avoiding the sweltering heat trying to capture the slightest cool breeze. I miss our travels, our adventures but right now we’re where we need to be, together, right here, right now.

After spending 9 months across America we did take away a few things with us.

However due to the half a time zone difference we now have it’s not quite the same watching the NFL with a cup of tea at 8am Monday morning.

I will say that the college football is much more exciting to watch.

It was a foggy wet day when we walked the Brooklyn Bridge. It was if a vintage filter had been applied to the day. If it wasn't for the constant traffic noise rushing beneath our feet it would be easy to image a bygone era and the hear the past echos of horses hooves and creaking carts passing by.

The Whaleback Lighthouse sits just offshore at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. It was built in 1830 to protect the lobster men and fishermen of Portsmouth, New Hampershire.

Due to it exposed position and poor construction it has had to be rebuilt several times. At one point the fog horn volume had to be reduced as it was so loud that it was causing structural damage.

This is a blog of I published 3 years ago, but I thought might be good for re-blogging today.   Okay, I’m going to confess, holidays are not my thing. Of course its nice getting to take …

It doesn’t take too much imagination to picture a bygone era in which a horse drawn carriage is carrying a Georgian Belle down this Savannah Street. Majestic Southern Live Oak trees line each side arching over to form a living, green canopy high above. Spanish moss hangs down from the branches waving in the sultry late afternoon breeze not unlike grandpa’s wispy grey beard.

The eligible beauty wearing a layered flowing white dress, head back laughing at something someone had called out. One elegant gloved hand holding the reins and the other clutching at her oversized hat which is threatening to blow away in the breeze.

An interesting fact is, that Spanish Moss is neither from Spain nor is it a moss and is instead is a flowering plant in the family of bromeliads. Being an epiphyte it absorbs nutrients and water through its leaves from the air and rainfall. It generally grows upon larger trees in tropical and subtropical climates, native to much of Mexico, Bermuda, The Bahamas, Central America, South America, southern United States, and the West Indies.

For me Spanish Moss is an unusual plant and one that only grows only in specific locations making it intriguing and slightly mysterious and worthy of a little research and consideration.

Vermont has been truly special at this time of the year with the trees changing colour by the day and the little towns with so much character you want to spend the day exploring all their nooks and crannies. Glorious!
