An incredible insight as I continue to show what is the real daily work of biodynamic winemakers in Champagne. With such a climate: Their convictions, beliefs, willpower, respect, is becoming a luxury. < There are battles fought in which few people perceive meaning or usefulness, except those who fight them together in anonymity. Why are they being led? The question we didn’t ask ourselves this morning at 8:00 am when Etienne, Stéphane, Arnaud left for this long day, of noise, rage, rain, mud, very passing lightness and fatigue.

And yet we did it, without hesitation. We did it because we chose to lead a field in bio and biodynamics. And when since November 2023 it hasn’t been a week without rain, you can imagine a mushroom relishing the excess moisture on the vine: mildiou. And in bio, no miracle product, only copper with small repeated doses allows to limit the development of the pathogen. 10 mm of rain and to start the copper spraying again. But what to do when it rains every day with daily accumulations of around 20 or 30 mm? No choice, caterpillars allow to enter the vines when a tractor would risk getting stuck on the first wheel turns despite the grass we leave between the rows.

So yes, the vineyard suffers from these mildew attacks, men and women suffer from having to do this aggravating work of all days to protect a plant “with bows and arrows and not nuclear weapons”.
