A lovely albeit very humid day visiting Sentosa Island. A great place for family and fun, you can still enjoy the place without putting your hand in your pocket to much.

Located right next to the Paro-Thimphu highway and only a five-minute drive away from the Paro International Airport is a cafe set in what was a previously abandoned ruin.

After restoration, the traditional Bhutanese mud-rammed building has become a landmark that can be seen from afar and its unpainted exterior emanates a rustic character to the entire place.

The 3-story heritage complex, now known as Neyphug Heritage, is a part of the Neyphug Monastery and was the former residence of His Eminence the Neyphug Trulku Rinpoche.

Making up a large part of the overhauled building is a cafe called Your Cafe – the only eatery in Paro which is fully vegetarian and has adopted a farm-to-table concept.

Whatever the cafe can produce, all proceeds go to the sustainability and funding of Neyphug Monastery, its sangha, and other employees. Since Neyphug Monastery is a privately owned monastery it does not receive any subsidy from the government or any other entities.

The charm of the project lies in the fact that everything that has been used to restore the building came from the main temple at Neyphug monastery which was destroyed by an earthquake in 2011.

Everything is recycled with minimum usage of new timber, and no cement was used, much like the traditional Bhutanese architecture.

I have also included a image of the before and after.

Tachogang or Tachog Lhakhang meaning the ‘Temple of the Hill of the Excellent Horse’ was built by the legendary Great Iron Bridge Builder, Thangtong Gyalpo (1385-1464).

Legend has it that one-day Thangtong Gyalpo was meditating at the very same spot when he had a vision of the spiritual horse, Balaha, an emanation of Chenrezig Avalokiteshvara, which inspired him to build a temple.

Thus the temple was named Tachogang Lhakhang – “Temple of the Excellent Horse”

Thangtong Gyalpo was a wonder-working saint and engineer who is believed to be the first to use heavy iron chains in the construction of suspension bridges.

He built numerous iron bridges and temples across Bhutan and Tibet in the 15 century, some of which are still in use today.

It is said that the iron bridges built by Thangtong Gyalpo have heavily influenced the suspension bridges constructed in Europe and Asia

We were so blessed to have stayed at our close friends hotel (Kuenphen Rabten Resort) in Thimphu.

The front of house staff at Reception and in the Restaurant are so welcoming and really make you feel like family.

I will miss them and will return on my next trip to Bhutan.

Thank you Chencho Tshering, you have created a special place for guests to stay in Thimphu.

If you're planning a trip to Bhutan, I highly recommend this hotel http://www.kuenphenrabtenresort.com/.

I have a special place in my heart for Miss Prabati who was so sweet 🥰, she is the little lady to my left in the photo.

First tasting of ground apple (Yacón). It is early on the season and the colors of this root tuba will mature to a light orange.

This is the Yacón plant, it grows in highland areas and originated from the Andes.

Könchogsym Lhakhang in Bumthang central Bhutan.

The temple was founded, according to the saint Pema Lingpa as far back as the 8th century and in 1039, Bonpo Dragtshel, a tertön, discovered texts which had been buried by Padmasambhava in this location.

According to legend, the king of the water deities was said to have risen out of the lake beneath the temple and offered Dragtshel a stone pillar and scroll.

This concept of a lake beneath the monastery is also reiterated in another legend in which Pema Lingpa is said to have discovered the subterranean lake and concealed the entrance to it with a stone, which stands today in the courtyard of the monastery.

In February 2010 Könchogsum Lhakhang was severely damaged by fire and has since been rebuilt. The new temple and monastery was consecrated in November 2014.

A very beautiful temple with a wonderful story to tell.

Just a few photos from our activities today. We started at Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake), it is not a lake but a deep rock pool on the Tang River.

It is a beautiful and serene place to take a moment and just be in the present.

We then made a very bumpy drive to Ogyen Choling Heritage House and Museum, providing a deep insight into the more traditional aspects of Bhutan's historical past.

We broke for lunch beside the Tang River then made the drive back to our accommodation in Jakar. Tonight we had to Jambay Lhakhang Festival for an evening of dance and rituals and enjoyment.

Just a few of the many jobs to do on the family farm. Passang Lhamo not only runs a farm, she has 3 children and many family she cares for on her own, although the community all helps each other with some of the bigger tasks.

Passang is also officially registered to host farm stay experiences for guest locally and internationally.

This morning I went with Sangay and family to Gasa Town and visited the Gasa Dzong and a place where Holy Water flows nearby.

We also enjoyed lunch with another sister-in-law at her small restaurant in the town.
