There was a few cries of “It’s too big, I can’t wind it in!” But Barbara eventually landed this very healthy barra. Not bad for just her second ever barra and at 97cm she almost joined the prestigious metre club. Maybe next time…

South coast way of life put at risk...from Friday's The West Australian

No it doesn't!

No it doesn't!

WA's fishing charter business operators have just been dealt a harsh blow that puts their businesses on the line and will severely limit opportunities for people with no boats or small boats to fish safely for demersals on board their vessels 😠

As part of fishery changes, the 99 charter fishing licence holders in the West Coast Bioregion (between Kalbarri and Augusta) learnt how many tags they were each going to get (one tag per demersal fish) from DPIRD and, therefore, the total amount of demersal fish customers can catch on their boat each year from 1 July.

In a bitter blow, 78 of 99 licence holders have been told they will receive ZERO tags, destroying the value of their licence. This means that in less than four weeks, charter business owners like Al Bevan from Shikari Charters – who has given back to the community in sustainable fishing, research and service for decades – is staring down the barrel with recreational fishers aboard his vessel no longer able to fish for iconic demersal fish in the West Coast Bioregion ❌

For the 21 licence holders who did receive tags, they are looking at a 70% reduction in their allowable catch, a significantly bigger cut than the 59% recreational fishers and the 12% commercial fishers must cut their demersal catches by.

Each year, 72,000 members of the WA community go on charter fishing trips, helping the sector employ 831 people while generating $110 million in economic activity. The west coast demersal fish are the lifeblood of charter fishing in the west coast bioregion. Yet, there has never been an explanation as to why 6,000 demersal tags is an appropriate amount for a sector that generates such significant social and economic value.

Following the west coast demersal commercial voluntary licence buy-back that opened this week, Recfishwest is calling for the Government to delay the charter tag scheme for six months until we see how much more fish may be allocated to the charter and recreational sectors rather than destroying dozens of family businesses.

Our Story

Ultimate Adventures was established June 1988 when the area was under quarantine for a nasty agricultural w**d, noogoorah burr. Greg has been fishing for wild barramundi on the Lower Ord River in the East Kimberley since 1979. Today safaris depart from Hairy Dog's Fishing Camp set up bush-style on the historic Bend of the Ord. The Ord River is a unique river system home to the famous sportfish, the wild barramundi, lots of birdlife, tropical wildlife and crocodiles. The Ord is a long meandering river which once was made up of a series of billabongs for most years and which relied on big Wet Seasons for a good flow. Nowadays, since the building of the Kununurra Diversion Dam 1962 and the Argyle Ord River Dam 1972, the river now has a continuous flow. Fresh water pushes down against the tide and the barramundi love to travel, so they have made the Ord River home from the Wyndham gulf all the way to the Diversion Dam gates. They co-habitat with other river species - Western Sooty Grunter, small tarpon, various catfish, Archer fish, Shark, on rare occasions, stingrays, mangrove jack, sawfish - a large population of saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, tropical wildlife and lots of birdlife. Fisher people enjoy getting hooked on the barramundi and nature-lovers enjoy the surrounds. Experienced guides will get you hooked! Bush bed and breakfast and unpowered camping grounds are available at Hairy Dog’s Fishing Camp. The best times to fish for barramundi are the hotter months - late March, April, May to early June and then again in late August, September, October. The best of East Kimberley weather can be enjoyed from May to early August.
