I am not usually particularly enamoured of sculpture because of its apparent immutability, which I find stifling due to my personality structure.
However I was drawn 👀 to this one in bronze at Meknes because of the hole in its centre, where the heart ❤️ is intended to be and because of the interesting shadow 👤that it cast. Light 🪔 and shadow and their interconnection has always intrigued.
I believe the arabic inscription indicates this is a famous jewish thinker from a long time ago but online there are references to him being a water carrier. I don't believe this is correct. I am sure that would know.
Meknes, one of Morocco's 4 designated imperial 👑 cities, is undergoing a lot of restoration at this time and much is under sheeting, including the famous gate that Delacroix painted in 1832, with the Sultan astride his black stallion in the foreground.
