The Flinders Ranges Tag-a-Long concluded after a couple of days in Clare and then to our final stop at Melrose nestled at the foot of Mt Remarkable.
The day tour of Clare took in the local history of the area, Pikes Winery for lunch, historic Martindale Hall and Sevenhill Cellars, the original winery in the Clare Valley, with vines planted in 1851. Sevenhill showcases the significant heritage and history of the Jesuits in the development of the colony.
Martindale Hall built of local sandstone in 1879/80 in the Georgian style is awe inspiring for it's grandeur and beauty. It has been used in many movies notably Picnic At Hanging Rock.
A huge thank you to the wonderful group who made up this safari and it's success.
Safe onward travels to you all and we look forward to catching up again.

The Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies deserve a post of their own.
This colony venture into Arkaroola most days. They get a small sample of pellets but are not dependent upon this food. Their colony is approximately two kilometres away..
One joey was rescued after being attacked by their main predator, eagles. He was hand reared for 5 months and pushed back into the wild at 7 months.
After many months went by he came back and looked through the window showing off some of his mates.
The trend continues to this day.

The Flinders Tag-a-Long aired down and ventured to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary on the dirt. Despite some trepidation the road was being graded and for the most part excellent going.
In 1968 the Sprigg family acquired the lease of the Arkaroola sheep station. It was infested with feral animals and heavily overgrazed. The intention was to protect the region's geology and ecology.
The efforts were rewarded in 2012 when the SA parliament penned the Arkaroola Protection Act to protect it from any further mining.
Around 100 geologists from around the world come to Arkaroola each year to study it's unique landscape.
There have been approximately 50 PHd's done on the Arkaroola Conservation area.
The flora consists of River Red gums, Cypress pines, Mulga, Coolibah. Spfinex is also plentiful. Grass trees are found majestically sitting atop granite outcrops. Native orange trees with fruit tasting like passionfruit can be found as well as native limes.
Arkaroola is noted for it's Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby colonies. Numbers are estimated at 3000/4000 and have been as high as 8000 pre millennium drought. Euros and Red Kangaroo are also plentiful.
Arkaroola is only the second Dark Sky Sanctuary in Australia having some of the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere free from atmospheric light pollution and runs three different astronomy experiences for guests. The first Sanctuary being Warrunbungle NP near Coonabarabran.
Arkaroola boasts many walking tracks and the Ridge Top Tour to Sillers Lookout is a world class attraction.
As Arnie said "l'll be back".

From Cradock the Flinders Tag-a-Long travelled to Wilpena Pound. Cast your mind back a mere 500 million years and the area that is the Flinders Ranges consisted of sedimentary rock layers on the sea floor. The buckling/folding that took place back then formed Wilpena Pound and surrounds. The group took a 4wd tour into the Bunyeroo, Brachina gorges where the buckling has tilted the earth's layers almost vertical. Fault lines in the earth's crust are clearly visible here and monitored by seismograph in Hawker recording minute and significant movements as far as the Asia/Pacific region.
What is now considered by geologists and palaeontologists world wide as the most significant event in geological history and life on earth is recorded in a level of rock within the Flinders Ranges referred to as the Edicara Biota, revealing the first multicellular animals (metazoans) on the planet.
The late Dr Reg Sprigg AO, has been credited with making this amazing discovery in the Ediacara Hills West of Beltana in 1946.
Guess where we are headed to next, none other than Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, acquired by the Sprigg family in 1968.
To say this is a special place is an understatement.

The 2024 Flinders Ranges Xpedition Tag-a-Long commenced in Cradock, which was settled in the late 1800s. With high hopes, farmers settled on land north of the Goyder Line in the belief that the rain would follow the plough. As is the case, mother nature had the final say.
Participants are in for an absolute treat as we traverse one of the most significant geological wonders of Australia.

Catching up on the last few days of safari, we spent 3 nights on the western part of the island with free time to explore Flinders Chase NP and we had a very informative and interesting guided walk through Hanson Bay Wildlife. We travelled on to Seal Bay with a Ranger guided walk down to the Sea Lions on the beach, no fear of not seeing a Seal Lion here!

Leaving Pennishaw we stopped at Prospect Hill Lookout with a fair few of the group braving the 500 steps to the top for the amazing view, the highest point on the island. From there we went to Emu Ridge Distillery for a very informative tour and lunch.
