Many Aussies [ and others!] are fine tuning their itineraries for an upcoming Summer holiday in lovely Lanka. We usually have about two weeks so hard choices have to be made on what to miss out - this time. Here's an easy, time friendly and awesome ancient site that could compensate if you have missed Gal Viharaya at Polonnaruwa. Buduruwagala Maha Viharaya. You can drop in as you head down to Yala and the South Coast from Ella or do it as a day trip from Ella. It's set in a beautiful, treed, serene parkland and the last time I was there had a cafe making it a perfect rest stop. Predating Gal Viharaya by a couple of centuries and in the Mahayana Buddhist School which then existed with the present day Theravada School, the standing Buddha is the tallest such statue in Sri Lanka. I'm looking forward to enjoying this beautiful site in January. See you there!
