In 1909, James Barnes gifted to the Empty Stocking Appeal a parcel of boots he made to “kindly use your judgment as to how they are disposed of.”

Due to a cancellation, Madiba Apartment is available. It's bright and spacious, with a big comfy couch that looks out toward the monkeys across the road at City Park.

HELP PLEASE!

We are the custodians of the two end buildings in Tamar Street Launceston, the townhouse and what used to be the two story shop and boot factory (mid last century) beside.

The two properties used to be the home and workshop of James Barnes the bootmaker who was a keen supporter of the Empty Stocking Appeal. Prior to that the townhouse was built and owned by Jacob Turner and his wife Jane who was also on the committee to build the Methodist Church in Frederick Street (now part of City Mission buildings).

They were split titles and owners since the 70s we believe, and while still two titles, they’re now back with one single owner (us).

We have spent the last 8 years restoring the townhouse including sandblasting wrought iron, replacing gables and repointing (some still to do), as well as waterproofing, safety compliance and major renovations in both buildings on the inside. The workshop building has had two apartments built inside.

The last major part is the facade of the ‘workshop’. It was given the big glass ‘shop front’ and the box awning (that trucks and motorhomes keep hitting), but we want to restore this facade in line with heritage and allow it to tell the story of Mr Barnes, his disagreements with Mr Blundstone (the other bookmaker) and all the history we’ve uncovered.

The problem…

No one has any photos of this part of the street. I think because it’s right across from the Albert Hall, everyone’s camera pointed across the road for the last 100 years.

Is there anyone out there that can provide us more information on history, and even better a photo?!

We went to Dada Muse today, a massive locally owned collection of the works of Salvador Dali.

It's amazing to have this as a gallery in Launceston. The last pic is me with my favourite Dali - you might think it's a US President, but it becomes a whole different image when you get closer.

Highly recommended, just two blocks from our Kennedy, Harvey and Madiba properties in Launceston.

New Kitchen for Kennedy Townhouse in Launceston Tasmania.

Yes, this is the house with a gorgeous bathroom so we thought we had best update the kitchen too!

Pics in order:
1. Old kitchen when we bought it.
2. The ‘update’ done in 2018 that saw it through until last week.
3. A new kitchen with the slate floors gone, induction cooktop added, granite benchtops and the brass fittings in line with rest of this property.

This, together with a dining room refresh, reconfiguration of laundry and toilet as well as a few other updates all completed in a fortnight.

Thanks to Dave and Kate and all the family who picked up tools in demolition and cleanup, and everyone who pitched in working over each other and fixing challenges as they were uncovered.

Pelicans bring Tassie and NSW together…

We bought these 3 pelicans at the Tasmanian Craft Fair last year from Helen at Pili Pala Pieces.

It’s a fitting last touch for this house renovation back where I was born as it sits across from the Lake and Beach where the pelicans hang out.

This is the Cameron and Tamar Street intersection a few doors up from our Launceston properties. The corner building in this pic is now bob.

In 1908, our Kennedy Terrace House (built 1880) at number 62 was owned by boot maker Jason Barnes and 62a (where Madiba and Harvey apartments are), was his workshop space with a facade set back further than the current one built in the 1920s.

Setting the temperature…

One of the most recent upgrades we’ve started implementing is remote management of air conditioning. Guests can choose their own temperatures when they’re staying of course.

We’ve got a guest checking in to ‘Betty’ in NSW, so we could see the house was at 29 degrees, and remotely start bringing the temperature to a nicer 22 ahead of the guest arrival.

It also means we can ensure it’s off when guests check out to minimise electricity usage which is better for the environment too.

It’s the small touches that add up and we’ll be adding these systems to the other properties through this year.

We've decided to name our new home away from home in Lake Illawarra NSW "Betty", named after the legendary Betty White. She's a hero for the way she made generations laugh, her massive heart, her wit and her ability to unite people even while being brutally honest. She was also a big animal lover, so here are two pics (the first from the Living Area and one peeking into the Master Bed) to celebrate that. Can you spot the subtle connection?

We hope the few touches to celebrate Betty White in this home, will give our guests plenty of things to smile about too.

‘Project Illawarra’ in NSW is coming along.

We’ve been balancing renovation with remote working (day and night) and hadn’t had a chance to walk the 90 seconds to the beach over the last couple of months.

Today, the sand called.

With our new property getting an overhaul across Winter in Lake Illawarra NSW, the foreshore across the road is also getting a major makeover.

The playground currently directly in front of our house, will be moved 100m to the West for more open event space. But also the fitness trails being added and complete overhaul of access to the lake and lagoons is going to be amazing!

We can’t wait to release the new property around October this year 💜
