Reefs in the Southern Great Barrier Reef at Lady Elliot Island and Heron Island recently suffered a bleaching event. While the team at Lady Elliot Island are optomistic about its recovery, it's a reminder for us all to work towards reducing our footprint on the planet - we can all play a role to protect the Reef. Here's Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort's report and explainer:
Letâs talk about coral bleaching; corals like all habitat around the world, are susceptible to external environmental pressures such as climate change. Coral bleaching being one of them, is a stress response caused by a change in conditions and can show up in different ways â from paling in corals, to fluorescent colours and bleached fully white. In most cases corals can recover from bleaching, but in severe cases, there can be mortality. However, with the right conditions, even severely bleached reefs can recover! đ¤
Corals are amazing living organisms that hold incredible capabilities. They are unique to a location and will adapt to their local conditions. On Lady Elliot Island, corals will happily withstand water temperatures up to a maximum of approx. 27 degrees Celsius.
The coral structure you see is made up of tiny little animals called coral polyps. These animals have a symbiotic algae in their tissues that provides them energy through photosynthesis and gives them their golden brown colour.
Over the past few weeks Lady Elliot Island has been experiencing above average water temperatures of up to 2 degrees Celsius. The water is simply too hot and the delicate symbiotic relationship of the coral and zooxanthellae algae is stressed. In response, the corals expel the algae, which causes them to lose their earthy tones.
đ Imagine youâre a coral polyp and youâve just caught a fever, youâve got the sweats, headaches and all round sick. Thatâs what the corals are experiencing right now.
On Lady Elliot Island we have been through similar events in the past and have witnessed

I expect, like us, you've been worried about the state of the Great Barrier Reef following Tropical Cyclone Jasper's little jaunt through northern Queensland and the subsequent flooding. Well - I am happy to be the bearer of GOOD NEWS.
Diveplanit works with a wide network of tourism operators and marine scientists based on the Great Barrier Reef. So, since Christmas, we've been busying ourselves contacting everyone we know that was in Jasper's path to find out more about the impact.
After a few weeks surveying the northern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef, the consensus is: the Reef held its own. This video was taken a couple of days after Jasper passed through by Wavelength Cruises' Tahn Miller.

One lucky loggerhead turtle đ˘tangled in rope from a discarded fishing gear, thankfully spotted & rescued by @johnny_gaskell and friends.

Loggerhead Turtle caught on an abandoned crab pot...!
Spotted from the drone earlier this week off Fraser Island. Luckily we were close by and able to help her free. The turtle was obviously a little freaked out at the start but calmed down within seconds when she realised we were not trying to hurt her. It almost seemed like she was aware we were trying to help and sat perfectly still. We are not sure how long she had been like that but it was clear that the rope wasnât coming off without cutting it.
This is a reminder that even something as simple as a lead rope on a net can be enough to cause a marine animal to become entangled. Keep an eye on your pots.
