Wet fly fishing might not be a perfect science of “matching the hatch” but you can still be strategic in the way you tackle your early season attempts.
An article on how to take your first steps in your fly fishing career.
Day 2 of the 2023-24 Tasmanian trout fishing season saw me heading for a session on Little Pine Lagoon.
As part of our Learn to Fly Fish Program we have a special guest scheduled for the 18 November Workshop. Steve Starling of Starlo's Fishotopia is a great fan of Tasmanian trout and of Herne Lodge and he'll be joining us to share some of his insights into chasing trout on the fly.

A day spent at Penstock Lagoon on the Opening Day of the 2023-24 Tasmanian Trout Fishing Season with The Highland Fly
How fishy does that look! The Tyenna River in southern Tasmania holds loads of feisty brown trout. Well worth a visit!
Always good to see snow in the Central Highlands. These little guys might not be so thrilled, but at this time of the year it's all about building our lake levels.
One of the features of our Learn to Fly Fish group sessions is the opportunity to pick up great prizes from our great supporters at Surday's session we had a bumper end-of-season giveaway.
A new TFO rod from went to one lucky angler.
A $100 gift voucher from for another.

It changes all the time, but this generosity helps make the days that much better!
A day at Twin Lakes - Bush Retreat & Fly Fishery proved very productive for Michael visiting from northern NSW. For someone who had never cast a fly before, 4 beautiful rainbow trout was a great initiation.
Twin Lakes Bush Retreat and Fly Fishery is a great Tasmanian private fishery where some cracking Rainbow and Brown Trout are on offer.Mick, on a short visit ...
Just as well I wasn't planning to use the boat today!
And so the seasons start to change .....
A couple of chunky little browns from Tasmania's Bronte Lagoon. These guys were fossicking in the margins, picking up mayflies as they popped. Happily took the artificial versions.
Love the way trout adapt their colours to their environment. This 55cm brown lives on the barren rocky edge of Tasmania's Great Lake.
He's still there for someone else to catch now.
Don't you just love a good release after a successful "grip 'n grin".
Herne Lodge does it again though - great sport for an enthusiastic visitor from South Africa.
So what do you do when you break your old faithful Sage SLT while fishing on a pretty Central Highland stream? You keep fishing, don't you! The 5 foot version still worked, although it proved a bit difficult to keep pressure on the fish!

This fishery never ceases to amaze me. Lots of fish, but still a great challenge every time you go there.
This was the start of a wonderful day fishing dry flies to wild brown trout on Herne Lagoon in Tasmania's Central Highlands. We arrived to countless fish ris...
The determination of some fish is unrivalled. This fine specimen decided that he wasn't going to be pushed aside by the bigger fish and pounced on the fly.
Little Pine Lagoon does (and did) offer up much bigger fish than this one, but he was still photo-worthy!
Herne Lodge in Tasmania's Central Highlands is offering up great dry fly fishing this season. Mayfly and spinner hatches along with damsel flies means there's fish raring to go!
The Highland Fly shared a post on Instagram: "Herne Lodge in Tasmania's Central Highlands has offered up some phenomenal dry fly fishing this season. Great place to fish and great place to learn to fish. Wonderful population of wild brown trout and mayfly hatches to get excited over. What more could...
The Ouse River never seems to offer up big fish, but there are some very pretty small ones on offer on the right day in the right conditions.
Remnants of a Central Highlands dun hatch decorating the deck. The fish were loving them, but were oh so very wary of artificial imitations!
Freshwater crayfish are not seen regularly in the Central Highlands, but this one seemed happy enough in the Ouse River recently.

A great day with Jo and Stepve Starling - fishing ambassadors from Fishotopia
Just some of the cracking fish that Ollie & Landon scored at yesterday. Beautiful day and the new lake-side hut is going to be a real hit.
Steve and Jo Starling from Starlo's Fishotopia have put together this great little YouTube video of the day they spent with me on Arthurs Lake. Some good stuff in there about the IFS spawning set up at Liawenee that's also with a look.
In the 1980s, '90s and early 2000s, Arthurs Lake in the Tasmanian Central Highlands was the state's premier trout water. But its fishing fortunes declined ra...
The Central Highlands of Tasmania can be a little inhospitable at times. Mum and her joey look a little underwhelmed by today's dump of snow.

While the season has finished, there are still options at private fisheries in Tasmania. This cracking 70cm+ rainbow caught yesterday at 28 Gates after a lot of hard work from Tony. #rainbowtrout #catchandrelease #flyfishingguidetasmania
Final fish of the official season. Last cast on Penstock Lagoon and scored possibly my biggest fish of the season. Can't complain about that! #tasmania #tasmanianflyguide #penstocklagoon #browntrout #catchandrelease #centralhighlandstasmania
To stalk and catch a fish on a tiny dry fly is one of the real thrills of fly fishing. But it doesn't always work out as you expect. #dryflyfishing #flyfishingguidetasmania #flyfishing #trouttasmania #troutguidestasmania #wildbrowntrout
Just a few of the great wild brown trout that Penstock Lagoon offered up today on opening day of the Tasmanian Trout Season. It's time to plan your visit. #tasmanianfishingguide #learntoflyfishtasmania #catchandrelease #wildbrowntrout #tassietroutguide #tassietrout
One of my favourite guiding moments of last season. On his first day casting a fly, Jeff spotted the fish, cast to it, set the hook, played it, landed it, and finally released it. Simply perfect. #troutguidestasmania #tassietroutguide #browntrout #centralhighlandstasmania #catchandrelease #discovertasmania
Was determined to catch a fish to celebrate the Winter Solstice. The ice was a bit daunting, and the near misses were a bit disappointing, but the effort was eventually worth it! #flyfishing #centralhighlandstasmania #tassietroutguide #tasmanianfishingguide #discovertasmania #browntrout #wetflyfishing
