As we enter 2024, it is time to reflect on the greatest city in the world.

Sydney never sleeps, it pulses and glows
From dawn to dusk, from dusk to dawn
It's where the ocean and the streets
Mingle beauty, charm, and culture tones.

You can start your day with sunrise on the sand
At Bondi Beach, a golden gem
Or take a ferry to the Opera House
A masterpiece of art and stem.

You can explore the Rocks, a historic heart
With markets, cafes, buzzing and bright
Or enjoy the Bridge and its views
With vistas and blossoms, a delight.

You can indulge in arts and cuisines
Of suburbs rich in culture and spice
Or relax in parks and reserves
Of nature's wonders, green and nice.

You can end your day with sunset on the bay
A cruise on water, glittering and clear
Or join the CBD and its nightlife
A dazzling show of fun and cheer.

Sydney has something for everyone
A place of fun, discovery, and adventure
Sydney stays in your memory
Once you spend a day in its splendor.

May 2024 bring you all the wealth and happiness you desire.

This week we celebrate incredible Sydney women and discover the important roles they played in making Sydney what it is today

From Sydney’s early days women have called for equality and justice. There are many women highlighted on this tour from those who called for voting rights. Then there are brave women who led the fight for women’s and children’s rights, full equality for Aboriginal people, equal pay, international peace and universal human rights. Others soon took up the issues of government family payments and maternal custody rights. A great deal of what women have won was achieved by the incredible work of a few who rallied and gathered support against, at times, intolerable opposition. Find out their names on this tour

This week we celebrate incredible Sydney women and discover the important roles they played in making Sydney what it is today

In 1925 the very first woman was elected to the NSW Parliament. Today 39% of state and territory parliamentarians are women. This pioneering woman combined a lifelong interest in women’s rights and political participation with conservative politics and a cutting turn of phrase. She was once called a battle-axe by a heckler at a political meeting, she retorted: “A battle-axe is a pretty useful weapon if it’s kept sharp and bright.” She also one of the very first Justices of the Peace in NSW. Join us to learn her name and more incredible stories of her.

The dramatic arts were always a male dominated world with the directors and owners of playhouses and societies owned and operated by men. In the 1920’s the first women in Sydney woman took over as Director at the Sydney University Dramatic Society. Her style and direction were ground breaking at the time and went against all conventional wisdom. She broke new ground and many actors flocked to her theater to work under her. Today we have all female productions ranging from the actors, the crew, director, in fact every role is taken by women. Join us and discover more about her.

It may be the smallest of small bars, but it has one enormous reputation. “Cantina OK” is licensed to have only 20 lucky patrons at a time and all are standing. But each night there is always a waiting line, no reservations and everyone is welcome. The reason is the stunning skills shown buy such a dedicated and highly skilled group of mixologists. Its shelves are stocked with hand-sourced, hand-imported, handmade agave spirits. Its world-famous margaritas and cocktails are served with hand-shaved ice and hand-pressed limes. Join me soon will you.

In true New York or Boston bar tradition, it's difficult to find. Located at in the basement of a building at the back of an unmarked alleyway off Clarence Street, this drinking den – full of character and people – is an unexpected surprise for the first-time visitor. It’s one of the best and most well-stocked and tiered bars we’ve seen for a while. The initially overwhelming list of almost 800 whiskies. The service is friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere remains intimate and tightly packed. This collection of positives explains why there can be a long line to gain entry. The Baxter Inn is for great booze, mad skills and big nights, and Sydney is for Baxter Inn. Always. Join us and we will show you,

Unless you know where it is, you’ll never stumble upon the tiny York Lane bar and café in the CBD. Neatly tucked away into its namesake, the diminutive shop-front is nestled between looming, faceless grey buildings, garbage bins and one-way traffic. But step through the huge sliding door, be greeted by the friendly barista, take in the pre-loved surrounds and you’ll instantly wonder why the city has taken so long to re-imagine its laneways. There’s a definite focus on the repurposed here. From the mirror-paneled wardrobe doors lining the back wall to the wooden salad bowl lightshades, circa 1970s tiles and even the oven everything here has been given a new lease on life. Join us and enjoy

Uncle Ming's is a dimly lit basement bar with funky Chinese inspired decor. They serve dumplings, cocktails, beer, wine and sake in intimate and welcoming surrounds. Take one look at the drinks list and you will realize this isn’t just a Chinese-themed bar. There’s ale from Japan, Sri Lanka and the Philippines, plenty of sake and soju, and umeshu (a Japanese plum liqueur). But the real focus at Uncle Ming’s is whisky. They’ve got more than 90 different types, with 60 from Japan alone. You can easily lose track of time at Uncle Ming’s, and with this much food on offer, no hints of the outside world, and the woody aromas of incense lulling you, why would you want to leave?

Kings Cross has hosted some of the world’s biggest stars including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior, Dusty Springfield, Mick Jagger, Engelbert Humperdinck and the late Burt Bacharach. But in 1964 Sydney was the center of the music world when one of the greatest bands visited and created mayhem when 100’s of fans congregated outside their hotel, screaming for their appearance on the balcony. Les Girls ran from 1963 to 1994 – an icon of Kings Cross for 30 years. The original cast of 11 performers would lip sync songs by artists such as Shirley Bassey and Eartha Kit – later on embracing modern-day icons like Kylie Minogue, Madonna and Tina Turner. The performers’ extravagant costumes were bedazzling confections of sequins, feathers and beads. Undoubtedly, the most famous of the Les Girls was ‘Carlotta’ a transgender Australian cabaret performer, political activist, comedian and television personality. Join us and we will show you where.

If you’re a music fan, chances are you’ve heard the song “Breakfast At Sweethearts” by legendary Aussie band, Cold Chisel. Written by Don Walker, the song epitomized life at the time in the inner Sydney suburb of Kings Cross. Infamous for being Sydney’s red light district, a walk down the main street of Kings Cross today still takes you past countless adult shops, strip clubs, bars and nightclubs, albeit a much more tourist-influenced scene today that what it would have been back in its heyday. Today though the café has been swept away and the location of one Sydney’s most iconic café’s has gone forever. Join us and we will show you were it was.

During the 1950s, topless bars and strip clubs first emerged in Kings Cross. The Roosevelt first introduced topless showgirls in the early 50s and the Staccato Club opened in 1959 as the first strip club in Australia. Darlinghurst Road soon took on the moniker of ‘the strip’ and the area was lit up with neon signage. During the advent of the Vietnam war, thousands of US servicemen visited the cross on Rest and Recreation and were drawn to early strip clubs such as the Pink Pussycat, the Pink Panther, and the Kit Kat club among others. Join us and we will show you where they were.

The bright lights, the colour, the neon, the music and the promise of a special night out drew crowds of people to Kings Cross in the 1950’s and 60’s. People would dress up and would dine in some of the finest restaurants in Sydney town. Then off to a show and then a club to enjoy incredible entertainment from the lies of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Junior. There were venues for the more adventurous and risqué. Kings Cross had it all! Join us and we will show you those spots that still remain and the underbelly of this notorious neighborhood.

When a masked and cloaked bandit robbed the bank at a small gold town in 1869 he created the legend of Andrew George Scott aka “Captain Moonlite”, the gun-toting man of God who enthralled and appalled the nation for more than a decade. He was a man who loved, and was loved unreservedly in return - but more than a century passed before his dying wish to be buried with his soul mate, Andrew Neisbet was granted. Charming, articulate and intelligent, this flawed genius was also a thief, a liar and a chameleon whose true story has been lost to myth and misinformation. A love story that deserves to be celebrated.

The “Midnight Shift” was one of Australia’s biggest (and friendliest) gay venues. It was one of the Sydney’s most famous LGBTIQ venues and had operated for more than 35 years after opening as a men’s disco in 1980. Parties there would go into the daylight hours. It was a landmark on Oxford Street and attracted more then its fair share of famous faces with several leather icons spotted there. The pub closed in 2017 but was soon bought and rebranded as “The Universal”. Join us and we will show you.

On Saturday 24th June, 1978 and resulting from police violence and arrests, a large group of supporters gathered outside the Darlinghurst Police Station. Inside were those who had been brutally arrested hours earlier and were now being subjected to terrible abuse and mistreatment. The following day the arrested names and addresses were published in the Sydney Morning Herald resulting in many losing jobs and accommodation. This dark night in Sydney’s LGBTQ history paved the way for what Sydney is enjoying this week.

Saturday 24th June, 1978. At around 10pm, a small crowd began to gather in Taylor Square rugged up against the cold – it had been a big day. A morning street march and public meeting had been held. Those gathered were now primed for the street festival that became the first Mardi Gras. On that evening in Darlinghurst a small group of protestors formed to contribute to the international Gay Celebrations, the resulting police violence and arrests created a defining night in not only Sydney’s LGBTQI community but Australia’s cultural heritage.
