Did you know is a premier bird-watching destination with 14 species of seabirds breeding here?

One of the most enchanting is the White Tern, which balances a single egg on a branch. Many breeding sites are near the lagoon in the settlement area, allowing us to witness their incredible journey - from tiny fluffball to dazzling adult - before they take flight to explore the world.

Right now, lots of White Terns are fledging and learning to fly! The best way to help them is by not intervening - nature has it covered and their parents are there to support them. If you're concerned about a baby bird, you can report it to the Lord Howe Island Board or DM us or contact the Visitor Centre. Our team will assist with details for qualified handlers.

Happy Discovery Day! 🏝️

Lord Howe Island was discovered on 17th February 1788 by Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, Commander of the armed tender of the First Fleet, HMS Supply. Lieutenant Ball was sailing from First Fleet headquarters in Sydney Cove to Norfolk Island, where it was intended to find a second colony.
The Island was named after Lord Howe, who was the First Lord of the Admiralty at the time.

Ready for a self-guided adventure? 🌴🌴👟

Our top pick for a hike this morning is the Malabar Hill and Kim's Lookout track.
This moderate track can be explored with a guide or on your own. Get up early to watch the sun rise and allow plenty of time to enjoy the scenery 💛🌅
