Miwa Ide’s practice covers a variety of mediums including pottery, textiles, Ikebana, watercolor and Japanese Calligraphy. Her style is simple and elegant and her representation of Western Australian landscape and flora gives a fresh insight into a subject that nurtures her inspiration and imagination.

Q. In what circumstances did you start pottery?
A. I started to explore ceramics after I had my first child 25 years ago. I needed to get out of he house, to have my own time, and to be creative. I started a ceramic course at TAFE in Subiaco (Perth Modern School at the time), then I moved to the countryside and joined the Narrogin Ceramic Group. I returned to Perth five years ago and took courses at Perth Potters Studio and Fremantle Arts centre to brush up on my ceramics skill set.

Q. What does your work aim to say?
A. like my works to embody the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which sees beauty and peace in the imperfections and simplicity of an object. I make sturdy, functional, organic forms that leave the user enjoying the tactile, sensuous feeling of the vessel’s contrasting textures of smooth glazes and natural clay.

Q. What gives you the most joy when making pottery?
A. I really enjoy the unexpected surprises, happy accidents, and sometimes the disappointments. Pottery has a long history and I enjoy experimenting with the variety of methods and procedures, with different clays, glazes and firing techniques that have evolved over centuries. You never know how the final works turn out until you open the kiln. This unpredictability and excitement keep me creating more ceramics.

Q. What do you like most at PSP?
A. For the last three years, Perth Studio Potters has been a hub of the opportunity to access to the studio space with the wheels, the electric and gas kilns , variety of glazes, wide range of tools, and a slab machine. I have been enjoying sharing the studio space, techniques, ideas and knowledge. It is also inspiring to watch some other potter’s creative works and process.

Drawing inspiration from a broad range of influences, Lynda’s love of making is evident in her vibrant, colourful hand built creations. The PSP team caught up with Lynda for chat to glean insight into her motivation to make again following a 20 year hiatus.

Q1. WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH CLAY?
A1. I discovered clay 30 years ago when I was living in a remote mining town (Weipa) in Far North Queensland.
Whilst there, I was fortunate to become friends with many local female Aboriginal elders who took me camping, fishing and foraging with them. One of these ladies was Thancoupie Fletcher (Than), a renown International and Australian potter. Than's huge ceramic murals and pots were instrumental in my experimenting with clay. Weipa had a community ceramic studio and lessons were taught there.
I came to Perth in 1998 - did a pottery course at Tresillian, had a few years making things, life became hectic with work, teenagers, golf and travel so clay work disappeared until COVID. Lockdown saw me rediscover my old tools and glazes and the rest is history. So, thanks to the pandemic I'm creating again.

Q2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CERAMICS?
A2. My ceramics are whimsical, bold, colourful and big - occasionally a serious piece is formed.
The bold colours could possibly be inherited from my Chilean/Spanish ancestry.
I usually use hand paint with underglazes and oxides. Hand building gives me satisfaction and peace whilst creating - almost like a meditation session. I do have a wheel and once could throw pots but now very rusty.
Try, as I have, I can't seem to make small items - my busts and pots magically grow under my fingers!

Q3. A DAY IN THE STUDIO
A3. My day at PSP is usually a Friday and as an early riser, I'm often there by 7-7.30am and work for 4-5 hours. Usually, I am creating a pot or hand painting something. I bisque fire my pieces at home and usually do final touches at PSP.

Q4. PERTH STUDIO POTTERS COMMENTS
A4. Compared to others in PSP - I am a relative recent member having joined in 2021.
The best thing to me being an active member is the camaraderie of such a varied group of people - all ages, nationalities and creative abilities. I value the friendships, support and generous sharing of knowledge. How fortunate we are to be part of PSP.
