AUSTRALIA DAY Inaugral Thong Throwing Competition.

Our Australia Day celebrations made it into one of the Sunshine Coast’s local newspapers, thanks to the efforts of Merrilyn, our club’s Publicity Officer. A great way to reach out to the broad Sunshine Coast community through a highlighted newspaper article.

AUSTRALIA DAY GENERAL MEETING: Part 2 continued.

After much fun, laughter and elimination, the winner of the Inaugural Thong Throwing Competition was none other than our President, Jeff, with 2nd and 3rd place going to members Robyn and Merrilyn respectively. These 3 were the best at judging distance and definitely had stand-out throwing techniques.

AUSTRALIA DAY GENERAL MEETING: Part 2

In keeping with the festive spirit of our first GENERAL MEETING for 2025 we had a thong throwing competition after our barbecue lunch. Other countries have alternative names for thongs; they are known as flip flops in Britain 🇬🇧 and America 🇺🇸, jandals in New Zealand 🇳🇿, slops or plakkies in South Africa🇿🇦 !

AUSTRALIA DAY GENERAL MEETING : Part 1

It was timely that our first General Meeting of the new year, held at the Mapleton Men’s Shed on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland coincided with our national holiday, AUSTRALIA DAY. As well as honouring the establishment of the first permanent European settlement on the Australian continent, it’s a day to celebrate but also to reflect and respect.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:
At the recent AGM, our President Jane stepped down from the position and inaugurated our new President for 2025. Congratulations go to Jeff and many thanks to Jane for a job very well done over the past 2 years. Another formality undertaken was to officially welcome two new members to FFSC; it’s certainly always a bonus to be gaining new members. So as 2024 draws to a close, we will look forward to 2025 being another successful year of promoting friendships through various social events, meetings and, of course, Inbound and Outbound Journeys, both domestic and international.

MANITOBA JOURNEY DAY 7, PART 2:

We all thoroughly enjoyed the farewell dinner at Maroochy Golf Club, which was topped off with some hilarious audio visual entertainment from our 15 ambassadors. There was plenty of time for socialising before the meal was served and once we had finished, it was time for some formalities, presentation of photos and the highly entertaining performance from our ambassadors. The evening’s entertainment was capped off with everyone joining in with our club song, to the tune of ‘Yellow Bird’ (lyrics courtesy of our Robyn S, who unfortunately wasn’t able to join us for dinner to see our stellar performance!)

MANITOBA JOURNEY Day 7: The Farewell Dinner, Part 1.

After a week of getting to know our 15 Canadian ambassadors it was time to bid a fond farewell at a dinner held at Maroochy Golf Club. What a fabulous week it was, getting to know each other through the planned daily outings and activities. We have made some wonderful friends and lots of fond memories to look back upon. Stay tuned for another post, (Part 2); a definite something to remember.

MANITOBA JOURNEY DAY 7: Pumicestone Passage Eco Cruise.

An overcast day but it was a pleasant cruise up the Pumistone Passage, a stretch of water separating Bribie Island from the mainland. It is part of Moreton Bay Marine Park and stretches for 35 km from the northern tip of Bribie Island, south to Deception Bay. It is one of the most important bird and marine habitats on Australia’s east coast, due to the environmental diversity of the passage.

MANITOBA JOURNEY Day 6, Part 2:

Even though the rain continued there was more to see. Some of the group went to the Landsborough Museum, while a few decided to ignore the weather and continue on up to the range to see more of the hinterland. The day finished with ambassadors taking their hosts to dinner at various restaurants on the coast.

MANITOBA JOURNEY Day 6, Part 1: Glasshouse Mountains & Hinterland.

Although the weather could have dampened our enthusiasm for discovering the Glasshouse Mountains region, we journeyed on after an introduction to the area at the Visitor Information Centre and caught glimpses of some of the mountains through the misty low cloud and showery rain. The shelter at Pioneer Park, Landsborough allowed us to keep dry and enjoy a picnic lunch together, before heading off in different directions to discover more about this hinterland area.

MANITOBA JOURNEY Day 5 Square dancing continued.

What a fun evening we all had together. It was encouraging to know that if we had a few more lessons we would all apparently become familiar enough with the square dancing ‘moves’ to be able to do the routine as it was ‘called’ without mistakes. The video on the right shows how easy square dancing is after taking several lessons. Our member Sonia looks like a real professional.
