Do you know DERWENT HUNTER carries a name that is amongst the oldest in Australian maritime history - named after a Whaling Barque built in 1810 and survived a full 97 years before being burnt in December 1907. At least the new DERWENT HUNTER likes watching whales instead of killing them. But that was in the past and part of Australian history. Schooner Derwent Hunter is 78 years old this year, lets get her to 100 years!

From Australasian Underwater Cultural Heritage Database

The river steamer Beautiful Star was laid up at the Domain Slip, alongside the hulk of the former whaling barque Derwent Hunter, when a fire was discovered on board soon after noon on Christmas Day 1907.

Efforts to put out the fire or move the vessel were unsuccessful, and the hulk also caught alight. Members of the Domain Yacht Club, who used the hulk as a store, recovered much of their equipment before the flames drove them back, and by the time the fire brigade arrived both vessels were burning fiercely, and nothing could be done to save either. They continued to burn throughout the day and by the time the fire had died down the 97-year old Derwent Hunter had been burned to the waterline and Beautiful Star was just a shell. The remains of the Derwent Hunter were blown up in 1928, along with those of the nearby Waterwitch.

Derwent Hunter, ON 32,094, was a former barque of 368 grt, 106.2’ x 29.0’ x 18.6’, built at Kensington, United States, as North America in 1810, and had been renamed on her sale to Alexander McGregor of Hobart in 1861. The vessel served mostly as a whaler until being laid up at McGregor’s Slip at the Domain in 1885, and was later sunk close inshore for use as part of the jetty and for storage.

Thanks to Andrew Storey, whose father Tom Storey was engineer on the Hunter in the early 1950's for some great pictures and a couple of news articles.

23rd June 1977, article from Hobart Mercury about the Schooner Derwent Hunter coming home with Bern. FINALLY two (2) new names have popped up as owners. First, legendary Sydney Hobart sailer, Dr Tony Fisher and the lost owner prior to Bern whose name, as outlined in this artice is Dave Edwards.

Tony was a surgeon and sailer had a number of racing yachts called Helsal built. The first is a Joe Adams designed Ferro Cement maxi that won the 1973 Sydney Hobart and he had a few others after that including Helsal II, III and IV.

The article states Tony beat Bern at the CSIRO auction in 1961 (should be 1962?). Was Tony part of Derwent Hunter Enterprises who had it until 1974 with Lloyd Hughes? Or is there another transaction in there somewhere?

The second name Dave Edwards has eluded us for a while until now. He only owned it for a couple of years and bought in the water, sight unseen in 1974 and was the one left in Cairns keeping her afloat, whilst riddled with worm.

Who has some information of these two gentlemen?
