The Awakening of the Wild

As the first rays of the sun spread across the horizon, casting the world in hues of gold and amber, the stage is set for another day in the grand theater of the wild.

Birds, wildebeests, zebras, they all fill the air with their songs and the landscape with life. Yet, amongst them all, the queen makes her presence known. Graceful and powerful, she stretches lazily in the morning sun, her regal elegance standing out against the backdrop of the Serengeti.

We were blessed to have some good rains throughout the reserve today.

She's a beauty: this female sub-adult leopard is slowly growing into her own and gaining more independence every day. Leopards are typically very solitary animals, and their territory can cover between ten to several hundred square kilometers.

Anabezi's location on the far end of the flood plain is home to a very healthy and high density leopard population - in fact it's quite unusual for such a small area. On the night this female was spotted, she was one of five leopard sightings in less than an hour.

We saw this beautiful young male leopard with an Impala kill this morning. His belly was so full that he could hardly breathe. Well hidden of course, he laid in a drainage line in between thick bush and grass. 🐆

Those eyes - beautiful but also one of the best tools in a lion's arsenal. Lions' exceptional nocturnal vision is a result of the cone to rod ratio in the retina. Lions have about 25 rods to each cone in their retinas - whereas humans have about 4.

Cones aid in seeing colors, while rods reflect more light into the eye.

Lions, like all cats, lack the cones to see red colors, but the higher rod ratio allows them to hunt with precision in total darkness.

It’s WORLD ELEPHANT DAY. 🐘🌍

Today we raise awareness to the urgent plight of elephants globally. Major threats, leading to the rapid decline in elephant populations, include the illegal trade of ivory, habitat fragmentation and human wildlife conflict. This day is observed with the aim to educate, preserve and protect our endangered elephants and to recognise the importance of this magnificent species. Let’s rally together in show of support to the incredible conservation organisations that are hard at work trying to protect our elephants from extinction. May this collective, global movement safeguard the future of elephants by making this world a safer place for these gentle giants and their habitats. 🐘🖤

The Great Migration has begun to arrive in the Masai Mara.
Millions of wildebeest and a few thousand zebra continue their constant circular movement through Tanzania into Kenya, in search of greener pastures to graze.
Viewing the migration is spectacular, and can surface a variety of emotions as the route is not without its dangers and unscripted stories. These forward focused herbivores have to cross the crocodile infested Mara River to safely reach the rich grass plains, only to avoid the ever hungry eyes of waiting predators as they breathlessly chase the rain.

You can experience this incredible wildlife event on a number of our East African tours ~> https://bit.ly/NomadTourFinder

On a dusty, windy morning, we found this lioness hunting in the eroded drainage channels at the edge of a large plain. Even with the strong wind to cover her smell and mask her approach, her quarry caught sight of her and sounded the alarm.

Photo tip: using the lower ground to get below this lioness provides an attractive angle which emphasises her size and stature. Placing her at the top of the frame includes the patterns of eroded soil below her, which adds to the image’s impact and tells the story of her situation.

Nothing resonates quite as deeply as the news that a number of rhino calves have been born in Akagera National Park.

Their mothers were part of the historic November 2021 translocation in which 30 white rhino were moved from Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa to Akagera National Park in Rwanda.

The reserve – co-managed by African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) – was chosen as an ideal landscape in which to extend the range of this species, and it’s our hope that it will become a breeding stronghold for white rhinos.

This translocation was made possible through our partnership with African Parks, the Rwanda Development Board, and Conservation Solutions , with funding provided by the Howard G Buffett Foundation.
