Three New French Museums to Add to Your List!

Art is in bloom, and these spots are worth a future visit.

* Museum of Modern Art at Fontevraud – Loire Valley *

This fall, the twelfth-century Royal Abbey of Fontevraud debuts the Museum of Modern Art at Fontevraud. The Loire Valley’s latest museum highlights Martine and Léon Cligman’s collection, with works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Corot, and Degas, and, in the monastery’s former stables, sculptures by Rodin and his contemporaries.

* La Fab – Paris *

In Paris’ thirteenth arrondissement, designer Agnès Troublé (aka Agnès b.), a contemporary-art collector, recently opened La Fab. The space includes a gallery with rotating exhibitions of her more than 5,000 artworks, an exhibition space, and a bookstore in an apartment building for low-income families.

* Bassins de Lumières – Bordeaux *

Housed in a WWII submarine base, Bordeaux’s Bassins de Lumières recently opened as the world’s largest digital-art space. Four reflective, water-filled basins have been converted into theaters for digital art projected over the 156,000-square-foot interior. Running through January 3, 2021, its two main exhibitions feature works by playful German abstractionist Paul Klee and the gilded images of Viennese secessionist Gustav Klimt set to music.

Which Cruise Style Is Right for You?

With a fleet of ocean, river, and expedition ships that call on destinations around the globe, Viking gives cruisers plenty of options – don’t worry, we’ll help you find a great itinerary.

Ask three avid cruisers about their favorite memory, and each could paint a very different picture: watching the sun set over miles of deep-blue sea, taking in the skyline of a centuries-old European city, or feeling an icy breeze while penguin-spotting in Antarctica. Though destinations open a world of possibility, individual cruise lines provide consistency. Every Viking ship and itinerary, from river cruises to ocean voyages and science-focused expeditions, includes a strong focus on cultural immersion and a complimentary shore excursion in every port. Things you’ll never find on a Viking cruise? Formal nights with ball gowns and tuxedos, nightclubs blasting dance music, or large-scale water parks.

“Viking really is a thinking-person’s cruise line for people who want to go home having learned something about a destination,” says Virtuoso travel advisor Brenda Hunsberger. With an adults-only policy and limited intercom announcements, Viking cruises prioritize a sense of calm on board while a deep roster of science and history lectures stokes a sense of curiosity about the world. Energy-efficient vessels and working science labs (on expedition ships) also underscore the line’s efforts toward a more sustainable future for cruising.

Choosing which Viking cruise to take – river, ocean, or expedition – may be your toughest decision. Here, we break down the differences and what to expect on board.

The Capital of Culture: River Cruising
Immersion is key to river cruising’s appeal. “River cruises are for the curious traveler who wants the opportunity to explore from the minute they disembark,” says Hunsberger. “In addition to major cities such as Vienna and Budapest, you get to see smaller, intriguing ports that you might miss if you flew in.”

Viking’s international fleet of more than 80 Longships are a staple of European river cruising, and their intimate atmosphere and easy access to riverside cities expands into other continents as well. Largely identical, 190-passenger vessels sail on 11 of Europe’s major waterways, including popular jaunts down the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers. The company also crossed the Atlantic into North America last fall with the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi, purpose-built to cruise the Mississippi River from the southern U.S. up to Saint Paul, Minnesota. Other global highlights include 11-night, round-trip-from-Cairo sailings on the Nile and 14-night Southeast Asian journeys along the Mekong River.

“The world’s great cities were built on rivers,” says Virtuoso advisor Anne Scully, who recommends a new take on a beloved destination: a seven-night, round-trip-from-Paris cruise along the Seine on one of Viking’s smaller, 168-passenger ships that can moor steps from the Eiffel Tower. Staterooms that each have French balconies or verandas, along with the ship’s glass-enclosed bow, provide ideal vantages for glimpsing the sparkling landmark before departing for the heart of Normandy.

Viking’s new 2023 river-cruising itineraries go beyond capital cities, including a 14-night, Rhine- and Rhone-river combo from Amsterdam to Avignon. This four-country journey calls on the cobblestoned streets and half-timbered houses of medieval Koblenz, Germany, as well as French culinary strongholds such as Strasbourg and Lyon. Farther east, a 16-night, Bucharest-to-Vienna adventure on the Danube highlights Romania’s ancient churches and monasteries, Serbian and Yugoslavian art in Novi Sad, and Croatian wine country.

The Classic: Ocean Cruising
Ocean-cruising style can vary across the world, from Arctic fjords and glaciers to romantic Mediterranean ports, Caribbean beaches, and multicultural Southeast Asian cities, to name a few. “Viking’s ocean cruises are great for people who want to cover a lot of ground,” says Hunsberger. “Ocean cruises are not quite as intensely port driven, but the ships have wonderful amenities.”

Viking’s eight, 930-passenger ocean liners are sleek in Scandinavian style and include balconies and heated bathroom floors in every stateroom, a top-deck pool with a retractable roof, and complimentary spa access to Nordic saunas and other wellness treats. Casual conversation flows easily among passengers sharing memories over cocktails backed by grand-piano music or tucked into cozy living-room spaces with plush sofas and stocked bookshelves.
The line, helmed by Torstein Hagen of Norway, comes by its Scandinavian expertise honestly, which is reflected in immersive experiences across the region. Coastal Norway’s snowcapped peaks, fjords, and fishing villages star on new 14-night, Bergen-to-Reykjavík voyages aboard the 930-passenger Viking Neptune and Viking Saturn that include plenty of bird-watching (and potential polar bear-spotting) around the Svalbard archipelago before volcanic excursions in Iceland.

Viking’s global ocean presence also makes for some goal-worthy world cruises: In 2024, a pair of 121-night, Los Angeles-to-London sailings on the 930-passenger Viking Sky and Viking Neptune will call on 23 countries. The routes string together Hawaiian islands, Bora Bora lagoons, and Egyptian temples with unexpected stops to see Portuguese influences in Goa, India, and thermal pools in Rotorua, New Zealand.

The Trendsetter: Expedition Cruising
Even timeless brands know how to embrace industry trends. Viking entered the expedition cruising chat in 2022 with two new Polar Class, 378-passenger expedition vessels: the Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which kept heated floors and ocean views in every stateroom and added drying closets for expedition gear. Both ocean and expedition cruises include complimentary dining with an elegant-casual dress code at The Restaurant, serving regionally inspired cuisine (often seafood, steaks, and salads), as well as Italian staples in the dimly lit Manfredi’s, where black-and-white portraits line the walls.

“Expedition cruising is for travelers who have a sense of adventure,” says Hunsberger, who praises the educational value of citizen-science projects woven into the Viking experience. Staff scientists and pros from Cambridge University’s Scott Polar Research Institute and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) invite passengers into their research. Weather balloons launched from the top deck beam info to interactive screens on board, and cruisers can join hands-on projects to help monitor migratory birds in Patagonia or don lab coats and learn to measure microplastics in Antarctic waters from shipboard science labs. A window-lined amphitheater hosts history and science lectures by day, as well as intimate musical performances on occasional evenings.

Viking’s expedition ships also feature some industry-first technology: an indoor hangar to launch special-operations boats off the stern on journeys around Antarctica and the Great Lakes. The collection of water toys also includes Zodiacs and kayaks, plus two six-person yellow submarines with domed windows for underwater exploration.
Octantis and Polaris take turns seeking out ice floes, whales, and penguins in Antarctica from November to March and cruising the Great Lakes and Canada between April and September. If both hemispheres sound appealing, new Longitudinal World Cruises combine the journeys with stops in Central and South America. One example: a 64-night, Buenos Aires-to-Milwaukee, Wisconsin, sailing that visits nine countries, exploring Antarctica before returning north via Chilean fjords and Patagonian glaciers, transiting the Panama Canal, and heading up the U.S. East Coast before slipping through the Saint Lawrence Seaway to spend time in the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater system in the world.
