Basic Kayak Safety Rules That All Boaters Should Follow:
As with all recreational activities, there is always the possibility of injury or death. Always use common sense and follow all safety rules at all times.

🚣 Be aware of weather conditions and water temperature. Prepare for changes in weather and the possibility of a capsize. If paddling in cold water, a wet suit or dry suit can keep you warm and comfortable. In warm weather, a long sleeve shirt can provide sun protection.

🚣 Invest in appropriate clothing for your climate. One advantage of sit-inside kayaks is that you can shield yourself from some of the elements, while sit-on-tops leave you more exposed. Dress for the day.

🚣 Beware of off-shore winds that make it difficult to return to shore.

🚣 Always follow the boating rules of the area you're in.

🚣 Never mix alcohol or drugs (prescription or non-prescription) with boating.

🚣 Never exceed the weight capacity of your boat and always check your equipment for wear and tear before you paddle.

🚣 Seek qualified instruction to learn proper paddling techniques, water safety and basic first aid.

🚣 Brush up on self-rescue first in calm, warm, shallow water, and again in more extreme conditions.

🚣 Most importantly, WEAR YOUR PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE. Coast Guard regulations require that all kayaks have a lifejacket on board. Wearing your lifejacket will help keep your head above water and add insulation to your body, keeping you warmer in cold water. There are great PFDs designed specifically for paddlers. Buy one that fits well, and always wear it while you paddle.

🚣 Tell someone your paddle plan, which includes: where you are going, what you will be doing, how long you expect to be gone and how many people are in your party. Then stick to your plan.

🚣 Paddling in the surf zone or in rivers can be dangerous. Always wear a helmet.

🚣 Stay hydrated. Always bring plenty of water and food.

🚣 When paddling in a new area, check with the locals regarding currents, shoreline conditions and weather patterns. Plan an "escape" route - an alternative place to get off the water should environmental conditions dictate it. Abiding by these rules will help to make your kayak adventure safer and fun.

We have tours on nearly every day and would love for you, your family and friends to come and join us and see a bit more of this beautiful place that we live in.

꧁•⊹٭𝕎𝕀𝕃𝕃 𝕀 ℂ𝔸ℙ𝕊𝕀ℤ𝔼 𝔸 𝕃𝕆𝕋 ٭⊹•꧂

It is infrequent that kayaks capsize, and when it does, it is often due to people acting inappropriately or a sudden or uneven distribution of weight. Our kayaks are very stable and easy to handle & safer with two people carrying the kayak.

Kayak fun has had one capsize in the last four years due to an impatient participant rocking the kayak with the paddle when above his head swinging up and down.

We have tours on nearly every day and would love for you, your family and friends to come and join us and see a bit more of this beautiful place that we live in.

🚣7 GREAT TIPS FOR BEGINNERS 🚣

Going on a paddlesport adventure for the first time is intimidating. However, knowing a few tips and tricks helps put those initial fears at ease.

1.) Have someone assist you into the kayak

Having someone assist you can help ensure that you don’t flip the kayak the first time getting in and that your seat is properly adjusted to your height. There should always be three points of contact between you and your paddle craft. Stay low while entering and existing to help you from losing your balance.

2.) Make sure to wear a life jacket, or have one with you
Even if you are a good swimmer, all water vessels are required by law to have at least one wearable life jacket per person on board. Before heading out make sure you have it with you and easily accessible in case something were to happen.

3.) Don’t overload your boat
Bring water, sunscreen, and proper clothing for the weather. Without water, you can suffer from heat exhaustion , heat cramps, and dehydration. Staying prepared for the weather helps in avoiding dangerous circumstances. Check to If you hear thunder or there are any predicted storms before you leave for your trip.

4.) Be ready for the weather
Bring water, sunscreen, and proper clothing for the weather. Without water, you can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and dehydration. Staying prepared for the weather helps in avoiding dangerous circumstances. Check to If you hear thunder or there are any predicted storms before you leave for your trip.

5.) Don’t let your arms do all the work
An important kayaking tip is getting the paddle motion down correctly. The paddle motion should be using your core along with your arms and shoulders. Overextending and overusing your arms can lead to injuries.

6.) Know the whistle distress signals in case of emergency
When going on an outdoor adventure expect the unexpected. Though I hope you never have to use them, brushing up on the distress signals is good to know before going on any trip.

One short blast tells other boaters, “I intend to pass you on my port (left) side.”
Two short blasts tell other boaters, “I intend to pass you on my starboard (right) side.”
Three short blasts tell other boaters, “I am operating astern propulsion.” For some vessels, this tells other boaters, “I am backing up.”

7.) Waterproof gear
Wearing water proof gear is essential during colder months. When the weather is warm, wearing my bathing suit is always a good move. The most important aspect of wearing waterproof gear is ensuring your technology are safe and dry if your boat were too flip. Put all of your tech gear in a dry bag or a ziplock bag.

Hope these kayaking tips are helpful!

🛶 MONTH LIVING FROM THE OCEAN IN A 17FT CANOE 🛶
How much fun does this look? Had to share this fantastic video from Back 2 Basics Adventures of what would have been an amazing experience.

🏝️ KAYAKING THE WILD - EPISODE. 1 🛶

A lot of people said we were mad, that we wouldn't make it, that we would get attacked by crocs, that we would run out of water, go hungry... well at times, some of this was right. But one thing's for sure, it's one of the best things I've ever said YES to doing, and I'm truly grateful to be a part of...

Incredibly excited to share this trip with you. One month at sea, travelling self sufficiently, through one of the most remote parts of the world, Cape York Peninsula. An expedition of five mates, on an adventure of a lifetime.

This episode starts the journey with a 42km (26mile) paddle through the open ocean to get to our first island campsite. Where we get a surprise to see Strick & Fran there to meet us. This was a huge day and one that when re-watching brings me to tears. Thanks for watching and supporting, hope to see you out here... Az

𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍 𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐒
Many beginner paddlers fail to realise how loud rivers can be. You’d be surprised how easily the noise of turbulent, flowing water can drown your ability to communicate.
And as you spend more time on the water, you learn how vital it is to keep in contact with everyone in the group.

But yelling at the top of your lungs isn’t how you want to spend your day, huh 😳

The good news is that there’s a series of signals and hand gestures that allow kayakers to communicate on the water.
So, if you’ll be kayaking in a group – and you should – it might be a good idea to learn the most commonly used signals 👋👍🖖
You never know when these can come in handy!

𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑 𝐊𝐀𝐘𝐀𝐊 𝐏𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇𝐍𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄

Learning how to paddle a kayak isn’t rocket science. But that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to dedicate some time to learning the basics.

Before you set out on your first outing, make sure that you know:
🚣How to hold a kayak paddle, orient it correctly, and maintain the so-called paddler’s box
🚣How to perform basic paddle strokes, focusing on the forward, reverse, sweep, and draw strokes
🚣How to perform basic turns and maneuver your kayak

The best way to learn these techniques is to take a guided tour or class and get instruction from an experienced paddler. But just make sure to spend the time to learn proper paddling techniques as a beginner, and you’ll set solid foundations for growing as a kayaker.
Plus, a good paddle stroke will help reduce fatigue, prevent paddling-related injuries, allow you to control your kayak more efficiently – and make your outings more enjoyable overall.

Top tip – A sure-fire way of spotting a newbie or first-timer out on the water is that they have the paddle blades around the wrong way! This radically reduces the paddle’s effectiveness.
👉As a general rule; the brand’s sticker will be on the front of the paddle blade. Looking at the blade face, the sticker will be readable if the blade is up the right way.

🚣‍♀️OUR NEWEST ADVENTURE - FORT LYTTON 🚣
Kayak Fun is looking for people who are interested in joining us on our newest adventure.

We are so excited to announce our Fort Lytton tours are now open for bookings.

These tours are paddling a short distance one way to Fort Lytton where the river runs into Moreton Bay.
This is an amazing part of the Brisbane River and of our cities history that so many know so little about.

💥FORT LYTTON 💥
Fort Lytton defended Brisbane continuously from colonial times until after WW2. The historic fort consists of about a hectare of colonial buildings, tunnels and other fortified structures embedded in a protective earth-mound wall and surrounded by a 10m-wide water-filled moat. In addition, numerous other fortifications, museum buildings and outdoor exhibits occupy the 13 hectare site.

🚣𝐊𝐀𝐘𝐀𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐈𝐏𝐒 🚣‍♀️
Getting into kayaking can be intimidating – taking up a new sport always is. But just because there’s a lot you need to figure out doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.

But to stay safe and ensure that everything goes smoothly, there are some kayaking tips for beginners you should be aware of before pushing off the shoreline that we would love to share with you.

˜”*°•.˜”*°• 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐓𝐨 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐧 & 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐎𝐟 𝐀 𝐊𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐤
•°*”˜.•°*”˜
You’re not going anywhere until you learn how to get in and out of a kayak.

Wait, isn’t getting in supposed to be the easy part?

Well, not quite. Transitioning from solid ground to water doesn’t always go as smoothly as you’d imagine.

I didn’t get it right at first – and while I’m not saying you won’t, it’s probably better to inform yourself on how to do it right, just to be on the safe side. All it takes is practice; you’ll figure it out and get over the initial wobbliness pretty quickly.

The three methods of launching a kayak you should work on are:
- Getting into a kayak from the shore
- Getting into a kayak from a dock
- Getting into a kayak from the water

Skip this part, and you’ll likely be in for an unplanned swim before you even launch your kayak and start paddling 🥺

As for getting out of a kayak, the instructions couldn’t be more straightforward: Just complete the steps in reverse 🙌

🚣 TINGALPA CREEK TOURS 🚣‍♀️
Our Tingalpa Creek tours are very popular with families and those wanting a more relaxed easy paddle as the creek has lots of mangroves that provide great shelter from strong winds as well as the sun ☀️

Our first session in the Tingalpa Creek mangroves was part of Andrew's training seven years ago. It was with a group of university students who just loved the quiet and tranquility of the environment.
They took full advantage of this amazing waterway with one student climbing in the branches of the mangrove trees & the next deciding a kayak could be used as a stand-up paddleboard 😁
So it was a really wonderful way for them to experience this lovely ecosystem that is right in our own backyard.

When compared with Brisbane river, Tingalpa creek is extremely safe training spot compared to the more physical workout that you would get on Brisbane River when you are paddling against the strong tide.
So a great tour to take with the kids or those that are just starting out on their kayaking journey.

We have tours happening nearly every day and would love for you, your family, and friends to come and join us and see a bit more of this beautiful place that we live in.

And available spots fill very quickly!

WHAT'S A SUPERMOON?
A supermoon occurs when the Moon’s orbit is closest (perigee) to Earth at the same time the Moon is full. So what's so special about a supermoon? For the interested observer, there's plenty to see and learn.

The Moon orbits Earth in an ellipse, an oval that brings it closer to and farther from Earth as it goes around.
The farthest point in this ellipse is called the apogee and is about 253,000 miles (405,500 kilometers) from Earth on average.
Its closest point is the perigee, which is an average distance of about 226,000 miles (363,300 kilometers) from Earth.
When a full moon appears at perigee it is slightly brighter and larger than a regular full moon – and that's where we get a "supermoon.

So don't risk missing this opportunity to have "front row" seats for this beautiful event.

Our Story

Andrew McCallum OWNER / TOUR GUIDE

Andrew is the owner and main tour guide at Kayak Fun. He has been paddling canoes & kayaks for over 45 years with several gap years when he was distracted with water skiing, snow skiing as well as with sailing & swimming.

Andrew grew up in a swimming family & started paddling Canadian canoes as a boy scout and then progressed to kayaks. As part of the Mitta Mitta Canoe Club in Albury Wodonga, most rivers were paddled throughout North Eastern Victoria & sometimes Andrew paddled white water throughout late winter/ early spring in the thawed water flowing from the snowfields.

During a brief time with a Canberra canoe club Andrew found himself teaching eskimo rolling kayaks in a heated swimming pool (a luxury he didn’t have whilst learning!). With busy family life in Canberra he would annually practice eskimo rolling in the backyard pool.
