Supporting and encouraging greater local participation with our Kokoda Track treks.

We do this by providing employment and income generating opportunities for local guides, porters, guesthouse owners, campsite owners, and the villagers in general along the Kokoda Trail.

Maintaining mutually healthy relations is paramount in continuing to foster a sustainable Kokoda tourism industry for the benefit of all stakeholders involved, but more so for the local Koiari, Kokoda and Ewage people living along the length and width of the infamous wartime track.

The Kokoda Track is a significant part of Australia’s military history.

It was the scene of a bitter battle by Australian forces to prevent the Japanese from capturing Port Moresby, and threatening the Australian mainland, according to many Kokoda veterans.

During the fierce fighting, Australian diggers had formed a very special bond with their Papuan counterparts, which continues to this day.

The track which goes from Owers Corner in the south, to the village of Kokoda in the north, acknowledges the bravery of all those who served in the Kokoda Track Campaign.

Today, it’s one of Papua New Guinea’s major tourist attractions serviced by many Australian and local PNG tour operators.

The extraordinary greenery and scenery along the Kokoda Track is absolutely breathtaking.

At every turn, lookout, and vantage point, there’s always something to be viewed, explored, and appreciated.

There’s a flurry of sleepy battle sites that’ve witnessed unimaginable human carnage, trails of decade-old bush tracks each with a story to tell, a scattering of villages whose inhabitants bore witness to adversaries fighting to occupy a piece of the track, a flourishing of rivers and creeks that carry the blue and cool mountain waters out to sea, a clumpy and misty lining of clouds canvassing the impassable terrain and putting on a show, and a grandeur of domineering mountain ranges that crisscross the wartime thoroughfare like fortified defensive walls to keep the enemy at bay.

There’s so much you can see and do along the Kokoda Track, you’re only limited by your own imagination.

View of Menari village and airstrip from a lookout on the climb to Brigade Hill.

There are many spots like this one along the Kokoda Track that provide breathtaking birds eye view of villages, surrounding mountains, valleys, and cliffs that’ll blow your mind away.

So the trek can be challenging, but it can be mesmerising and fulfilling as well, which makes it worthwhile doing it.

The people that have done Kokoda will tell you it’s the best experience they’ve ever had, and they were glad they did it.

Prepare yourselves for the reopening of the Kokoda Track.

The indications we’re getting and seeing is that the track will reopen around the middle of this year; if not, early next year.

So to be prepared, decide who you want to trek with, when you want to trek, what you need for the trek, what trek you’d like to do, and how much it’ll cost you.

Tell us one thing about a place that makes trekking the Kokoda Track adventurous.

Today, we bring you Isurava battlefield, a spot that’s full of character, and spine-tingling moments.

The first Australian to ever be awarded a VC on Australian soil was at the Battle of Isurava. He is Private Bruce Steel Kingsbury, of the 2/14th Infantry Battalion, a former real estate agent from Victoria. During the battle, 99 Australians were killed, and 111 wounded.

During your Kokoda Trail trek, the context to be drawn from stories like this will motivate, spur you on, and give you a spring in your step to keep going, when you feel the challenge is a bit too much for you, and the fatigue is starting to throw a spanner in the works.

These are your local guides and porters. They are a selfless, tough, and tenacious lot. They personify their legendary forefathers, who served alongside Australian troops on the Kokoda Track, and at Buna, Sanananda, and Gona, in the Second World War.

With the spirit of service imbued in their empathic sociable persona, past trekkers have commended their dedication, and diligence. These group of fine men always go beyond the call of duty when called upon.

They are well liked by our trekkers, some even going to great lengths to create special bonds with their porters, to support them and their families.

Happy Valentines Day!

Wives and girlfriends of solders, airmen, and seamen, often sent their husbands and boyfriends love letters on Valentines Day.

This may have been the case for many of our Australian troops sent to New Guinea (PNG) in the Second World War.

“Darling, I hope you like this rather weird pose. This was the surprise I had for you and I do hope you like it. I love to keep you well supplied with pictures, so you won’t ever have a chance to forget me … so this photo is from me … Lots of love and millions of kisses, Pat.”

This was part of a letter with a photo enclosed Patricia Brim, age 20, had written to her husband Raymond, on Valentine’s Day 1944. Raymond was fighting the N***s in Europe with the army air corp (Brockell 2021).

Owers Corner is like a gate to a lion’s lair. When you exit out of it, you feel euphoric, and relieved. But when you’re just about to enter, you sense fear of the unknown, and relative trepidation.
