Clothing Creating Change

Our main goal with ChangeTee is to break down the stigma surrounding mental health with shirts that promote conversation and tell a story. 1 in 5 people suffer from a mental health illness which is a pretty alarming fact. The scariest part is that most of these people suffer in silence and it normally ends in tragedy. ChangeTee was born from our own experiences with menta

l health and the feeling of being alone in the experience, this is what we hope to change. Through positive messages and designs that tackle issues surrounding mental health we want you to be able to share your story and experiences with the world and look and feel great whilst doing so. Sometimes a small conversation can change it all. Every single tee will be handprinted, packed and sent by us with a handwritten thank you message to make you feel extra special. But that's not even the best part, every purchase will help charities and programs supporting the community, so you can feel good knowing that you are also helping someone else in need. ChangeTee is more than just clothing. We will be working with the community and charities to create events, fundraisers and workshops that work towards bringing awareness to mental health and help break the stigma once and for all.

I’ve been pretty quiet during the SSM debate for a couple of reasons which I was going to vocalise now, however I’ve decided that there has been enough debate around the whole situation that I feel it’s unnecessary.

So now onto the positives. Firstly I want to say how excited Jay and I are that we are now able to start planning a future that until today wasn’t possible in the country we reside in. Yes we have already set a date and it’s probably not as soon as you would expect (apparently g**s don’t do anything low key according to Jay). For now we will say it’s going to be in 2019 ❤️

Today isn’t just about that one piece of paper as the notion of equality goes far beyond marriage equality for the LGBTIQ community. Today marks the start of a new way forward. One where the majority of Australians believe that the LGBTIQ community is equal and we are accepted for the human beings we are. Sure, we probably have a long way to go before we feel comfortable holding our partner’s hand down the street but this day is the positive change we need in the community. I hope it casts a light on the ledge that many people in the LGBITQ community stand on, contemplating if the life we “choose” is worth living. I hope they can see that it’s okay to be who you are. It’s okay to stand up and be yourself, to love who you want and marry the person you want to grow old and grey with. Something I now have the pleasure in doing.

Finally, I want to say how proud I am of Jay during this whole process. As someone in the public eye, the pressure to take on all aspects of the situation and be a “voice” for equality at times took its toll. There were nights where we discussed the possibility of what we would do if it didn’t pass. There were nights we discussed the insults and incredibly narrow minded comments that were fired at him and our relationship, and there were times we just wanted to pretend the whole thing wasn’t happening. In the end it was all worth it. Your strength, resilience and dedication to stand up and be the voice for those who don’t have one is why I admire the person you are. Your selfless nature is something that will never go away. I love you so much and I can’t wait to get stuck into planning the big event with you. 🌈 - Jamie

I sat on this for a few days. Wasn't going to say anything. But I thought I would so the not so strong LGBTI community know that at times, even the strongest of us get s**t thrown at us. You're not alone. In September I will be on stage, again, doing what I love. Theatre!!!! The musical is "Jesus Christ Superstar". The message read "I have noticed you are a thespian. I also find it Ironic that you're performing in a religious production. Jesus Christ Superstar is a musical which tells the story of our lord, Jesus Christ. Jesus was against Q***r individuals like yourself. What message are you sending to young vulnerable people". I responded with "My message is to show young people in the world who might be different, that they might meet with some undesirables like yourself along the way in life".... I have since been blocked. Please know that bullying isn't ok. Never will be. Quick plug though: Jesus Christ Superstar, onstage 8 & 9th September at the MECC. 👍👍👍 - Jay

The samesex marriage plebiscite is dominating news headlines in Australia at present. Its been announced that we will soon, receive a ballot in the mail asking if Australians support samesex marriage. On the same day of that announcement, my partner Jamie and I were in Bali, visiting the spot where he proposed to me 12 months earlier. In that 12 months there would have been hundreds, if not thousands of divorces, domestic violence cases, children and families living homeless on the streets. The elderly who struggle day to day with the cost of living and returned service men and women who need support. Yet our government thinks its "right" to spend $122M on a plebiscite. Wow.

I get there are people who aren't in favour of samesex marriage. I get it and I respect their opinion. I have elders in my family who didn't get it at first, but who have now realised that this affects them because it affects me. For those who oppose samesex marriage, think about this. Just because you have that opinion, doesn't mean it's right. There is lots of things that happen in the world that I don't agree with, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

Il tell you what is wrong. Its wrong that two people who can love one another, care for each other, plan a life together and to have one of that partnership pass away and the remaining partner not having equal rights as someone who is in a "binding relationship" (marriage).

I was debating to write about this. But I decided to for two reasons. 1) because I can't just stand by and not be heard. Or speak for the thousands of young LGBTI people who have yet to come out to their parents (which I might add is a very tough thing to do) and try and make their life a little easier when they grow older. 2) I have seen some rather nasty comments in the past couple of days. Some even directed at me. This made me sad. Sad to think that us, as Aussies, can't even stand up for each other and move on. The same Aussies that cheer on QLD or NSW in State Of Origin. The Same Aussies that held our breath for Stuart Diver as we watching him being dragged out as the only survivor in the Threadbo landslide all those years ago. The Same Aussies who help each other in natural disasters! The Same Aussies that celebrate Christmas on the same day. You know what I'm talking about - when you go to your families place on Christmas Day and in travelling to their place(s), you pass cars full of people who are driving to do the same thing. Celebrate together. What makes me sad is, some of those people in those cars, at that football stadium, watching those TVs and helping in Natural disasters are the type of people who frown upon me (and others) because we are different.

How stupid would it be if fat people weren't allowed to marry. What if people with Blonde hair weren't allowed to marry people with brown hair??? Stupid huh? Yep... it sounds ridiculous doesn't it? Well that's how we (I can't speak for all of us) feel. It doesn't make sense.

When you receive your ballot paper, really consider someone you know who might be in the position I and hundreds of thousands of LGBTI people in this country are feeling. We feel like you, the country, are making the decision of whether I can be happy or not.

Jamie and I may not ever marry. We don't know what the future holds, but at least give us the right to decide.

Jay.

I had the chance to talk to a group of teenagers today. Was a great chat! The question came up about dealing with negativity from others and how I handle it. I guess it's different for each person. There are micro managers in so many aspects of our lives. People who like to control everything. EVERYTHING. You know the ones. Bosses, friends, siblings etc etc. no matter who it is, just respond differently to the way you normally respond. One of two things will happen. 1) They will shift their focus off of you OR 2) You will get the confidence to speak up. It worked for me. Il leave this here 🙂🙂
