BirdNerd Eco-tours offers individually personalised Birdwatching, Wildlife and Wildflower tours, for individuals or small groups, anywhere in western Victoria. Whether you are completely new to birding or a professional wildlife Photographer or anywhere in between, BirdNerd Eco-tours can tailor an itinerary that suits you! Let BirdNerd Eco-tours do all the planning for you so all you need to do is

enjoy the ride and revel in the natural beauty of the landscape and it’s flora and fauna. Make your next trip extraordinary with the help of expert birdwatcher and sharp-eyed naturalist Huib Ottow, owner and operator of BirdNerd Eco-tours. However you want it to, really. We work with you to understand your interests and experience level and get a feel for what your would like to see and do, and then we tailor an itinerary that works within your time-frame and budget to meet you at your home, accommodation or at whatever location suits you, take you on a journey in our fully appointed four-wheel drive vehicle through the habitats you want to visit, to search for the species you want to see, at a pace that suits you and finish by dropping you off back where we started or wherever you’d like to end up. Morning and/or afternoon tea, hot drinks and snacks provided, BYO lunch & cold drinks. Easy as that! How many people per tour? There is no minimum number. We charge per tour, not per head, so if you’re travelling alone or would like the VIP treatment of a personal tour, we are happy to oblige you. Our vehicle can accommodate up to four adult passengers, three if you enjoy a little extra personal space. For insurance reasons, we are unable to offer tag-along tours at present, but we are working hard to be able to offer that option in the near future.

Thank you to all our clients and supporters over the last few years.
After giving it considerable thought, I have decided to put BirdNerd Ecotours on indefinite hiatus as of the beginning of this financial year.
I have other income streams that are the focus of my time and attention and do not presently have the bandwidth to also continue to deliver tours.
I am sure Birdnerd Ecotours will be back some day when I again have the time to dedicate to it.
This page will go offline in a few days time, but my photos will still be available for purchase on my RedBubble page and I may still add more images to the collection from time to time.

Clients of BirdNerd Ecological Services will be unnafected by this change.

Have you been enjoying the photo's I've been posting?
Do you wish you could get prints of your favourite ones to beautify your home, personalise your accessories or wear on your body?
Well now you can!
Over the last few weeks I have been working on setting up a Redbubble store where you can purchase many of my best photos (some previously unpublished) printed on canvasses, throw pillows, journals, notebooks, mouse pads, phone cases... even mini skirts! Plus so many more products, I couldn't possibly list them all here.
To browse the store, simply click on the "Shop on Website" button at the top of this page or follow this link: https://www.redbubble.com/people/BirdNerdPhotos
Remember to check back regularly, because I'll be adding new images all the time!
Requests for specific images or products are more than welcome.

From The Archives, Episode 4.
It's a miserable wet and gloomy day here in the southern Wimmera, so what better way to pass the time than to dip back into the seemingly endless backlog of images taken on various birding trips and outings over the last several years that I still need to sort, and to share some of the highlights with you all.
Enjoy!

From The Archives, Episode 1.
Slowly working through my backlog of literally thousands of images from various birding trips over the years that still need sorting. Here's a more-or-less random sampling of some of the better ones I came across today.

What could be better that finding one endangered butterfly species?
Finding TWO!
I'm back from another trip to the southern Victorian Mallee volunteering my time for Mallefowl mound monitoring and searching for Eltham Copper Butterfly.
Tuesday was an especially exciting day. After spending the morning walking many kilometers through the scrub to check several mounds in the north-west section of the park, then searching for and sucessfully locating Eltham Copper Butterfly at yet another reserve where it had gone previously unrecorded, a chance meeting with a team from Zoos Victoria surveying for the critically endangered Golden-rayed Blue Butterfly led to a population of the latter species being identified and recorded on my hosts property! The mallee is full of surprises.

Spent a fantastic couple of days doing endangered species monitoring in the southern mallee earlier this week, searching for Eltham Copper Butterfly one day and assisting with Mallefowl mound monitoring the next.
Enormously exciting to find a previously unrecorded population of Eltham Copper Butterfly near Gerang Gerung!
Not to be outdone, finding 4 active Mallefowl nest mounds out of 12 surveyed for the day was a great result also.
My sincerest thanks to Mirinda Thorpe and Iestyn Hosking for the opportunity to get involved, as well as the pleasure of their company and their gracious hospitality.

Perhaps not the most spectacular of photos, but enormously exciting for what it represents. This mating pair of endangered Eltham Copper Butterflies were two of several individuals seen yesterday on a field trip to Kiata organised by Hindmarsh Landcare Network Inc and Wetland Revival Trust. My sincerest gratitude to the organisers for the opportunity to encounter this special little gem in the wild and I'm looking forward to getting involved in future work to help search for and preserve this remarkable species.
To all those reading this who live in the Wimmera region and are interested in getting involved in helping to save an endangered species, definitely get in touch with the organisers linked above. Community support is vital for the success of these projects.
